A extreme way for a young man to pass. Donny Schmit, in the young prime of his life, after winning a world championship, diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia, passed away 2 weeks later. But what matters the most, how he died, or how he lived? He is in heaven, and bush is not.
Back when the pro pits looked just like amateur pits. No semi trucks. Just a box truck and a pop-up canopy. You could walk right up to any pro you saw and start a conversation. They would even give you a souvenir if you were really nice.
Honda was ahead of the game. You could take most pro riders and put them on any brand of bikes these days and they will run consistent. Back then it had a lot to do with the engineering.
The Yamaha rider who got hurt which opened a factory door for Stanton,-was that rider Eddy Hicks by chance? I never found out what happened to Eddy Hicks.
Dymond (sp) and O'Mara got dissed by Honda. But Bayle stuffed it to Honda in retaliation. He is the only racer I know of who tried to help another manufacture's racer, (Bradshaw, on a Yamaha) win against Stanton, (who was also employed by Honda), for the championship. Bayle then retired, (after a spectacular year the year before), and became a loser in Europe's road racing.
I remember coming home from millville in the 80's as a kid and hearing the bikes as i tried to sleep. Somehow I still have good hearing. Epic days.

Natural tracks and great racing was so much better than the man made outdoor Supercross style crap and boring 4strokes today.
Truth.
Donnie Schmidt had the biggest heart in motocross. Just look at him flat-out fly around this course.

Wasn't Brad Lackey one of the first rider to use upside down forks? I think they were Simon forks.
