The sphero BB-8 look stronger, more durable, and is more interactive than the Hasbro BB-8. But i wish sphero BB-8 would be as big as the Hasbro BB-8, but it's small size makes it look cuter at least.
I just got the sphero bb8, it's so much fun, it runs great, the sounds are wonderful, it has tons of options to play with on the app, and one thing I haven't seen yet in sphero vids is that if you own the force awakens he will watch it with you and interact with the movie, my fiancé and I did it earlier and it was the coolest thing, sphero wins by leaps and bounds
As an owner of a regular Sphero, I'll say that I was (and you'd likely be) surprised at the licking one of those little guys can take. They can roll off your average table at speed and continue rockin' right along.
Very accurate and fair comparison. You are not attacking any of the brands, in any case you are pointing out the pros and cons of each robot in a very objective way. One of them is suitable for kids and the other one for grown up collectors. Very well put. Great video I had fun watching it.
Regarding durability, while Sphero BB-8 just came out it is nearly identical to Sphero's 2.0 robotic ball. There are videos on UA-cam showing it getting shot by a shot gun multiple times and going down wood stairs and it seems to be still working.
Wow, definitely getting a lot of old Star Wars videos these days. I guess the YT algorithm got triggered because I had been watching some Disney Droid Depot videos? 😛 That said, I'd love to see an updated version of this video where a comparison could be made between the Sphero BB-8, the Hasbro BB-8, the Droid Depot BB-8, and whatever other remote controlled BB-8 has come out inbetween 2015-2021. 😁
Vincent Dufault Simple. I could add LEDs to it and wire it to flash when the sphere makes noise. I can replace the magnets with stronger ones. I could connect the remote to a microcontroller.
Some additional notes: When driving, the "head turning" control is to point the blue LED inside the body toward you to establish the correct direction for the left side control. Once you do this, up is away from you, down is toward you, left is left, and right is right. This eliminates any confusion. There is also a turbo boost function where you hold down the on screen button in the lower right. Good review!
+gansan00 Thanks for the input. I had not learned everything yet as I was trying to get the video out fast, so I appreciate the tips for my viewers. Thanks for watching.
The little one is definitely better. I think it justifies the much higher price. It's less of a toy and more of an experience, with all the app functionalities and stuff.
Good comparison. The message is an augmented reality feature. And being able to "talk" to the sphero one is fun too once you get the hang of it (phone arm's length away). I don't like the target one as much but good assessment about it being good for kids. Simpler to use, more durable.
Thats so cool. I remember when the first trailer came out, a lot of people got worried because they swore BB-8 was CGI. Quite an impressive little droid they build for the movie.
The Hasbro one, as cheap as you might think it looks, is a lot more durable when it comes to being used by children. The Sphero one is more suitable for teens and adults since it's less likely that they'll accidentally drop it on hard surfaces and the like. High tech stuff works better but it's a lot less resistant to hits and drops.
Timmy's Toy Box Yeah, Sphero is very durable, but I still think that when it comes to children playing with this, the Hasbro one is a bit better (since the iPhone is also at risk of being dropped by them, haha!). Cool video!
Just got my Sphero BB-8. I know that some people are disappointed with it, but I LOVE it! It's solid, and the only thing I wish it could do is really project a hologram.
My son is 5 and loves BB-8 and I'm going to get him one of these for his upcoming bday. I like the Sphero version a lot for the features, but the size of the Hasbro version is great.
I'm glad to say I figured out how the head-on-body (with magnets) mechanism works without having seen or heard any explanation. Clever am I. May the Force be with you.
Digvijay T True. The Sphero has better range, more interaction and can do much more! It even interacts while you are watching the force awakens! Cool huh! Also, yes the hasbro is pretty much a big RC car.
I reccomend the sphero. It has more things to do, it's cleaner, least likely to break and it has it's own personality. The remote control one can break there's barely any things to do, smooth movement though.
Sphero by a long shot.... not even close..... Hasbro looks like every other RC cheap toy (because it is).... The Sphero BB8 is basically a working rendition of the Star Wars's prototype. Obviously, they're going for two completely different audiences... Kids vs Fans
Yeah, Sphero one is definitely for collectors and more mature responsible fans, Hasbro one is for little kids to throw around house XD Nice comparison =)
This is just what I needed to decide which one to get. I feel the Target one is too loud (while it rolls), wobbles a little too much while still, and too big. I like the small size of Sphero's version, since you can easily hold it in one hand. The Target one is better for younger Star Wars enthusiasts, but older (teens and adults) would probably like Sphero's better, in my opinion.
