So the people who sell bright blue and red pearls INSIDE an oyster, are selling dyed pearls? How do they put the pearl back in a closed shell? Do they glue the shells back together again? This is fascinating. Thanks for the information.

You probably forgot you ever asked this but since I stumbled upon it and others might be able to see it, just know whenever you see videos with colorful pearls like you described or things like those souvenir shop oysters you open yourself, not only are you correct that they're dyed (even "natural" colors) but the bulk of the pearl is probably plastic and the mollusk is long dead and likely never made the pearl at all. For the sake of a good presentation, they kill one oyster for its pearl, shove it in another dead one (which kills it), and glue it shut for "opening" later. Kinda rude imo but the affordable pearl business isn't known for being super classy in how they treat their livestock and customers.
Unless you're dishing out some decent cash, it's likely the pearls are nucleated with plastic (meaning if you cut the pearl in half, it's a plastic bead with a few layers of pearl around it). They dupe a lot of people into overpaying for this since not a ton of people think about cutting them in half to check.
That being said, not all pearl farming is that bad. If you're ever interested in getting 100% natural pearls, they tend to not be perfectly round (since the natural irritant it formed around wasn't perfectly round either) and they are usually smaller. It's why "real" pearls that are big and round are a VERY big deal, and probably in the tiara of European royalty or some fancy auction rather than a jewelry store.
Nucleated pearls also aren't always bad quality, though. Freshwater pearls can be nucleated with really tiny nonplastic beads and make nice big round pearls that are 90%+ solid nacre (pearl). Those will be cheaper, but still not souvenir shop cheap. Saltwater pearls have more variety in natural color since there are more species, but the process of farming them for pearls is a lot harder (read: expensive) and most of them die from the process before ever making a pearl, while freshwater mollusks fair a lot better and the process is less harmful to them.
If you want to make sure you don't get duped into paying for plastic or unnecessary animal torture, ask questions like "were these pearls nucleated and if so, are they nucleated using plastic" "where are they sourced from" and "what percentage of this nacre (pronounced "nay-ker" in English)?". If they can't answer you or their website doesn't say, the answer probably isn't good. If they're sourced from China (most are) the answer also probably isn't super good. If you find yourself on those videos where someone is opening a mollusk full of rainbow pearls, do the oyster a solid and leave a comment informing people that the person is really out here killing oysters just so they can shove fake pearls in it and pretend to open it like an absolute loser.
      Hope that helps.
