Barry Luke Builds
United States
Приєднався 18 бер 2012
Barry likes to make things. He has a small foundry where non Ferris metals are cast and all sorts of items are welded. There is a wood working shop where his wooden projects are created. Home projects are ongoing like building custom steel gates and placing concrete walks. A houseboat floating on the Blood River has been the birth of many marine renovation projects and upgrades. His bride is quite the sculptor so there are lots of molds and art casts going on. And Barry was re purposing objects long before it was the cool thing to do.
Trouble Shooting and Learning About a Troy Built Cultivator
Another impulse buy, this time a garage sale cultivator. Wasn't looking for a cultivator and I didn't need a cultivator but that didn't stop me from buying a cultivator. It was a bargain, or so I thought. So, when a major problem was discovered, I had a decision to make...

An upcoming project will require moving a bunch of 1 1/2" thick hardwood planks out of and back into the house. Colin's hunting in the country so I am home trying to give him a little peace and looking for a project to keep myself busy. I don't need this now, but I will in the spring so let the fun begin!
Safely dropping a hung, stuck, widow maker, fallen tree with medium tree cutting skills.

We have lots of these hung trees on our property. Many are Chinese Tallow (popcorn) trees I have cut or killed that didn't make it to the ground. We also have bug damaged pines, some have fallen to the ground, some have tried to fall but are hung up, and many others are just biding their time and will be falling soon. And like this apparently healthy tree, storms have also taken a toll. My long...
Taking care of some deferred structural maintenance on my outdoor shower area.

A wonky initial build, some track hoe damage, and 20 years of South Louisiana weather has taken a toll on my little outdoor shower area. Trying to give my home a little love for a change, instead of pouring all of my energies on other projects. And as usual, a lot of scrimping going on.

Back door shoe bench build. A place to sit and put on or take off your shoes.

Using Raptor urethane on the mini hoe sheet metal straightening project.
Переглядів 3642 місяці тому
Building trails through the woods was kind of hard on the mini hoe sheet metal. Lots of tight squeezes, uprooted trees, and slippery footings was cause for a lot of sheet metal damage where there was none before, and I did them all. In this video I made a valiant attempt to straighten out all of the bends and kinks but in the end, it was the Raptor that saved the day.

Our house is behind another house. We are lucky enough to own them both. We share the drive most of the way, but the back half is used mostly by us. Part of the back half had some serious issues. The quality of one particular section does not match the quality of the majority and that section was really falling apart. The track hoe was in town at my son's house, and it has been super dry, so I ...
We replaced our nonfunctioning gate operators with another brand. It was a little involved!
Переглядів 3073 місяці тому
The new actuators have a shorter stroke than the existing ones. Compounding this problem was that the instructions were written for a different gate mount than our set up. Why I chose this project to even attempt to follow instructions I have no clue. The old man was frustrated. But I muddled through and once I discarded the instruction charts, we figured out a working setup. If you would like ...
DIY build of Roll Up Sunscreens to help keep the cabin screened porch a little cooler in the summer.

This is a video about how I assembled a version of roll up sunscreens for the cabin porch. The material I purchased for the screen turned out to be not the best, but we muddled through, and in the end we have a simple effective easy to use system. Enjoy and please hit the like button. Thanks Barry

More better? Is it the gooderest?
Not sure if it’s the gooderest, but it is a long way from the worstest!
I’ve been watching your videos sense the boat build. Do you still have your boat? I enjoy all the different projects you do.
Danny Not sure what is in order, thanks for watching or condolences for watching. I am going to go with thanks! Still have the boat. I have made a couple of half hearted efforts at selling it but non came to fruition. Kinda sad because it is running perfectly but nobody around here is interested in an ETec. Barry