+Kens H what's not brought up is that the sphero can be and will be upgraded from now and the release of the movie... as Disney is trying to keep BB-8 specs somewhat hidden till the movie many new features are going to be added and sounds where the Hasbro one is just stuck where it is a release.. :) did you know that you can take BB-8 swimming with you, make him do jumps and tricks all is needed is to take off his head and hes water proof and can doo cool stuff In the water . hell you can even buy a rubber cover with nibs so you can take bb-8 outdoors and go off-roading with him again head has to come off but the pay value in this guy never stops ...:) just google up sphearo sphere 2.0 and what this can do BB-8 can do better :)
This was a great review. It's exactly what I needed to know. The review and price point were excellent. In fact, I will buy both. The larger as a toy for the kids and the smaller for myself.
Hi BB-8 fans! I have a new vid up showing a demo of the Force Band from Sphero coming this fall that will allow you to control BB-8 with hand movements. Exclusive video from Toy Fair 2016 New York! Check out my channel page to see it.
On the sphero, there is no control to move the head, that control is to line up a light inside BB8 to your location so you can control it however you want with just one finger, plus there's other commands you can give him while driving, like making him say yes or no, or evade etc. I've tried both, sphero is by far the better product.
Ya its really lame tho. There's a single wheel on the bottom so it doesn't roll and isn't controllable. You push its head and it beeps and randomly rolls places.
Thank you for the comparison! I didn't even know there was a Hasbro version until I stumbled across this video. I chose wisely; the sphero BB-8 is the clear winner!
The control to your right on the app is to originate the droid. You simply rotate the head so the blue dot is pointed towards you! That allows you to have amazing control with the directional circle on the left.
+Matt Reams Yes, I learned that after making the video, which is why I put a note in there to give an update to my viewers. Never had a Sphero before. Thanks for watching.
Clearly, these two are intended for two market types. Adults/Collectors (sphero) and Children Hasbro). Did you mention the cost difference between the two?
Just sayin, I purchased the sphero from amazon and im super excited to play with it! This little guy can go and do everything u want him to! The hasbro might be a good prouduct to but for 80 bucks, it is overpriced. Sphero is extremely durable as well. Great for the kids and adult collectors! Love my little bb8!
I got sphero, and he is amazing! I love the controls and how relistic, fast, and cute he is. Only wish is that the sounds came out of the robot, instead of the app. Patrol mode is also AWESOME
I want this soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much cuz then if my mom ever tells me to get my brother i can just use my bb-8
I have both of these. The Hasbro version is much bigger but just can't compete with the Sphero. It's like comparing a 40.00 Tracphone special to the newest iPhone. The head on the Hasbro version likes to fall off, it's slow (might be better for a kid though), it wobbles like it's drunk while in motion and the remote is IR so it has to be pointed directly at it for the BB8 to respond to commands. Spend the extra money and go for the Sphero. It will eventually make up for the extra cost in not having to buy batteries lol (almost lol). The Sphero is rechargeable via wireless induction charging through its awesome little desktop cradle. For a smaller kid the Hasbro is probably the better option (since it's cheaper, moves slower and doesn't require a smartphone to control). For an older kid or an adult collector go for the Sphero BB8 hands down.
The strength of the Sphero model is the awesome apps that work with it. It's fun lasts longer because once you're bored with simply driving it, you can download apps to get it to perform macros or even write code for it. And, as Sphero is keen to point out, this can be educational (yet fun) for children and young adults interested in learning to write code.
I'm getting the Hasbro one when it comes out in UK because its bigger, does what I want it for and is cheap enough to get before the force awakens haha
The sphero BB-8 look stronger, more durable, and is more interactive than the Hasbro BB-8. But i wish sphero BB-8 would be as big as the Hasbro BB-8, but it's small size makes it look cuter at least.
True it could be portable probably and instead of carrying that huge hasbro bb-8
BB-8 is cute no matter what!
