dodie: Tiny Desk Concert

On many levels, this breathtaking Tiny Desk from dodie felt like the ultimate cathartic release. The English singer and her band arrived after more than a year and a half of planning and COVID-related delays; and, this was the final performance we had behind the desk in 2022, capping our long-awaited return to the building after more than two years of pandemic disruption. A lot of us who were lucky enough to see it in person were pretty teary-eyed by the end.
But it was also a release because the music and the way dodie and her band pulled it off were both so magical. Bassist Jillian McKenna is a dodie fan from Canada who joined the band just for this performance after answering a callout on Instagram. The three backup singers are friends who flew in from Los Angeles; the string section was a mix of dodie’s touring band and DC-based artists and fans of Orla Gartland can see her move from piano to guitar and floor tom during the set. dodie herself, who played everything from piano and clarinet to ukulele, and the rest of the band flew in from England solely for the Tiny Desk, arriving on Saturday and flying back Monday not long after playing.
Together, they filled the NPR Music office with songs that radiated with love and life, perfectly recreating the playful, kaleidoscopic spirit of dodie’s 2021 debut album Build a Problem and last year’s Hot Mess EP. Strikingly melodic, whimsical and wistful, dodie’s deep reflections on trauma, letting go and moving on were the perfect close to a year when it felt like we could finally exhale and come together again in song.

Best day of my life lol
Miss u all at NPR!!! I am so so grateful to have played a Tiny Desk!!! Thank you for having me!! 🖤
Wonderful! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
So happy for you. What a pleasant surprise to see you on tiny desk.
so happy for you dodie, well deserved!!!🖤
Beautiful voice for a beautiful artist. NPR introduces me to yet another one to watch.
Amazing! so beautiful :)
going from watching dodie in her bedroom at her parents house to this... wow
😭😭😭😭
LITERALLY AHHHHH
it’s so magical to have followed an artist for so long that it feels like you grew up with them. i’m pretty young so dodie is the only artist i’ve followed for a long time and it’s so cool to watch how her music has developed alongside me and managed to continuously capture my emotions and experiences even as ive matured. her music is just so so special to me :)) (coming up on 7?? years of listening to her music now, so wild 💙)
Same I’m crying ❤
Same 😭😭❤️
I’m so glad she finally got a tiny desk. The fact that this is someone’s first exposure to her somewhere makes me so happy. To hear her songs for the first time again would be magical.
It's my first time hearing her and I'm happy for me too 😁
Me too. What a fantastic intro it’s going to be for so many.
Found her on UA-cam in 2015, so good to see her fan base ever expanding
Yes. I saw a few people in the comments saying this was their first time hearing her and that's makes me soo happy.
Yeah, happened to me! i rly like it and i have to say its one of my favorite tiny desk concerts due to the variety of instruments which arent as common in music nowadays. U can see how much thought and effort went into this tiny desk concert!!
I feel like Dodie (with the help of her crew) is a really great composer, it's always surprising how she manages to keep the "I made this in my bedroom at 2:00 a.m." vibe, but when seeing it live, there's so many people involved in making that sound. It's something I haven't seen in a lot of other places!
honestly I bet she could compose an instrumental piece, like a string quartet piece. All she’d have to do is change is that instead of singing melody, an instrument would play it
@@macyskaggs3772she actually has an short instrumental song on her ep!
shes got 2 instrumental interludes on her album Build A Problem! they are heavenlyy @@macyskaggs3772
Absolutely
that's because everyone is playing very minimalistic! nobody wants to be the "main star". my band is like that too and it's honestly the most pleasant group of people i've ever had the honour to play with. lots of talented people, zero ego.
Quick shout out to the incredible backing singers performing with dodie ! Their voices blend so beautifully
exactly what i thought !
yes yes yes yes yes
sooooooo beautiful
they're so awesomeeee
Orla gartland has her own music and an incredible voice
seeing dodie and orla play some music together is just such a beautiful thing
It really is!
I was shocked to see Orla on the keys
Hehe just u wait for fizz
Her voice has gotten so much clearer and stronger. She's singing with so much ease. I'm so proud of you Dodie
what do you mean? How did she use to sing before?
@@theasmrguy6399 She just feels more confident in my opinion :)
YESS i noticed this and it makes me feel so empowered listening to her growth
her music hits harder than ever
No one gonna talk about the crazy tonal and rhythmical consistency of the clapper in the second song? Seriously mesmerizing.
she’s called orla gartland and has some incredible music!! if you enjoy funky rhythms the first song on her album is called things that i’ve learned and it’s written in 5/4 :’))
gotta love special girl :’)
that's orla for you! her musicality is insane :)
I absolutely adore how every single person in front of that camera so visibly loves what they do. Their smiles, their moves, them being in the moment and feeling the music with everything they've got. Thanks dodie for assembling such a joyful bunch of geniuses.
Tiny desk: "and remember, the concept is minimalism!"
Dodie: "sure sure gotcha" *brings the whole orchestra*
Loved it anyway! I'm a huge fan and it was great to see everyone up there :)))
And its kinda funny cause dodie is usually pretty minimalist
😀
Seeing this in context of the new Justin Timberlake Tiny Desk 😅
can we talk about orla holding down those claps on special girl???
Tiny Desk, you got me again. I watched out of curiosity, never having heard of the Dodie. If I am being honest, I clicked with a bit of 50-something cynicism. The lyrics, orchestration, talent and passion of the entire band drew me in immediately. They were incredibly well-rehearsed and crisp. Dodie’s lyrics were real, raw, expressive and vivid in how she paints a story. I am now a fan of Dodie, who knew? Thank you Tiny Desk for bringing this talented artist and her equally talented band to us.
This makes me really happy. I wish you all the best times with dodie’s music!
One of us! One of us!
My now-husband introduced me to Dodie pretty early into our now 8 year relationship, and it's been incredible to watch her grow and evolve and just be so in awe of her musical ability, her willingness to take risks with her chord progressions and harmonies, and to relate more than I'd like to admit to so many of her songs. If any artist ever deserved a tiny desk, she's definitely one of them, and I feel so glad we finally got to see it happen!
PS, the audio engineer for this was absolutely incredible!
Still waiting for me to find a girl where I introduce Dodie to while sobbing in the car.
Absolutely. The sound mix in this was lovely. Every moment sounded divine!
🙏

