That would be an entire set of new assets that wouldn't be used anywhere. While I understand this is good to give shoots it's own visual identity, I feel like the new version also does it's best to be unique and also showcases that using the same set pieces from other maps you can spin an entirely new map, which what they had going since the new Nuke in CSGO
@@ayanesatomi4250 well, one point of adding new assets is for mappers. tho the big ones that win competitions will draw their own, or at least mostly their own, having textures and assets in the game to be able to just apply in the editor makes mapping simpler to get into

I dunno man just seems kinda "lazy" for lack of a better term. Yeah I'm sure it saves time or whatever but isn't this a new sequel that's supposed to be bigger and better? My fault for expecting more in modern gaming though so that's on me.
@@wagyourtai1 I've never seen most of the winning competition maps use set pieces from Valve, with most of them opting to make their own, maybe sure in some smaller places but not entirety. Lazy for Valve to just make something with existing assets, but I think it's a good showcase how much you can get away with existing assets and Source 2's new tooling

Another thing about this map is that if you get up like 2 metres off the ground, it becomes painfully obvious that the world just ends beyond a certain rectangular area.
This wasn't a problem in the original, cause they put all the trees *outside* the map and had an impressive sky texture that was almost enough detail on its own.

Valve has been imo not excellent about this in their map design recently. Part of the problem I had with Alyx of all things was that everything felt like an indoor, claustrophobic corridor with nothing to make it seem "real" when I looked up, and this was a game with essentially the sole purpose of "selling" the world to me. Ancient itself is a far cry from, say, the amazing Nuke remake "out of bounds" area, but the new CS2 Overpass is actually REALLY GOOD about this. In part due to the skybox being half-decent, but also due to the...overpass...being part of the actual map above the B site. So, I'm finding myself agreeing with Philip in that I'm sick of boring, flat maps like Ancient and want more unique stuff that uses the Z axis if for no reason other than that it helps them feel like a proper location that I'm excited to explore.
*grumble* I can't believe the only wooden rope bridges in Ancient aren't even in the playable space and it's supposed to be an Aztec replacement *grumble*
@@geekay99 I've felt that about the ancient bridge since the map released. It's such a cop-out to make the map look more dynamic in screenshots.

They're gonna spend a year mimicking current Mojang's development cycle in order to add real-time oxidation to select materials via some kind of scripts/drivers.
i think the best way to bring back Aztec without compromise is to put the Aztec theme and layout in the centre of a jungle dangerzone map. It would be nostalgic, because it'll be Aztec, but it doesn't matter if it is balanced for 5v5 competitive because, well, it's dangerzone.
I like the idea of playing Battle Royale on Aztec. Fun game mode on a fun map.
I don't like Danger Zone at all but that's a fire idea

old shoots was great because it came with prebuilt houses and huts as props in csgo sdk :)
i dont mind the new version we all will love it some years but they could have taken some new textures.
Baggage has the nuke theme IMO.
It uses half of the assets from Nuke

Bring back the pirate theme! If they are worried about it only being on shoots, then bring back sugarcane, Seaside or St.Marc! I get people stopped playing them for a reason, but they all had their own interesting layouts and gimmicks.

I was actually waiting for you to mention this. I really do think that the level of detail required for making new maps is a lot higher, a lot of maps made a long time ago wouldn't be possible to create with as much effort is required now.
But its not like average Valve employee doesn't earn around 200000$ in a year. Think of what would you do for that kind of money.

You don’t understand how much easier it is to create maps in s2 hammer. The workflow is literally 10x easier and less confusing than hammer 1, which might as well have been made for the N64. The fact that people were making the maps that they were in source 1 hammer is pretty incredible.