Barry, do not get rid of this tiller, I am not on the forums yet but I do have a 70s model horse that I Honda swapped years ago and it runs strong. I also think that gear is supposed to look like that, I have seen many gears that are cut that specific way to allow the shaft gear to spin/rotate it. If it was cut flat it would not make full engagement and be less strong and therefore, not last. You've got a wonderful tiller that is so much better than newer models it us definitely worth restoration and parts on ebay are not as hard to get as you think. There is always someone parting out one of the horse killers on there. Good luck on whatever you decide, you got this
Well, nevermind. I commented before watching the end. Sad you lost money on the deal but at least you learned some stuff about them and you are better prepared for the next one. I still believe these tiller are the best homeowner/Comercial grade tillers ever made. Great machines. Hope you're able to find another.
Sorry Thad, it is long gone. It went to a guy who really wanted it and even though he lived in a different city he made it happen. I am sure it could have been a good project but my heart just wasn’t in it. But thanks for trying!
I had one. Good machine.
Thanks Joe!
When you go down a rabbit hole, you don't stop. Glad you were able to let it go. I bought my Troy horse in 87 and about 3 years ago I put a Harbor freight predator motor on it and gave to my neighbor. I hadn't use it in 20 years. It's still going strong.
Thanks Robin. A good project for someone but just not for me right now. I have too many other projects that interest me more right now. I think it went to a good home. Barry
Barry you're that far into that, it needs to be restored. But we do have the same approach on that stuff, try it first then refer to UA-cam university. That's the only way we were able to learn back in the good old days ( minus UA-cam)
Thanks Paul It went to a home where someone needed it much more than me. Let’s see, lost on the Troy cultivar, positive on the Truckster, lost big time on the Honda. Glad my real estate deals have a better track record! Barry
I saw one of these installed below the land surface on planks. The owner could enter the greenhouse tent cover to service the 4-taks he installed.
Interesting set up Fidel, interesting. Thanks

You are quite welcome Mr Hart!
Inspirational!
Thank you! Always nice to get a comment on an older video.
Interesting cart. Should do well for that project. I appreciate your forethought and planning of these projects. As I get older I am seeing the value to planning things out well ahead. Look forward to seeing you redo that floor. Is there a sub floor below those planks, or are the planks attached directly to the joists?
Thank you Benjamin! There are treated sleepers (2x2 if I remember correctly) fastened to the slab. The floor planks are fastened to the sleepers. I think the sleepers are sound, just the floor planks getting loose. I will know in a couple of months!
That foldable handle is genius! Looking forward to the floor project. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Donnie! Us old folks have to look after our backs, right?
@@barrylukebuilds7894 For reals!
That's a big undertaking on that floor, knowing you I know you will get it done. The cart is just what I'm looking for, I need to move around about 25 railroad ties. I need to find me some wheels. Thanks for the video. We had 7 ½" of snow in Mobile, broke a 130 year old record.
Railroad ties are the worst! My assortment of bikes that I play with all come from the side of the road. Kids grow up and bikes get tossed. Yes it will be quite a project but my bride has been a road block for quite a while. But when my son states that it should be done then all of a sudden I get a green light. Funny how that works. PS The snow was great!
12:01 What about using a 2x4 to stretch plastic to help forming flat spot? Just curious. Learning. Live in camper ft
Love, thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment. You saw how I used plywood and a bolt to shape my flat spots. I thought it went pretty well. Not sure what you mean by using a 2x4 but IF I were to ever do it again, I would probably just do it the same way. Barry
I like more better.
That makes me most happy!