I'd never heard of Dodie before, but her music has had a profound effect on me. The lyrics and melody have struck a deep emotional chord with me, and I can't help but to think and feel that she understands me and my struggles in a way that no one else has. I'm so glad I came across this video and discovered this incredible musician. Thank you so much for making such powerful and relatable music; it means so much to me.
🖤
Welcome to the cult, bud. Jokes aside tho, dodie´s music has this incredibly personal feel to it, and you expressed that beautifully. The first song of hers I found was "Social dance", it´s a few years old by now but still has a special place in my heart
You should check out Ren too then. He's still doing things in his living room and busking but he's effen genius. They would make an epic collab if they haven't already
@@annahappen7036 Wow! I listened "Hi Ren" and it was an amazing experience, thanks for the recommendation!
Well good news then! Her channel has like 10 years of songs and demos
When must’ve been released when I was 18-19 and I was so so sad and I felt that song in my bones. Now I’m 25 and living a life I never saw as possible for myself but still when I hear When I feel that girl inside me and I still cry for her. Dodies music is so powerful what a beautiful soul this made me so happy today

ive been a fan of Dodie for,,, id wanna say coming up on 8/9 years now? and ever since i knew about the existence of tiny desk concerts ive wanted one from her so badly. shes such a phenomenal performer, i've been lucky enough to see her live multiple times, and even met her once, and she is truly one of the most amazing musicians to exist! every new album/single/ep is better and more amazing than the last, her ability to work with layering instruments and voices is insane and im so so so happy she finally got an opportunity to have a tiny desk concert !!!
Dido 😎. She’s awesome!
she deserves this and tiny desk is perfect for her vibe. I'm just so grateful for getting to watch them grow and bloom over the years 😭
Yes omg - it's so satisfying as a fan to know that I've been listening to her since she was doing short ukulele songs on UA-cam!! This really makes me want to see her live :-)
Same!! I've been wanting a tiny desk concert form her for years, so so proud of her!!! How lucky to get to meet her!
Whoever does the sound on these is god-tier. Always so so good.

I’ve seen her live twice and it was MAGIC, scream cried the entire time. Loved every second
did she have a lisp before?
she was my first concert! magical
the song “When” will forever and always resonate with me. It’s truly such a beautiful work of art. It really encapsulates longing, nostalgia, and romanticizing life for me.
Mind blown that I’ve come from watching dodie singing on her bed with a fairy light background to this….but then equally mind blown it’s taken this long. What a talent 🎉
Same here!! So happy for them!!! ❤
It’s quite a jolt to think of the big leap she’s taken since those early UA-cam days isn’t it? Lots of struggles in between of course!