As a game dev, making maps nowadays is actually *easier* than ever. Please stop pretending you have a knowledge about something that you clearly dont, its cringey and misleading to other people.

for the people designing, blocking out and decorating the maps, not to discredit what you guys do but im sure it takes far longer to model and 3d scan all of the assets if you were going to make a cs2 quality map from scratch

Valve seems to reduce their mapping to very few “themes” with assets they can mix and match.
Right now we only have four of those themes which makes the map-pool seem very uniform. These are:
Warehouse theme (Nuke, Vertigo, Baggage)
Italy theme (Italy, Inferno)
Arabia theme (Mirage, Anubis, D2)
Jungle theme (Ancient, Shoots)
The only one that’s visually unique is Overpass.

Well we used to have old URSS facility theme in train and cache instead of the jungle theme so its not like things changed so much.
If anything overpass is the urban city scenario we never really got on maps other than the few temporary community ones during operations. Closest to q similar theme was office.
watch as they make assault with an overpass theme, or better yet they do that with lunacy and remove the cool theming it had originally. (they better not actually do that with lunacy its such a unique-looking map)

I felt the exact same way about the new assets. Yeah they look nice from a objective standpoint, but lack all personality, like they were adapted to be there and not made with that specific area in mind. I miss the old personality of shoots, there was this rustic and gritty style to csgo at release that has just been completely abandoned. The only way to go back to that time was to play the older and lesser played maps. Now this new version feels like it could have been made in the Farcry map editor. Everything feels like its made of plastic and i want some real textures. Whats the use of all the pbr textures when everything looks like caramel. Make cs2 not a generic fps with great gameplay, give it some thought and personality like every previous valve game. RN everything feels like a videogame made for competition and not to be enjoyed.

My brother in christ youre playing one of the most sweaty tryhard mechanic skill heavy competitive games in the world whos sole existence is half because of said E-sports and the other half is the ultra inflated skin market thats basically NFTs. Why do you think updates are so slow, we only got 3 weapons since release and those are basically meme weapons RN, and the game balance has never shifted besides eco round choices? Because everything in the game comes down to how quick and precisely you can click a head with an AK/click with the AWP and how many grenade bounce pixels you decorated.

I hate that they're slowly taking away the variety of designs and locations, the most recent maps tend to be either set in Italy, somewhere near Italy, or America. After all, it isn't 'Global Offensive' anymore.
Anubis is egypt. Not exactly new but not like we get new maps often, anything past the original releases at this point is new i guess. I mesn what did you expect? This is game exists almost solely because of E-sports and the other reason is to sell NFTs disguised as gacha skins. (I still to this day dont know why those dont get as much hate as every other lootbox. Is it because players themselves can profit out of them?) The game has absolutely minimal changes that also take absurdly long to develop, its funny how one of the plagues of today entertainiment industry is crunch times, but then theres things like valve and mojang who absolutely just slack off and take obsenely long to deliver simple updates that arent proportional to the ammount of resources that they should have to pour into the game.

Valve really should bring back the map themed t and ct characters. Offices terrorists was unique and cool but now we only have the default one. We can't even track the damage we dealt because all the players look the same (if they dont have character skins).

even in old CS, despite how unfair the map geometry is, it still used alot on old Esport tourneys back then so adding it back to CS2 wouldnt affect competitive scene that bad even though it'll end up reusing Ancient map assets

I played alot of arms race in CSGO and playing the new shoots somehow feels smaller idk if actualy is any smaller but it definitely feels that way

I’m sure for most people it isn’t a bother but man, knowing of Ancient’s assets were built like tiles to be easily combined, that’s all I see the parts rather than the whole.
It’s like playing a halo reach forge map. You know what the thing they built is trying to be, but the illusion is broken because you can pick out all the parts they used to build it.
I love the point about not being able to see the difference between the floor and everything else. Also new shoots has lost the ability to get on to the opposing roof and camp the enemy spawn, which was tricky to do but extremely rewarding.

