- This is a video documenting an inexperienced old dude attempting to preform a cylinder rebuild without the proper training. I got lucky and managed a successful outcome. If you are attempting a similar project please be careful!
"Determination" is the word that comes to my mind when watching you tackle this difficult task, humbly accepting that it was not in you vast experience dealing with power machine hydraulics was also motivating, at the end you succeeded and that's why I going to keep watching your content, it is a vivid tell of "never giving up",' inspiring....PS: I got really worried watching that heavy shaft coming your way, thank God it was just a stumble, please be safe.
Thanks Chugaaa!
Once again you win the viewer of the week award.

Pro tip on this type of primary cylinder, we leave the cylinder in the lift. Lower the carriage on to blocks, pull off the chains, remove the pulley and gland nut. If we have to pull the rod, we use the hydraulics to raise the piston to the top of the cylinder and then pull it out.
Thank you for the tip! I posted this thinking it would be just another one of my 200 view videos. It has actually been viewed quite a few times and I hope most of those viewers are smart enough to know a “how to” video from well, how I did it.

Your a brave man Barry, im am terrified of hydraulics. Especially maintenance work were parts might still be under load. You have one big angel sitting on your shoulder, that was a close call.
Thanks Jop! That was a stupid move on my part not watching the top of the cylinder when I knew it was coming down and I was pretty lucky. Pretty simple system, when turned off there is no stored energy other that gravity.
When we have old equipment and or tools it it either fix it yourself of scrap it. No way I could justify a wrecker truck to haul it to a shop, shop fees, and a return haul. The machine just isn't worth it.
Barry
@@barrylukebuilds7894 I totally agree with you, and would have attempted the same :) Old iron need some people like us caring for them
Thought you might have bit off more than you could chew, but have watched you enough now to know better. Great job Barry.
Thank you Robin!
Whew! That could easily have been a serious injury. But you got her done! Probably last another 20 years.
Joe
Yea I was lucky. I saw it start to fall. Not soon enough to stop it but with enough time to get my head down and my arm up. Forklifts are so difficult to work on, if it ever sprouts a leak from it's under belly, scrap iron time!
Often takes a forklift to fix a forklift. Do be extra careful. Because I like your videos.
Darrin
I will try to be a little more careful and hopefully no more fork lift repairs.
Barry
Thank you for making this. Very insightful. About to do the same to my Clark 3 stage. Going to try to repair without taking off forklift. We will see how it goes.
FF
You are quite welcome! Good luck with your project and be careful.
Barry
All the stuff you said not to do...you did lol, when that cylinder started falling your way my heart dropped! Good on you for doing it your self, but damn bud. Thanks for sharing
Damn that was scary..
Thanks Donnie! I cant help it, I have to at least try.
Barry
@@barrylukebuilds7894 For sure, just don't die trying it bud! Us old effers are as stubborn as they come, Fact. But as an old race car driver, I know, one can't win the race if one don't finish the race. We might not be looking to win it no more but our people want us to finish it. JS and much respect
Thanks for this video when I searched this problem on Google cuz I'm new to do in hydraulic work on forklifts this was the first video that came up so it must be very popular and this is the same exact problem that the forklift I have to work on at work has the main cylinder in the middle is leaking I've been in maintenance for a very long time doing an electrical and mechanical work for 7 plus years but I have never done hydraulic work so thank you so much I feel more confident if I have to take on this task at work now
And I'm glad that that cylinder did not hit your head in that you're safe and thanks for sharing this video
Thanks for taking the time to comment and I am glad the video was of some help.
Barry
That was scary, glad you’re okay!
Yea, scary. I saw it coming, not soon enough to stop it but in time to get my head down.
That was a baller move because you didn't know what you didn't know. I am considering doing one of my lift cylinders but you make me consider whether the $1,000 I would spend on a mechanic is worth my life or a hand.
$1000 doesn't sound too bad but keep in mind my total cost was $80 for the new seals and another $100 for 10 gallons of oil. I just went about it in a kind of a back asswards way( because I didn't know what I didn't know).
Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment.
Barry
18:00 thats when you run into this problem you can clean the groove up with brake cleaner, and pack the gtoove with bondo, make it nice and smooth put the cap on then clean the bondo out of the groove.
Roger
Thanks for the tip! I have it filled away in the old brain so that if I need it in the future I will have to look up your response again because no way will I be able to remember.
Thanks Barry
Those seals and wipers go in easier if you soak them in hot water for a bit. They also make a neat tool that folds the wiper into a 'W' shape and then lets it loose to snap into its groove.
Good tip, thanks Douglas
Would seem a good time for a pressure wash. Clean is good around hydraulics or any time.
You are probably right but it probably isn't going to happen.
That could have been game over!
Luckily it would have hit me in the head, a fairly useless part of my whole.
Barry
What website did you find your seals for rebuild?
I went to a local hydraulics repair shop and they measured them up and ordered them for me. Pretty easy to get.
This was incredibly painful to watch. I’m not sure how you’ve made it through as much life as you have without inadvertently killing yourself.
Good question.

Yup!
Oh my God, I was scared....
I wasn’t scared, until afterwards.
Hilarious!
Glad I was able to provide some entertainment in these less than glorious times.
