Barry likes to make things. He has a small foundry where non Ferris metals are cast and all sorts of items are welded. There is a wood working shop where his wooden projects are created. Home projects are ongoing like building custom steel gates and placing concrete walks. A houseboat floating on the Blood River has been the birth of many marine renovation projects and upgrades. His bride is quite the sculptor so there are lots of molds and art casts going on. And Barry was re purposing objects long before it was the cool thing to do.
The more better off grid camp/camper septic system install part 2. The leach field.
In this video we construct a simple more or less standard gravel leach field. I added an unusual feature so that I will be able to keep tabs on how the septic tanks are functioning. And I am thinking hard about adding a monitor well on the downstream of the leach field to keep tabs on it also. Remember, this system is for small scale off grid camps. Constructing your own septic system in most municipalities will get your hand slapped for sure. Enjoy

Our existing system of waste disposal using a 12v macerator pump has been working but it is a hands-on set up and the bride has been grumbling. So, a true septic gravity system has been under construction in my head for quite a while. Time to but all that thinking to use.
When one of the trees supporting the treehouse turns out to be dead, precision removal is required.

I started the treehouse build last winter when the trees were mostly bare. Come springtime I discovered a problem, one of the two trees I built around was not well. Like the coroner in The Wizard of Oz said, " it was not just merely dead, it was really quite sincerely dead". Too late to turn back, we finished the build and now we are removing the top part of the tree, attempting to not destroy ...

The old 16" tandem with the goofy trailer didn't get smaller, but the kids got bigger. With a little time on my hands, I decided to build another. This time no trailer, just a spot for a little one in the middle and an upgrade to 20" frames. There is a big difference between a 16" kiddie frame and a 20" BMX frame in terms of strength and rideability. Enjoy!

It had just become a ride that was unusable. We transferred her into the now emptier foundry building and started the investigation. The best treehouse for kids in the trees ever built is complete, sort of.

The roof is complete, the stair (ladder) landing is pretty much done, the handrails are secure, what's left is minor. Time to move on, let the grand kids move in. One day I will put a latch on the door and make the two of the windows operable, but not this day. Treehouse progress and dealing with a structural problem that may or may not exist.

After a long two-week absence, we are back at it. The back "gable" overhang proved to be an access issue as I appear to be about a foot short of ideal. But we made it happen, and my bride survived her "modified stationary panic attack" as I made do with an extension ladder. Most of the existing handrail structures were modified, and a door was changed into a window, literarily. Only a little mo...