Also it is water-proof like the sphero and the sphero 2.0 and it is buoyant which means it can float on water.
Actually for me smaller things are easier to control but pls. don't blame me.
+Lego AndMoreLego Tottaly!
There’s a knockoff called planet boy, it’s basically sphero bb-8 but if he was really stupid and can’t stop saying play with me
If I had a dollar for every time BB8 was in the title, I'd have 6 dollars.
*5
*3
+Alex42 Gaming the title keeps changing lel
+THEH lol
+THEH *1 BILLION DOLLARS!!!
Hasbro lost
Sphero won
Like if you agree
True
True
Dragokid let's go ye ye ( like if you know what channel that's from)
Dragokid I have a Sphero bb8
Since sphero won,I decided to buy it..it was 130$$,so yea..it was worth it. :D
As an owner of a regular Sphero, I'll say that I was (and you'd likely be) surprised at the licking one of those little guys can take. They can roll off your average table at speed and continue rockin' right along.
Functionality wise, sphero wins hands down. Not even a competition.
Agreed
To me sphero wins for collectors and people that play with toys I always make it Patrol to make it explore.
Sphero doesn't work well on carpets, though
+Cardinal Ximenez Mine does. Works fine.
+Cardinal Ximenez mine does
Very accurate and fair comparison. You are not attacking any of the brands, in any case you are pointing out the pros and cons of each robot in a very objective way. One of them is suitable for kids and the other one for grown up collectors. Very well put. Great video I had fun watching it.
+Eva Rojano THanks! And thanks for watching!
Hasbro is good for a decoration and Sphero is good to play with
+Lord Vader you have it flipped dude
+Lord Vader Thanks for watching.
No problem !
+Big_Potato_dad Insert comment here.
They are still junk toys and way overpriced
Awww the sphero one is so cute!
If only the Sphero was the size of the Hasbro...
+TheVideoInvader ikr
+TheVideoInvader yeah, and spoken by himself, not in the app. ;/
maybe, just maybe, there will be a 2.0 comming out...
It's a baby BB-8
baby-8!
BB8 is so damn cute
+lupinearsenalALT That's why he is already so popular and the movie isn't even out yet. Thanks for watching.
lupinearsenalALT big or small
Regarding durability, while Sphero BB-8 just came out it is nearly identical to Sphero's 2.0 robotic ball. There are videos on UA-cam showing it getting shot by a shot gun multiple times and going down wood stairs and it seems to be still working.
+Jimmy Nguyen Thanks for letting everyone know and thanks for watching.
well, they made a prototype in 48 hours
sphero's BB-8 is more smaller so it could become a millitary drone JK
+Joseph LaManna You can order the sphero one from their website but delivery is not expected until October. If you want it now there are many on ebay.
+Timmy's Toy Box I ordered it 9/4 off the Sphero website and got it today 9/11. If you order it from Ebay, you're just going to pay a fortune.
Luv2BNeko If you ordered the first day, you can get it fast. But now they have an October delivery posted on their website.
+Timmy's Toy Box After watching this video, I'm REALLY glad I paid a little extra for the Sphero one! Thanks!
+Luv2BNeko Yup
+Timmy's Toy Box I saw a ton at brookstone! :)
Thanks Timmy!
On first glance the Hasbro seems to be the clear el'cheapo, and your review sure clarify's that with the comparison.
Cheers
I've been waiting for a comparison video! Thanks!
+AjayCollectibles You're welcome. Thanks for watching.

The Hasbro one seems a lot easier to hack and modify.
You'd be surprised, sphero actually has an entire program for modifying their robots.
+B. Winky LMAO
+KingCobra I think you're the one who doesn't understand the meaning of hack in this situation.
Dafuk? How can you hack something like that? There is nothing to acces it... While Sphero is made to be hacked :3
Vincent Dufault Simple. I could add LEDs to it and wire it to flash when the sphere makes noise. I can replace the magnets with stronger ones. I could connect the remote to a microcontroller.

Timmy's Toy Box Yeah, Sphero is very durable, but I still think that when it comes to children playing with this, the Hasbro one is a bit better (since the iPhone is also at risk of being dropped by them, haha!).
Cool video!
FYI: The rollers on his head attract a ton of lint (Sphero version).
