  • BRITISH DANCE BANDS OF 1929 -- A Half Dozen
    JACK HYLTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA
    Thinking of You -- v. Sam Browne
    Recorded on 7th February 1929
    RAY STARITA AND HIS AMBASSADORS BAND
    The Wedding Of The Painted Doll --v. Betty Bolton
    Recorded on 4th May 1929
    JACK PADBURY'S COSMO CLUB SIX
    Praying for Rain
    Recorded on 31st May 1929
    TOMMY KINSMAN'S FLORIDA CLUB DANCE BAND
    I'm Saving All My Lovin' --v. Eddie Pola
    Recorded c. July 1929
    HARRY BIDGOOD'S BROADCASTERS
    Lovable and Sweet --v. Tom Barratt
    Recorded on 12th November 1929
    THE FOUR BRIGHT SPARKS
    Melody Divine
    Recorded on 4th December 1929
    All recordings remastered by this user from the original 78 rpm records. This selection tends to be on the hot side but finishes with a beautifully played waltz by four top musicians directed by Van Phillips. Ray Starita's version of "The Wedding of the Painted Doll" was apparently short-lived in the Columbia catalogue and a version by Debroy Somers was substituted and released using the same catalogue number.

    1929 was a great year of great songs.that was when the talkies were in full swing and musicals were at their height and every picture had a theme song.i had so many 78s and song sheets from that year.sadly,i no longer have them.

    O what fantastic music, I love the 40s music, it make's me think of my wonderful mother who lived during these fab years, I can just remember the old wooden round shouldered radio we once had in Milford rd, Duffield, near Derby. Love to relive those years again, when my Mother and Father were young. My Dad had an old Austin Riley then, and he worked for the Derby Trent bus company, they were real buses then with starting handles at the front. you had to wind them round with both hands. ;-)

    I love this video. The selection of songs is terrific. I think my favorite is Hylton. His arrangements are sublime. The music of 1929 is so upbeat. The Roaring 20s were in full strength and people had no idea of the Depression that was about smack them in the face in the next few years.

      ...and how little they would want upbeat happy music to help them thru that time. The British weren't above snappy tempos, but they affected Americans like a bad hangover, so our pop sound was often bland until the swing era came along.

      There were exceptions, one favorite was George Olsen AHO The Girl on the little green hat, and Pink Elephants, both 1932 and there were others like Lazy Day etc

    THANK YOU SO MUCH. When I was a baby living in London, my mom's favorite band was Jack Hylton. She used to play her 78s for me all day long so I came to love the bands.

    Hi Panachord,
    Lovely selection. I particularly liked 'Lovable and Sweet'. Never knew the Bidgood band could swing so hard. I love those little 8" discs and in particular the Edison Bell Radio ones. They are beautifully recorded and almost always have other arrangements than the published ones.

    I can't get over the price of Columbia Records in 1929.
    3/- was a lot of money at that time, even for premium records like HMV & Columbia. That would be somewhere in the region of "£6" at todays prices

    Nice batch of transfers! Maybe it's an idea to make a separate atch of 8 and 9 inch records (Broadcast, Edison-Bell Radio, metropole etc) if you have them in your collection... Greetings from the Netherlands, Rolf

    Peter, listening again to this wonderful selection, Betty Bolton has big problems keeping in tune. I had that record too and thought it was some pressing mistake, but your copy has the exact same problem. She is often more than a semitone flat. By the way I always come back to your year-by-year selections. They give such a superb overview of the 'hits' of that year. Your restorations are always superb of course, nearly always way better than any commercial re-issue.

    • @Panachord
      @Panachord  9 років тому +2

      Peter Hendriksma This was one of my first uploads when I was just learning how to do this. I'm pleased it is worth revisiting.

    • @syncopeter
      @syncopeter 9 років тому +1

      Peter, everything you've uploaded is worth revisiting more than once. In several cases I've played them 20 times or more. Your music selection is always interesting, the information is concise and to the point and your restorations are first class. It is thanks to you, Jonathan, David and a lot of others that one of the most important periods in amusement music is still available. Out-and-out jazz can still be found on CD, but dance band music has become virtually unavailable. I've been suffering from sleepless periods for over 35 years, and when, like now, I have such a moment, I always revert to your uploads. 15 and more minutes of superb music is totally relaxing. I love uploads of super rare single sides but just sitting back and enjoying the equivalent of an LP side tops it all. Thank you very much for the enormous effort you put in making this available to us. Really much appreciated.

    • @Panachord
      @Panachord  9 років тому +2

      Peter Hendriksma It would be very sad indeed if this wonderful legacy of recorded music was to be forgotten. It is encouraging to see young collectors and enthusiasts out there enjoying those great bands of the past, and the internet has given us all the chance to make the recordings available again.

    All of a sudden I'm scrolling on British bands from the late 1920s.
    They are similar to, yet quite different from ('different to' is English humor, I think, but better than the awful American 'different than', which is ungrammatical and used commonly now) American dance bands of the period. I hope they keep showing up. Hope you guys get your grammar figured out.