I commend you for your hard work and ingenuity Sir.
Thank you Mike! Kind words always appreciated.
and by adding as little as a tablespoon of bakers yeast to septic system you can break down any material setting in tanks and getting a better liquid flow. the yeast will not harm the soil bacteria either. Many professional septic plumbers will use yeast to shock septic systems for a rapid clean up/clean out...Even as a child I remember my parents throwing old bread into the outhouse so the yeast in it would help breakdown the waste and the system would last longer....
Thanks John Hard to argue with success and as this will be the first septic system in my life a should listen to experience. Thanks Barry
Good job, Barry! I'm sure that leach filed will do the job! You said you were worried about the porosity of the soil that it's so dense and may not allow liquids to get absorbed - that's a nice long run. I'd bet it will work fine for your family for years the way it is. And you could add to it if you think you need to. Perhaps at the end you could just make a round dry well or something, fill that will the stone and so any overflow will just go into the dry well. An idea perhaps? Can't wait to see you tie it into the house! That'll make the misses happy! Thanks for posting the video. It's fun to watch you do the work. I feel like I am there, giving you moral support, even though you did the work already!
Sam I am and I am not worried. I know that the field is going to be very slow to absorb liquids. I actually added almost 20’ of leach field after posting the video. On the other hand we send such a small amount of liquid maybe twice a week the field should be fine. I put a peek a Bo pipe at the end so that I can keep an eye on what’s going on. Thanks for the kind words, always appreciated, Barry
See what happens when you mix two parts ingenuity with one part imagination? Nicely done, Sir!!
Sunspot Thank you for the kind words! They keep the old man going.
@@barrylukebuilds7894 You are most welcome! What many lack these days is the ability to be resourceful. There are some of us who are very resourceful.
you made a lot more work for yourself by just not waiting for the laser level. Shows that old Victorian work ethic of "always be busy" doesn't always work out. Sometimes just best to go do something else until it's actually time to do the job right.
You are 100% correct. That old hindsight rears its head again.
"A more better"? Seriously? Please tell me this is your sense of humour..... If you were comparing different systems, and you talked about system A. Then you talked about system B, stating it was better than A. Then, you go into system C, and you can say it was "an even better" system. "A more better" is just bad....
So I was thinking of naming the video “much more better “. I guess that would have been more worser?
These septics work much better if you have a cook who periodically bakes bread. The little bits of left over yeast washed off the bowl and boards keep them far more active. Otherwise, you need septic agents poured down the drains annually.
Dwight Thanks for your comment. Several readers had yeast related comments. Most be something to it. No bread making at the cabin, we only have a Coleman cooktop. I am old school on the septic additives. Seems like septic tanks worked for a long long time before all of the chemicals were being hawked. Hope I don’t have to eat my words!
Making a DIY Septic Tank System isn't hard. I've made it with (2) 55 gal plastic drums. When I dug the hole to put it in. I flattened out the bottom of the hole. Put in some P-gravel in the hole. I drilled a bunch of 1" holes at the bottom of the barrels. Put both barrels in the hole put the plumbing in it. Put RipRap around the barrel's, up to halfway, fill it up the rest of the way with dirt. Then your done.
Sounds like a simple plan! Thanks for sharing.
Beyond the project... Good on you for being the guy who just does. I've always had a mind that if you need something.... MAKE IT! The actual cost is your time and for me, my time is free. Best deal I've ever been able to make is free.. Me......
Ken, you are the man. I will always try something once, maybe twice. After that I loose interest and move on. Story of my life. On fortunately, that is one thing I am running out of. But I am not going to go down quietly, lots of stuff to mess with yet! Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to respond. Barry

I used to work on cabins in the rocky mtns and this setup reminds me of the dual 55 gallon drums theyd use, very similar.
Thanks User! I don’t think I have invented anything here. It has all been done before. Except maybe melting the plastic to shape it. That might be a Barry original. Barry
Lot of work went into this project, would have like to have been there to help out. Good job Barry.
Thanks Robin! That would have been nice.
How long would it take the water in the trench to absorb into the ground if you just left it to perk on its own?
That, my friend, is the million dollar question that I don’t have the answer to. Hopefully fast enough to deal with our little bit of waste.
Barry Barry good. :)
Mr Rojas In all my 70 plus years I don’t think I have ever seen that word play. Thank you!
I did this with one 55-gallon drum and one six-foot perforated PVC pipe for the leach field. Very minimal. Been working great for five years. I only run the toilet throught it so antibacterial soap from the shower and sink are not killing the bacteria that keeps the septic tank working.
Wow, that’s good to know. Thanks, this gives me confidence for our setup.
Nice job.
Thank you very much, I am glad you enjoyed!

Scooter Thanks interesting! I have never seen that situation but you have peeked my interest. Thanks Barry
A 4" pipe gasket or 3" depening on the size pipe would work goreat and be alot easier.
Matt I am assuming you are referring to the joint between the flange adapter and the plastic drum? If so, the challenge I was facing was how to tighten that joint without distorting the drum where the top would no longer fit correctly.
@@barrylukebuilds7894 Your concern because of the round barrel the gadget would not seat properly. I see maybe that could be a problem especially with the 4" pipe. I wonder if the pipe would seal properly if it was dropped down to a 2" pipe size with gasket. Your way certainly worked fine. Good vid blessings
This old timer who used to be a septic guy told me to get a gallon of whole milk, leave it out in the sun till it curdled, and the pour it or flush it into the tank. Said it keeps the micro organisms happy. Been doing that for years and never had to pump the tank on my system. For full time use do it every 4 or 5 months. For seasonal properties, once a year. Hope that helps extend your tiny system. 😊
Check out Cabin Obsession septic tank treatment. It's affordable and offers protection for about $2 per month by flushing a packet. It is all natural with billions of bacteria inside that break everything down to keep things flowing. We have a similar setup like the one in this video and haven't had any problems.