That pool table tho
Just got my Sphero BB-8. I know that some people are disappointed with it, but I LOVE it! It's solid, and the only thing I wish it could do is really project a hologram.
+tracytrebilcox - Thanks for watching.
Let's go team Sphero
Yess
I love that sound of opening a box of a new toy
+PoseidonKross2009 So do I! Thanks for watching.
Guy is unboxing the cutest Star Wars droid but he sounds like he's about to kill himself after a messy divorce
Here's hoping you're not experiencing this kind of cruelty.
My son is 5 and loves BB-8 and I'm going to get him one of these for his upcoming bday. I like the Sphero version a lot for the features, but the size of the Hasbro version is great.
The Hasbro BB-8 is intoxicated right out of the box.
+Gregory Schimmel - Thanks for watching
what is the app
@@air6766 oh my god
I'm glad to say I figured out how the head-on-body (with magnets) mechanism works without having seen or heard any explanation. Clever am I. May the Force be with you.
+SF Videos - thanks for watching.
the sphero Droid looks more alive than the Hasbro one and the Hasbro one looks really cheap
Well, it is marketed towards kids. No one puts great quality into kid's toys anymore
Coitus Ergo Sum - which is disappointing because kids could have better looking stuff and actually know what quality looks like ;-;
Awesome comparison video! Love the robots!!! I know what I want for Christmas!!
+Growing Little Ones Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Timmy's Toy Box :) :) :) :)
i beg to differ. the sphero droid has voice recognition and is more interactive. the hasbro version is like a rc car
+Digvijay T - glad you like sphero. Check out my vid on the force band coming this fall that will control it. Thanks for watching.
Digvijay T True. The Sphero has better range, more interaction and can do much more! It even interacts while you are watching the force awakens! Cool huh! Also, yes the hasbro is pretty much a big RC car.
I bought the Sphero BB-8 in response to this one and I love it after a few hours. Thanks for the vid guys. :)
+Agent Vengeance - glad it was helpful. - thanks for watching
I was using the head to make it cute and look like he was looking around on the remote control one.
+ZJ2804 - yeah, that's fun. Thanks for watching.
I reccomend the sphero. It has more things to do, it's cleaner, least likely to break and it has it's own personality.
The remote control one can break there's barely any things to do, smooth movement though.

x8xptx8x no sounds, unable to run unless app is on means failure. it could have been perfect :/
shaolin95 you forgot the Force Band. With it you can control him without the app on and get other AWESOME features too!
Great video. I'll definitely ask for the Target one for Christmas.
Why would you get the target one???!!!!
I can't afford the Sphero one.
As much as I'd like it.
The target one is shit
+Diego Flores it's still decent for the price too though, it's a novelty thing anyway.
Don't bash someone for having less money.
The hasbro one is great for our five year old. She loves it!
+theoriginaljillybean - thanks for watching.
Im 35 yrs old.and i love that one too😂
The control that you said is to move the head on the sphero, is actually there to line up the sphero with you, so you can control it easy.
thanks i was waiting for a video like this
+Julio Sanchez You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
i like how his head almost whips back when he moves forward. almost like he's goin so fast that it whips back lol. pretty cute!
+plane lover Thanks for watching.
Yeah, Sphero one is definitely for collectors and more mature responsible fans, Hasbro one is for little kids to throw around house XD
Nice comparison =)
+Trakker1985 Glad you liked it, thanks.
wow I was looking all over for this comparison!
+joe spadaford Thanks for watching and commenting
I'm getting it on christmas
I want the sphero one so bad! I met that one for the first time yesterday and fell in love!
+Ron Kitsko Thanks for watching.
This is just what I needed to decide which one to get. I feel the Target one is too loud (while it rolls), wobbles a little too much while still, and too big. Hi BB-8 fans! I have a new vid up showing a demo of the Force Band from Sphero coming this fall that will allow you to control BB-8 with hand movements. Exclusive video from Toy Fair 2016 New York! Check out my channel page to see it.
great great wow
Timmy's Toy Box thank you for letting us see which one is better! I have the sphero bb8
I got sphero on xmas and I cried tears of joy when I got it I took out my phone and started playing with it

+galaman Thanks for the input and for watching.
