      +Jessica Sebastião understandable, but I think it's just confusing because the whole purpose of the video is to give definitive pronunciations on hard-to-pronounce names. But how are we to know which way to say them if we're given conflicting pronunciations? I just think it was lazy on the part of the creators. They should have made sure the models' pronuncations were uniform and accurate.

      +Jessica G. Exactly. Well almost. I would make 1 change tho: Since in Italian the "e" is always pronounced as "ay", I would say it's more like broo-skayt-tah. (And Italians ALWAYS pronounce both of the letters in a double consonant pairing like "tt". So that rhythmic lilt you hear is them pausing after the first t to differentiate it from the sound of the next t ;-)

    For everyone:
    Nike is always pronounced "nikey" or "nike"(like mike) . After some researches i find out that both "nikey" and "nike" pronunciations are wrong. The correct pronunciation should be "nee-keh", but the founder of the brand changed it into "nikey".
    So since the owner of the brand decided so that is how people should call it (eventho its wrong)

    • @bannyreynolds9547
      @bannyreynolds9547 5 років тому +5

      Yass, the original word 'nike' (nee-keh) comes from the ancient greek nike=goddess of victory or more easily the noun 'victory'. Maybe you already know, but in the greek mythology there's a tale about a soldier who runs for days from the place where the last battle against the persians has been to his city, in order to announce that the greek poleis have won the war. He runs, he never stops and when he finally arrives, he can just scream three times 'nike, nike, nike', 'victory, victory, victory' before dying. Ancient greeks are such drama queens🙄😂

    I feel like people need to understand that just because a name is native to our english language doesn't mean it is universally known as that pronunciation. To think that just because the name 'Alexander McQueen' is easy because we know how to pronounce it and no one else should have a problem with it is very westernized outlook on the world. There was no uproar when they pronounced japanese, italian, or fench brand names because that is not our native language, and we see that as a reason to be pronounced. There are going to be people who don't speak english fluently and see this video to understand how to pronounce Alexander McQueen because to them it is a hard name to pronounce, much like us for a japanese brand.

      doodl3bugg13 Well, yes, I have heard uneducated French speakers say Bruges and pronounce its s but no one would ever say these as z's like your English speaker brain seems to believe, a s is a s not a z. Also it's /brüj/ and /vah-cans/ and these final s are silent because they're plural marks. You don't say un hermè, des hermès, it's Hermès as in a proper noun that you pronounce all the letters of like you will have to pronounce all the letters of the names Inès or Tobias including the s.

      iyawakarehen Ok, no need to be a know-it-all ass. I used "z"s because I was trying to emphasize the use of the "s" sound. Also I just said that you DON'T pronounce all those "s"s and you corrected me as though I had said the opposite....Also, if we really wanna bitch each other out, I can tell you that it's not "...a s is a s not a z...," it's, "...AN s is AN s is a z..." We use the word "an" before vowel sounds in English--- but your "French speaker brain" probably can't comprehend that. Thank you for answering my question, albeit with a fucking attitude. (PS: I know I also have an attitude, but you started it.)

      doodl3bugg13 They pronounced it right, in France we pronounce the "s". But the model pronounce "givenchy" right but the "lips" don't.

      Well the brand is actually called Saint Laurent or Saint Laurent Paris currently, so you don't have to worry about the Yves unless the new(ish) creative director Vaccarello renames the brand back with the Yves (: The YSL logo is only used for cosmetics and handbags + currently and it's said just as is, "Y S L."

    Is there somewhere I can buy the music in the background? Does the "song" have a name? I saw the music was only credited as "Tristan Bechet at Cadence NY."
    As a side note, this video is awesome. Really well done. I've watched it five times, and I was only here for one of the designers, lol.

    To those who are confused: Linsey Wixson, who is narrating the video (She also appears at 2:39) has a slightly differently pronunciation for some designers because she uses the native French sounds. For example, Pierre Balmain was French, and he pronounced his name "Ball-mah", but in America, we say "Ball-main." While some of the other models do have slight accents from their homelands, they, for the most part, seem to be choosing the American/British pronunciations.
