Shure MVX2U Interface Review / Demo / Explained

  • Today I walkthrough, explain, test and review the new Shure MVX2u. This is the smallest interface I've reviewed and it offers +60dB of gain as well as Digital Signal Processing such as EQ, Compression, and Limiting. The preamp is on the noisier side of things and as of early-September 2023 there is an issue with low frequency sounds increasing the noise floor of the device.

      @WyattOShea 10 місяців тому +3

      It's still not even that bad imo at all. Yeah it's not going to be good enough for actual pro voice over but for discord or doing in the field recordings where background noise is more of a concern it's probably more or less fine.

    • @goodenoughgear
      @goodenoughgear 10 місяців тому +2

      I always use some type of noise reduction in all my work so I never heard the noise. I think it is a non-issue if you use any kind of noise reduction. I wouldn't recommend anything like this for pro voice over work. Even then, it would do in a pinch for that. For remote podcasts and such, no problem in my experience.

    Thanks for your thorough reviews and especially for testing if the settings live on the device! I plan to use this as a clutter free configuration for my remote work setup and have been watching all your videos for that reason. I imagine more folks require remote work setups than podcasting ones. I think it’s relevant because much of the settings are overridden by post processing in MS Teams or Workplace or other software.

    It is very small and doesn't seem to suck... but that noise floor is pretty high and probably won't be fixed with firmware, but that odd lowend glitch could probably solved.
    I don't see people using an SM7b with these however, probably much more likely that it'd be on a louder dynamic mic or a condenser, which probably means that noise wouldn't be as much of an issue. I would have liked to see what the noise floor looked like in that scenario, and what it'd look like with a fet booster or cloud lifter inbetween.
    I do, however, really, reallllly love that the settings live *on* the device. That's absolutely the right direction for most people who'd buy this who 'just want to plug XLR into computer' which, given how many videos/google hits/Quora questions there are to that effect, it seems like a good fit for those people... and everyone else should just buy a scarlet.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  10 місяців тому +4

      I think that's exactly who would love this: people who travel a lot and need a super light setup. Handheld condenser or louder handheld dynamic, this thing, earbuds and then you're rocking and a rolling. Or those who just want to plug it in and get it going without a bunch of audio plugins and daws getting in the way. Open shares software, set it up once, and you're good to go for your ocnference calls.

    I have recently tested about a dozen XLR to USB adapters and my favorites were the Shure X2u and the BLUE Icicle. One of the big problems I had with the X2u was it's size and weight - it is a chunky fellow. It also colored the sound a bit, but that is subjective. Well made, but too hefty. Right when I was testing it, I heard the MVX2u was soon to be released. Looks like they have made some great progress in the right direction! From a build and software perspective, I really have not seen anything that compares to the Shure adapters. Once BLUE was bought out, they quit making the Icicle which is a shame, but frankly, the build quality on the Icicle left much room for improvement. Shure has made some encouraging progress here - there is a market for these devices.

  • @Dr-Lex
    @Dr-Lex 10 місяців тому +4

    Great review as always! I think the MVX2U is very impressive for such a small 'in-line' interface that is just a few steps shy of being really great. As you mentioned, a mute switch or toggle would have been much appreciated on it. It seems like something intended for a "Shure Starter Package" bundled with the SM58 and relevant cables to get folks set up with a dynamic XLR mic since the software also seems geared towards simple button click UI. However, I would have a hard time pitching this over the similarly priced Elgato Wave XLR which also takes up minimal desk real estate, has gain for days, the anti-clipping feature to deal with overexcitement, and in my experiece has been dynamite.

    Surprisingly capable for being so tiny though isn't it? I learned to do a sort of Quagmire with the original X2U doing a giggity head motion since you need to be really close with the gain not all the way up to avoid the noise but pull back any time you increase the volume of your voice. Really good for portability.

    Hi, this device could be the best sound card for single microphone if they fix the issues reported on this video plus if they add support to smartphone app Motive because like this is not really portable. Moreover a better self-noise is necessary and a capacitive mute button too. After that it will be wonderful. I think that a Fethead could fix the self-noise and it shoud be anyway a solution to continue some type of portability feature. 🤔

If someone has a dedicated portable tracking rig, some of these software effects would work wonders on DI signal shaping, for people running preamps or multi-FX units with cabinet IR's already on them, or for peope using software amp sims or recording DI's for later reamping through another interface. Mic preamps has specification called Equivalent Input Noise. Fethead has EIN = -129dbu, which is good (-131 is a theoretical limit). If manufacturer doesn't add this spec to the specsheet it's always suspicious. That means that spec is not really impressive.

    I'm planning to use this MVX2U in the field for the tiny size and ability to convert from XLR to unbalanced line with phantom power from a USB-C power source. If I use just the headphone port for audio, it does not go through digital signal processing right? The DSP is just for USB-C to computer analog-to-digital conversion correct? So the XLR signal to headphone monitor port would preserve the original untouched signal? Or modified with any artifacts?

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  7 місяців тому +1

      Headphone port includes the processing.It is not a direct analog pass through from the mic to the headphones because it does capture the processing if it's engaged so it's running through some computer chip in the signal path to add that in.

    I'd be curious if this thing would fit into something in or completely replace a Fethead for something like a RE-20 or SM7b. It'd cut down the clutter on a desk, over using a traditional interface like the Focusrite. The noise issue does scare me off a bit.

    • @blackraen

      I've got a couple of Shure's earlier take on this portable-interface design, the X2U. They are fantastic for mobile setups where you're going to be recording in the field, interviews, stuff like that, but the X2U has this same kind of noisier pre-amp and I wouldn't recommend it for studio/desk-based work. The big sell on these is the portability, but you'll spend more time in post-processing as the trade off.
      I think that for live-streaming, VoIP communications, or other live codec-compressed audio they are fine, since the noise isn't bad enough to affect audio quality much when run through those kinds of digital codecs. It's only an issue when you're trying to do mastering-type work.

    • @citizenstrife

    Not for nothing, but the highpass filter is usually a good idea to keep on when doing just spoken word kind of stuff to help mitigate rumble and noise that is well below most peoples spoken vocal range. That being said... the unit is still messed up lol. That noise print you;re getting from moving it is weird to say the least. Would be interesting to see if you pumped something with really low subs through it if that noise would present itself, or is the noise a result of the physical jarring of the unit. Great review.

      My theory with the 1 and 2 ins is always about who I can send it to so they can record and send me something back and how are they going to be able to utilize it. So like they can scratch some vocals with it, but can they also plug their instrument into it and get a decent signal? I still have tons of buds who struggle to use computers and digitally record without their hand being held so having a nice little device that can be easily mailed or handed off and used for a variety of inputs is ideal. Would like to hear if that thing produce a good signal or if trying to adapt it for instruments and lines is going to produce a ton of noise and make it unusable for anything but ideas....

      Yes. I AM a guitarist first, but this is a mic input which is why I didn't think to try it. I didn't consider getting a 1/4" to male XLR cable to connect a guitar to this. Also, this device doesn't have a HI-Z mode so there would be an impedance mismatch. If you want to hear how that impedance mismatch impacts sound here's a sample of that on the Hewitt connect 6: ua-cam.com/video/JtSTbinmx1I/v-deo.htmlsi=Ewxng_6Z7RPYvU-5&t=644