Timmy's Toy Box No prob, keep up the good work!
I hear there's a Disney Store version in the UK that's coming here for $50 closer to the release thats remote control too
+bbcoachSuperman - (Brian Rokosz) We'll keep an eye out, thanks for watching.
Yep but it's not remote control I think. It's on sale now. It makes noise etc.
wait you mean it's coming here to the US?
Ya its really lame tho. There's a single wheel on the bottom so it doesn't roll and isn't controllable. You push its head and it beeps and randomly rolls places.
I know what it does. I want it for the collection and display, not for the playability.
Wow the sphero is worth the extra money! Got it for my girl and for her is the cutest thing ever.
+Angel Feliciano - thanks for watching.
Despite being expensive, Sphero does a much better job on BB-8 than Hasbro.
+Mathew Seaman - thanks for watching
Thank you for the comparison! I didn't even know there was a Hasbro version until I stumbled across this video. I chose wisely; the sphero BB-8 is the clear winner!
+John Giallanza - thanks for watching
I prefer the Sphero BB-8
Great comparison review. The Sphero pips it for me as I collect 1/6 figures and this is almost in scale to them
+Angelo Stephens Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching.
hasbro's is like the fake Chinese version of sphero's bb-8
+Phobiaa Thanks for watching.
XD
Atleast the hasbro one isn’t as annoying as the knockoff sphero
Hasbro Size + Sphero Functions & Price= Paradise :3
+Veloz2014 - thanks for watching.
I have got one question the sphero bb-8 is very resistant ?
hard to say. it can bump into things, but i'm scared to drop it. not sure how much it can take. thanks for watching
+Timmy's Toy Box thanks
Yep! Try not to drop it from very high though. Sphero can bump into things but the head stays attached more often than the Hasbro one.
And the sphero 2.0 is good drop?
And the ollie is Good for drop?
sphero bb8 is water resistant and very durable
Not sure if you figured it out, but you can calibrate the sphero by directing the blue light toward you before driving.
+Bizarro4s I have since learned that. Thanks for watching.
trust me the sphero is much more durable
I can see the droid builders club using the upscaled spherotech style (I know some already have) to make these guys.
+Crixe - Thanks for watching.
"WOW" - Jeff J 2015
+FatCatMedia - lol, thanks for watching.
Thanks for explaining the differences between the two so well.
+Peggy Kavanaugh - thanks for watching.
I'd say the Sphero BB-8 is better, no offense Hasbro 😅
Thanks nice BB8 video
Thanks for active translate. Thanks for your video LIKE
BB-8 makes me smile everytime...I need one to be happy.
+Os. Rod. (i am Osvitronik) It does have that affect on people. Thanks for watching.

The control to your right on the app is to originate the droid. You simply rotate the head so the blue dot is pointed towards you! That allows you to have amazing control with the directional circle on the left.

sphereo.

The Hasbro one is way too slow. Also make lots of noise.
+Mexican “Beans Bot” Eyebot - thanks for watching.
I have the sphero BB-8, and it is great! With the release of the force band I am very exited!
If I had the money to blow i'd definitly get a Sphero
+Josh Oliver - thanks for watching.
Glad I was able to get 5 of the Sphero BB-8s. One to play and the other four to keep.
+chris beltran Keep for what? Thanks for watching.
+Timmy's Toy Box I am a Star Wars fan/toy collector. Even have most of the Stormtrooper action figures still in their packaging from the 80's. Thanks!

Awesome comparison. I can't decide if I should save up and wait for the expensive one. Thanks!
Save up the sphero is a way better route its unbrakeable I have my own and I'm 15 I do some stupid stuff that should break it but it direct break
+Rachel Wagner Thanks. Thanks for watching.
Which one would Ronaldo kick?
+Hidious Vanity Thanks for watching.
The strength of the Sphero model is the awesome apps that work with it. It's fun lasts longer because once you're bored with simply driving it, you can download apps to get it to perform macros or even write code for it. +ValseMusic I'm excited to look more into the code possibilities. Thanks for watching.
+Timmy's Toy Box Cool! Though I should note I've only used an Ollie. I'm assuming it works the same way for the BB-88.
As i have the sphero bb8 i can say the hasbro one looks like a plastic piece of s***