Thanks for watching, it is a loblolly pine. Extensively grown for lumber and plywood. Barry
Wow! That was totally wrong. Hadn’t had my coffee yet. Most of our trees are loblolly. This tree was a short leaf pine. Not commercially grown, not sure why.
Neat project seems to work well. A skid loader will grade that just fine with a dirt bucket. You set grade driving forward then smoth it out with a back drag. It will be perfectly flat with no track marks.
Thanks man! I agree, skid steers are awesome, but I don’t have one. Barry
Glad this was a how NOT TO video.
Mr. Bill Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment. 1) never claimed it to be a “how to “ video, and 2) even negative comments help my channel. Have a nice day!
The kid and I enjoyed watching it! Thanks Barry :)
First you have a baby, then a toddler, and now a little buddy. Pretty soon you will have a real helper! Thanks Barry
If you cut a sprung trunk at an angle away from you, worst case if it kicks you are safe (er).
Thanks Joe! Makes sense
I was a little surprised to see you use a propane torch compared to the method I learned for forming those kinds of plastic items using a heat gun. Granted, your method is best for locations where electricity is not available. I wonder your opinion of making that system using 6 barrels rather than 2 or 3. You think that it would be good with a bubbling stone aerator on barrels 3 and 4 in said system to help treat the waste water before it reaches a leeching field? Possibly every other after barrel 2? And as to limit the slug build up with regular pumping of barrels 1 and 2? I like to ponder these things for little build ideas as a nice way of reusing existing concepts that we use for some fun site ideas. Like a mini-septic system for a park bathroom that limits the impact of a nature trails park.
GF Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment. I have an electric heat gun but those Drums and pretty stout and I needed to heat a large area to I needed the extra BYU’s from the torch. I believe 6 drums would produce cleaner effluent than 3 and would extend the time between necessary pump outs. Absolutely do not aerate every other drum as your anaerobic and aerobic bacteria would both be diminished. Thanks again Barry
Keep plugging away. Always more to do. Im doing the same stuff at my house.
Thanks John, Hopefully the guy you are following was not as reckless as the guy I am following!
Barry... i have a saying "Free is always better" most if not all the time you use the free stuff you get but in that off chance you get something and it doesn't work out, you can put it right back where you got it from(so to speak) and it is still Free. Amazing! Love the rebuild, you did a good job. Watch the pennies and the dollars take care of themselves. Carry on good sir!
@@thaddeustroyer I have an old say almost like that...... If it's free it's for me!
Thanks Thad! I agree and especially agree with your second paragraph. Barry
Barry I'm with you, can't stand the cold. We have more of that cold coming next week as well. Your project came out looking great. Your frugal, and not a cheapskate. Have a great day.
Robin I like that word, frugal. Maybe I can get my wife to use it sometimes. She mostly uses altered and diminished to describe me now, and I don’t think that is very nice.
I’m a cheapskate, too. I hate spending money on new junk when I can make do with old junk.
Thanks Joe. Old junk and old guys rule!
Also Barry have you tried Rapidset concrete? Not sure if that's what you used. But I watch a channel called Michael builds, he builds all things concrete. That stuff sets and is ready to handle and move in an hour
That is the product that I was using. But if allowed to freeze before all of the mix water has reacted with the Portland cement the water will expand and the concrete will be forever damaged. I think I squeaked by!
Brother I feel your pain about the pavers, I had 4 pallets in my back yard, every time my grandkids would come over that is what they wanted to play with the most. Forts, thrones, etc....etc... always had to pick them up and restack them before I mowed. The things we let our grandbabies get away with
Yup, whatever they want is pretty much what they get.
@@barrylukebuilds7894we both know that it’s better than the alternative, which is the kids being inside playing video games all day!
@@davidluke8460 100% agree!