Dodie's music is always this perfect blend of happiness and melancholy.
Glimmers of sunlight peeking through the clouds on a rainy day.
Very English ;)
This is why I love tiny desk - never heard of Dodie and what a great introduction.
I'm a metalhead really but would happily eat my dinner to this again! Bravo, great sound.
I agree, TinY Desk is the best!! I’ve found so many wonderful artists I never would have come across and the experience is always stellar. I’ve never seen a band not at their best: they are always having so much fun, the artists plays a bit with the music and it feels soulful and unique, literally singing their hearts out for us. amazing every time
i remember years ago listening to dodie for the first time, and man has she come far ^v^ there’s lots of music coming your way ❤️
I found her on UA-cam in 2015. It’s so good to see her fan base ever expanding!
She’s on quite a few really fun creative IRL game videos. I think Tom Scott might have run it? But also some other videos with friends that i recall being very entertaining. I’m blanking out, if anyone can remember the channel or series, plz recommend them! Because that’s where I first found her and then her music. She’s very funny in the casual puzzle/game vids!
As a long time fan of Dodie, it's so good to see people hearing her for the first time ^-^ And this is such a great performance.
“when” will forever be my favourite of dodies songs, i relate to it so much and it makes me cry every time i listen to it. it’s amazing to see how much dodie and her voice have changed over the years but the sentiment still remains
absolutely loved this!!!!!!!!
Def made me tear up in this performance.
1000% same
same!! the original live recording in intertwined was already one of my faves and was incredibly beautiful, but the proper studio recording in the album just absolutely took my breath away
when is so🙏🙏
this Tiny Desk is one for the ages... everything is not only perfect, but the sum of it all became so much more than the already incredibly well performed parts. This has become one of my favorite Tiny Desks.
can't forget to mention the sound.... OH, the sound of this! it's a dream to see people so dedicated to the craft of recording that matches and enhances the art. just lovely.
The mix is SO. GOOD!
The look between Ross and Katt at 13:41 melted my heart. It symbolizes all the sweetness and the tenderness in this band and in this music. Thank you dodie, and thanks to all the wonderful musicians playing and singing with you. I love them all.
It's also super cute how all of them were smiling and singing during Lonely Bones, even the strings and drummers (nowhere near any mic), truly a song sung with loads of people.
Who’s the fiddler in black?!
@@surfingruinedmylifeat 11:08 dodie introduces the entire band, and you have it in the description of the video, so maybe you're talking about Elena Abad (left) or Nataly Merezhuk (right)?

I envy you for being able to discover dodie for the first time! Aaahhh her music is wonderful!
I’m so happy for you. Dodie was the best thing that happened to me and I’m so glad I had her with me growing up
she has a ton more songs on youtube than on spotify!
"Honest" is something that really describes her and it's my favourite thing about her work. I am not usually a fan of indie-flavoured music because I can feel the affectation, but with Dodie I can feel the emotion instead
You’re in for a treat 🔥
One of the best parts about dodie's Tiny Desk is watching Orla make all the faces
I *adore* watching Orla perform in the background
every single arrangement is so intentional and immaculate. truly in awe.

Thank you!!!
Tiny desk often bring out the best of artists but this is truly something exceptional. Any chance of releasing this set as an EP? Vinyl???
Dodie’s progression has been INSANE this was beyond phenomenal. I have no words, only full body chills
Orla's clapping was my favorite thing from this performance.
I had never heard of Dodie before this. I'm shook to the bones with gratitude to have been led to this artist. I have this on repeat, every day listening to the magic - beautiful and bittersweet.Thank you Tiny Desk. And thank you Dodie and company. This parcel of art is for the ages.
I've always loved Dodie's ability to reimagine her music. This is a tremendously gorgeous treat!
She is very talented

I know that these concerts are meant to be short... But man, I need this to be at least an hour long!
When they all sang together at the end I teared up. Never have I been so moved by camaraderie, so joyful and pure. That's all an artist could ever ask for, I think

I actually gasped! How cool that she's on here. The funny thing is I think of her songs as being quite sparse and bare in their sound, yet clearly it takes 10 people to perform them in full!

Hello, I'm 52. I didn't know dodie, now I like dodie. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
After a million listens of When, I still cried at this one. I love you so much dodie, congratulations for being on NPR, that's impressive!
oh wow im so happy to see this!! dodie was everything to me when i was younger but for some reason i lost track of her. the only song i know here is "when." so beautiful to hear that song again as a 22 year old, knowing this was my depression/dissociation anthem as a 15 year old. and like dodie, i still relate a little and always will.
it wasn't just her music that brought me comfort at that age. the internet was different back then, and she was the first person i found who was so open about her mental health and she always put everything i felt into words so well. i even bought her book "secrets for the mad." it was like having an older sister.
anyways really happy to rediscover her here and sooo excited to binge all her new music and videos that i've been missing out on! love you dodie 💗
Wow this comment hit so very close to home! I am also 22 and found Dodie when I was a severely depressed and lonely tween. She made me feel seen in a time where those struggles we were facing wasn’t the norm to talk about. I also preordered her book and read it like it was my own personal survival guide. I couldn’t have said it better, you got it exactly right, it felt like having a lovely, kind, gentle, loving older sister there to guide you, cry with you, relate to you and hold your hand through it all
Wow! Just wow. Every one in this band is so perceptive of each other and still they all shine through individually. What a great performance!!❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Also such great songwriting by Dodie... but we all know that :)
This is the best session i’ve seen in a while, everyone loving what they’re doing, makes me feel like live deserves to be lived
