As always I thank you again for the shout-out Steve! That wall of CRTs is easily the coolest thing I've ever done with my collection, it was a monstrous task to plan all of that but seeing the joy it brought everyone was absolutely worth it. It feels like my years of collecting these things all cumulated into that display for sure! I'm definitely going to be at the 2025 Retro World Expo as well, this time around I plan on fully documenting the construction of that CRT wall so I can show how I did all of that on my channel. And hopefully at next year's show my wiring won't be such a rat's nest 😆
Cool to see all those CRTs actually in use! Literally don’t make them like they used to. You can always have more CRTs, but I’m glad I’ve got my collection of them.
I had a killowatt meter plugged into that CRT wall and shockingly enough (pun mildly intended) the entire thing only drew around 1100 watts! I'm sure the combined voltage of all those flybacks screaming away back there was enough to drop an elephant though 😆
I'm pretty satisfied with my Sony Trinitron KV-27S42, which I picked up for $20 on Facebook marketplace in 2021. As someone who only used RF back in the day, I'm loving S-Video. My Trinitron has some geometry issues - mainly warped corners, but nothing terrible or distracting when gaming. I did some tweaking in the service menu - the sharpness and colors are fantastic. I would prefer a 20" screen, but I don't think that size Trinitron comes equipped with S-Video.
I just picked up an 36FV310 for _free_ & that’s also I’ve gotten some other banging SONY’s for free; including the 35XBR48 & 2950Q. The deals are still out there. Rising costs means more people are actually caring for these. And that’s great because I doubt they’ll ever be made again.
Depends on where you live, how long you're willing to wait, how much time you spend searching, etc. I work two jobs and don't have time to search but I do have disposable income. So I don't mind paying a reasonable price for a set in good shape.
As much as it sucks that this hobby is getting ridiculously expensive, more money in it means more incentive for more people to learn to fix them themselves, me included. Got a 8041q for $100 with the black and white issue and was able to fix it. Much more affordable to go that route or save from recyclers (although that's not really easy to do with PVMs, consumer tvs are still pretty easy to find for free). Would love a bigger PVM but the risk in shipping is too dangerous and the only ones I found locally over the years have been way out of my range unfortunately.
I have a Sony 14m4u. Needs some cleaning, calibration, and recap. Unfortunately finding someone to repair them is a hassle in New England and even if I could im sure it would cost an arm and a leg. Im not comfortable doing it myself. Guess its just use it until it something goes wrong which is a bummer.
@@HistoricalGamers Its not that expensive. I had a fella in Houston who does crt and arcade repair and it cost about $250 total for labor and parts. Tricky part is finding someone near you 🤔 maybe searching on the CRT reddit or Facebook groups could help.
I've not been comfortable doing any of this kind of stuff for ages, but longer I've had it in mind closer I feel to trying. I have no experience removing, sourcing or replacing caps, reflowing solder legs ect, and I don't take the skills lightly having tooling experience in completely different areas I know there is always so many little nuances to proper experience. Just making a decent discharge tool, getting some lineman gloves and electrical dialectic grease (better to be a non silicon one I believe) just gives confidence to open up, discharge and properly clean out, then renew anode cap grease so its safer to work on the inside while switch on ect. Doing nothing more than just cleaning out or maybe tweeking flyback pot if needed, with one hand in your pocket while it's on, is just a simple thing to do to give some initial confidence. Then sometime you can think about removing some of the pcbs, maybe film yourself doing it for when you put it back together again. Hopefully there might be some community repair groups knocking around your area you could take a pcb too, or if not you can just watch what videos you can, maybe get some junk electronics like broke dvd players or whatever just to get practice with the tools de-soldiering some caps. You first just have to get the tools and prepare a well ventilated space you can work and just practice on junk to get confidence before attempting on the pcb you don't want to wreck. That's about the point I'm at, I'm going to try fixing one of mine over the summer when I wouldn't be using it anyway.
I see you're from Harrisonburg, VA. I live by Richmond International Airport in Sandston, which is about 2 hours and 15 minutes from you. Anyway to ballpartk the repair price on a vertical collapse of a Sony 8042Q? Maybe even possibly giving you a similar Sony PVM as payment? Just a thought. I'm always up for a road trip and although I did ship one of these Sony's to a buddy in Chicago successfully, I know the odds are against me with these shipping companies these days. Thanks.
I got into retro gaming a few months ago. I was searching for a Trinitron the whole time. I went through a RCA, Sanyo, Toshiba and now I finally landed on a JVC AV27530. The same tube as a D series. I’ve watched videos on the D series vs Trinitrons and I can honestly say I’m finally done searching. This JVC is honestly better than a Trinitron in my opinion Trinitron is very overhyped. Aperture grille looks great for realistic images like movies with real people in it. JVC’s slot tubes are so damn good for retro gaming the way the pixels lay out look better than Aperture grille. I finally got to test a Trinitron at a retro game store and you have to see it to believe it Trinitrons will hurt your eyes after playing for a while.
Just keep your eye out for curbside trash. A few years back I found a 32 inch Toshiba crt with rf, av, component, and s-video but it was so heavy and awkward I had to get help moving it. Good thing I had a friend with a truck.
@ yeahhh been looking at marketplace. Occasionally a good one for super cheap or free will pop up, but it’s luck of the draw. My next bet is curbside, a thrift store, or yard sales, maybe an estate sale.
Holy shit, I didn't realize how lucky I got with some finds in the last few months. Don't buy from other enthusiasts unless they're generous, just trying to make space and don't care about turning this into a part time job.
I wish there were such things in my country... but the samsung syncmaster 1100mb in the video is a great monitor, I have a 997mb 19“ and I am very happy with it, but if I had the 21” 1100mb instead, I would be at the top.
over the last year I've seen countless 20" 600 line PVMS go for under $500. Haven't seen the market this good since precovid. Consumer sets are on the rise still, however.
Wait a sec. I still have my vcr/tv combo i think its toshiba. 19". Had it since i was a kid. Im 31. I bet it still works perfect. How much is it worth?
Why is nobody fabricating good CRTs nowadays? I know there's one company doing this, but it costs the same as a Sony PVM. Lol, we need something accessible.

Hi. Anyone know how to get rid of the rainbow effect from the corner of a CRT? Got this maaaaassive one I’d like to fix or get fixed. Love us some CRTs! Peace!-)
Supply and demand. No one is making them but demand for old media is growing by the day. Even non Sony consumer TV's like Toshiba and Panasonic are now being sold for higher prices. I recommend going to yard sales, estate sales, and storage auctions for some of these TV's.
Yeah there's still a huge supply of these hiding in the houses of boomers. Takes a little bit of elbow grease to go out and find them, but you'd be surprised how many good crts you can get for free or next to free
CRT TVs aren't getting ridiculously expensive. CRT TVs got ridiculously cheap! We just got used to these low prices and are shocked when their prices go back up. When will CRT prices Plateau? When they get expensive enough again to justify reproduction.
It's supply and demand. Supplies are forever decreasing and people are getting back into CRTs so demand is only going to go up. It's either free on a curb or a $300 'vintage gaming tv'. My suggestion for folks is ESTATE SALES. You wont find PVMs but you'll get some decent stuff from the 90s if you're just looking for a basic gaming tv.