Get a one inch putty knife and round the blade over so the radius fits in the corner to smooth the butter ,nice job
Thanks Kevin!!!!
Next time, groove the rails to fit the rabbit on the stiles. It's like a cabinet door.
Wouldn’t that be more like a Home Depot door?
Under the power lines would likely be in an easement held by the power company. If work was needed on your power lines any damage done to your system would be your responsibility. At least that’s how it works in our neck of the woods. Interesting video. I enjoy watching innovation in action.
Skid Man Thanks for watching and the kind words and for taking the time to comment. Basically you are correct about the servitude. In our case it is a little different. There is no underground servitude, only the overhead to my cabin. No more additional work is anticipated as this is our private property and we decide future expansions, not the power company. They do have the option to inter our property at 5 year intervals to trim the trees back from their lines. Should be a nonevent. Barry
So question; Do you put antifreeze in the tire as well? Or can you still drive the tractor if the water freezes?
Good thought! I did not add antifreeze, don’t think it ever gets cold enough here to freeze. If it gets that cold I will bet money I would be riding around on that tractor. An anti rust chemical might be a good idea though.
The strap is my go to. Good job Barry.
Robin The strap is the way to go! Just found out from my coast guard son that they used a strap on the C 130 tires. A BIG strap with a hydraulic tightening device, but a strap just the same.
Sheer determination, right there. My tractor has a flat on it 2 weeks ago at the land , I unfortunately had to take it off and bring it back home to fix. It had a tube in it. Luckily it's only the front tire.
Thanks Paul. We also had a front flat a while back. Like you I was able to get it off and bring it to the tire guy. Fixed it while I waited and charged $10!
Gracias!!.
You are welcome!
I just started a boat restoration project myself, your videos have been very helpful. Thank you sir!
Dale Glad you have enjoyed the videos and thank you for taking the time to comment. Barry
Very nice shoe put on put off bench / stool Barry, hat off.
Thank you Albert! Kind words always appreciated. Good luck on the new year!
Classic 50 gallon system always works like a charm! Regarding using IBC totes for septic, they are very easy to shore up to prevent collapse. The metal cage they usually come with provides an excellent structure to attach plywood or any other rigid material. Super easy extra step to take. Many might prefer to take the extra step to get a much larger capacity system if it's full time living with multiple people and/or both black and gray water using the same septic system. In other words, don't be scared to use IBC totes for septic!
C Good Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment. Lots of totes out there so I guess they work, just not in my comfort zone. Barry
What state are you in? I was wondering due to your water tank and the exposed pipes.
Denise The cabin sits in the Southern part of Mississippi. Not to worried about my PEX freezing but was concerned about the little plastic 12v water pump. Built an insulated cabinet to house the electric water heater and moved the water pump into the cabinet where it is always warm. Besides that, if is too cold we just don’t go. Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment. Barry
You did a good job. Weather doesn't always cooperate when we have a job to do. Some might complain or say you did it wrong but I don',t see thier video showing them doing a "great " job.
Thanks again Denise! I agree, lots of ways to do things and lots of things irritate folks. Kinda sad in a way but I am married so criticism makes me feel at home 😏

I can't believe your channel doesn't have more subs. I think you have the ultimate diy channel. I learn something every time I watch. Thanks Barry, have a great week brother
Thank you Paul! The word on the street is if you want a successful channel pick a subject and stick with it. So much for that. Being young and attractive doesn’t hurt either, strike two. And then there is first class filmmaking, editing, voice overs, and all that stuff that challenges me. Well what’s left? I just like to make and do stuff and most of the time enjoy the filming part. Lots of excellent options out there for folks to watch. I am grateful for my little group of regulars, like yourself. Buy the way, my septic tank video has had over 330,000 views! Hard to believe.
@barrylukebuilds7894 that's awesome on the septic tank video for sure. I know I definitely watched it. I have land up north east Texas and plan to do the exact same thing. I just love your energy, I'm 53 and have had 5 back surgeries, but I still get out to the shop and work ( mainly piddle) but your video just hit home because I do believe you and I are a lot alike, I hate spending money when I can just pull a few nails and reclaim something.
I know someone who used a tote and your wright it collapsed.
Jokker Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment. That may happen more than people want to admit.
Nice project! It might have been easier to shape the pvc flange to the radius of the drum by dunking it in boiling water then bending in place. My $.02.
Edward Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment. I didn’t try to bend the flanges but my guess would be that the flat profile or the drum material deformed much easier than trying to bend the three dimensional shape of the flange adapter. Don’t actually know because I never tried. My $.02. Barry