@@GrabLifeByDaPoosy. Wrong! No one needs to add any chemicals or enzymes to a septic system. Every time you use the toilet you are adding the natural e-coli from your body. By adding a chemical or enzyme you over accelerate the active digestive system adding too many suspended particles throughout the tank which then leaves the system to the drain field coating the leach line walls causing a failure.
I spent 25 years working for a division of a large construction company that handled mostly water and wastewater plant work. We built new, did additions, and renovation. Every time a tank was taken out of service and put back in service there was talk of grabbing a bucket of sludge from another plant to "seed" the biomass in the new system. To my knowledge it never happened. Put food (poop) in water and the bacteria will appear. it is magic!
Your septic tank diagram is suspect. The inlet to the tank should always be higher than the outlet to the tank. That way it prevents backflow from the drain field. You don't want the inlet level with the outlet.
I agree and I could have made a larger elevation difference when I installed the flange adapters. I believe I talked about this in the video. However, the tanks are all installed on a slope so there is quite a bit of elevation between the influent and the effluent. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! Barry

Most states allow dumping grey water ie washing machines and kitchen sink to be dumped on the ground.
Chris You are probably correct. We don’t have a washer in the cabin. I did elect to run the kitchen sink and the bathroom vanity into the septic system. The shower, probably our biggest water user, drains on the ground. Fingers crossed, the system works! Barry

Down turn tees instead of the baffles?
A couple of folks have brought that up. To me the goal is to prevent the incoming surge of water from a toilet flush from breaking up the scum blanket floating on top of the liquid. Baffles, tees, 90 with a vent, all do the same thing. My baffles cost a let less than Tees😏

When I put the septic and leach field in at my house , a plumber suggested that I flush a bag of dog food , while I was still building our home . This was to get the biology started ahead of us moving in . Adding yeast weekly , like a couple old bread slices or in my case I always have some sort of a beer and wine fermenting and the dregs serve as septic maintenance, can't put too much because live yeast loves to eat dead yeast , perfect example of we are what we eat. . I dream about capturing the methane that's generated then using it to heat an antifreeze of some sort , that's then.pumped through shallow pipe like radiant floor heat system ,but under the driveway instead . Sure would be nice to not have to mess with snow for a change . 🤔 can't see why it wouldn't work , time and money mostly.
WHPH When I had a real job and built/upgraded/ expanded sewer plants there was always talk of grabbing a bucket of sludge from another plant to “seed” the new system. But honestly I don’t remember it ever being done. But it sounds like we live in totally different climates so that may make a difference. Lots of plants burn methane to heat the sludge to hasten the process. Collecting, purifying, and storing the sewer gases is a very complicated endeavor. I researched just how much methane is produced by a single household but have had no success. Thanks for watching and commenting! Barry
Nice job, same as my root cellar/ storm shelter

The inlet is just a san-T with a CO on top, or a 90 turned down. Deflector sheeld on outlet so no solids go out.
Keith Not sure what your intention is with this comment. My inlet is not a tee, just a plastic baffle.
@@barrylukebuilds7894 I was a plumber for over 35 years, I hope floaters don't plug you up. Sanitary tee with a short pup piece is standard practice on inlet of a septic tank. You got sinkers an floaters so outlet like 3 inches lower than inlet with a baffle, but the inlet is 6 inches so 3 inches is below the standing waste level. Throw in some yeast to get it going good. Power lime good also. Good luck.
Thanks Keith!