My favourite part of CSGO was the unique maps and game modes. I plaed alot of arms race and demolition just to have fun on maps like Bank, Sugercane, St Marc. It gave the game a deeper feeling of unexplained lore. I'm sure CS2 will add a breadth of maps in the future but I have a sneaking suspicion that there will never be the same motivation to give the game such a complete feeling.
I think the the whole de_ancient palette has surprisingly poor readability. it's pretty flat and lacks colour contrast, which in theory might make enemies more visible but I find it's just harder to see corners and map features.
and the all the materials and assets (and water) are extremely hardware intensive to run as far as CS maps go. new shoots runs bad with multiple players on screen.
I think it would be interesting if there is a max amount of bang-able ;) brushes, like maybe after 3 solid brushes it would always stop damage. (I always thought brush materials stopped bullets, I guess they mussed up with the new design of the map.) Anyway, always awesome videos :)

Just to maybe help clear up the tarp asset thing... from my time modding Half-life Alyx, i found you can take a tarp asset and use a cloth sim to drape it over things. So maybe they used the same tarp and draped it over a different object
The trees on top of stone buildings show you how much thought went into this map, very little.
Monastery for me was the most individual war games map and it had decent verticality, always thought it would have been cool af if someone reused its assets for a competitive map
My problem is that normally arms race and demolition were always the easiest map to run since they were so old, now I can't run them as easily. I get like 40fps when like horrible frame drops all the way to like 3 fps.
and before anyone asks, I am a laptop gamer, no I'm not using a laptop from 1975, its a 2018 laptop with core i7-8550U and Nvidia 930mx. my whole system at max power only draws like 50 Watts, and so of course it can't run the game fast when modern desktop CPU's alone use like 60W, and mind you a laptop is a whole CPU, GPU, Motherboard, Ram, fan, monitor and everything, all under 60 watts.
Cs:go had a couple maps in this tropical carribean aesthetic, i really liked them
This isn't super related to your video, but I had this idea while watching. I think CS should do what Paladins did with their maps after they were getting a bit stale. They introduced a beta maps playlist that had regularly changing and rotating map pools of untextured/unfinished maps with experimental designs. Imagine an official playlist that randomly selected some Workshop or unfinished beta maps every week.

Speaking of losing identity... I still cannot get over the fact that they still did not bring unique, map-own agents based on location and game mode. This is sad af with the map, I was not flabbergasted by shoots but it reminded me of the agents discussion. There is no depth in the game yet!

whenever a new map for CS releases I always have such a fun time exploring, checking out all the new props and textures that make each map special. With Shoots, I spent about two minutes looking around and had seen all there was to see, since so much of it was just ancient. The water running down the middle is very nice, though. I wish they'd given it a brand new look, or updated Shoot's original look, rather than just copy pasting ancient's assets and slapping them on Shoot's blueprint.
I dont love the new shoots but i do love when they pair maps like that. I liked having canals and rialto be the same theme bit completely different maps.
They may as well have saved all the time and effort and just released shoots as an orange dev texture map because that’s how soulless Ancient’s assets are.
Oh well at least arms race is finally back and I won’t be fully satisfied until they release lake and safehouse

Back when CSGO was still a thing, I made a recreation of the map "complex" from N64 Goldeneye, as a defusal and arms race/deathmatch map.
I used Aztecs theme for it, simply because I'm one man and Aztecs theme is by FAR the easiest and simplest visual theme to replicate.
I would assume this was Valves reason as well, but it's kinda weird and disappointing considering the original map had its own interesting identity.
Glad to see you can still jump on the roofs, although I think triangle roofs were more fun for that. My main complaint is that the floor, walls and some CTs are all slightly green.

Baggage also just looks like Nuke. Best case scenario they did this to save on devtime and are focusing on getting the actual gamemodes back into CS2 and later down the line will redo the maps again

I played if for the first time today and all the new vertical stuff threw me off but also there’s what feels to be a bunch of new angles through windows and stuff that I didn’t know about before. Also looking through the windows makes it hard to see where in the interior I’m looking through

With the tarpaulin; in Source 2 you can simulate them physically dropping into place and then freeze their final position so a lot of them shouldn't be similar
