this was an absolute masterpiece, and the first time i've had legitimate chills watching a pokemon cutscene. if there was ever a case for why exactly they should lean into voice acted characters, this is the smoking gun.
I think the reason they don't do it is because they would have to do it in like 8 languages, easy fix would be to just have full voice acting in English and Japanese that is toggled separately from text language imo.
If Gamefreak ever gets with the times and actually gets voice actors for the game, they better hire you, especially because of the work you put into demonstrating the weight and emotion some voice acting could've added to those scenes!
While I imagined kieran’s voice sounding much different, the editing is top tier please keep doing this I love the video, and would watch a treasure of area zero cutscene movie
Tbh me too. Maybe because Kieran looks a bit feminine and childlike. So I imagine a female va voicing him. But love love love the editing and tone set in this video ❤
The higher pitched rapsy voice he gave Kirean in the final scene was close to what I kinda imagined he'd sound like, but yeah for the other scenes I do feel it was a bit "Too" deep.
@TheGLEGaming Yeah, the thing is Kieran is around 14 years of age. So it's possible that he could have a deep voice. I think he is going through puberty. 😂
I ABSOLUTELY love Kieran, he's not the best character in Paldea, he's the best character in Pokémon, with Zinnia close behind. I'm so glad you did him justice. That scream, I felt the strength of it even without voice acting, but I'm happy I actually got to hear it here. I'm not sure about the music choice for that first scene though. If Kieran were possessed sure, but he's just a kid with broken dreams, broken self-esteem, and a broken sense of trust in others (and it's our fault), and he just wants to prove to himself and others that he matters. I would have picked a more tense music but not creepy, with a slight touch of melancholy, as we're preparing for a tough battle, not just to win and remove Kieran's bad influence on the League Club, but also to save him from himself. (Though it didn't work because even if it had to be done, getting beat up once more by the source of a lot of his problems, our character, wasn't gonna magically heal his pain and frustration, on the contrary) If I should give any criticism about the voice acting, maybe put a more sharpness in his tone (I don't know if it's a good word to explain it). He's not just sad and upset, he's angry and frustrated at the player, and I think it should be heard in his tone of voice. 8:22 Also dang the tone of voice is perfect for Carmine. She's so unlikeable. Oh you didn't add the scene of Kieran joining you to battle Terapagos. I love that scene because of the scream. The scream in the Champion battle express his pain, anger and frustration, but the scream when he joins us sets those feelings free as he moves on from them, and I would have loved to see how you voice acted the difference between these two screams.
I always thought the cutscenes of the Pokémon games were so boring because of the lack of voice acting and cinematic value... but after watching your video, I realised I WAS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!! I get the technical limitations of the games up until the 3DS era, but it's time the higher-ups over there listen and let the devs bring these games to the next level and evolve (pun intended). Amazingly well done! I had chills and finally connected with the characters. You showed Kieran is actually a good kid who tries really hard to find his identity, instead of the mute anime cardboard cutout they presented me when I played through the DLC for the first time, giving me nothing but the "I'm 14, and this is deep" trope.
See, I’m confused here, because while I agree the past several Pokémon games have been rushed to hell, and the lack of voice acting and cinematic value in the cutscenes does take away from the execution of the story, I don’t see how that takes away from the writing itself…? Like, the performances and editing here definitely add to it, but I think the writing and characters were great in SV, and everything about Kieran was conveyed to you just fine through the dialogue and his facial expressions. Obviously the games do still need voice acting and proper polish, but Bonstevawich never would’ve extrapolated how to play Kieran properly if the writing wasn’t already solid for him to work off of. He even says this himself in the video. He’s still the same character here. He just has a good voice acting performance on top of what was already there. Like, if Chairman Rose from SwSh got a cool voice for instance, he’d still be a badly-written character. He’d just have a good performance slapped on top of his dumb motivations.
@@komarunaegi7460I think not having things like the voice acting and cinematic hurts the impact of the writing and makes it difficult to be attached to it. Especially in this game when it seems like the characters should be talking, but they don’t so it makes the whole scene so awkward that you pay attention to that instead of the writing bc of the distractions ruining the moment
@ Still have to disagree personally. Like, I can agree the lack of voice acting makes cutscenes like Piers singing or Kieran talking look bad, but that doesn’t take away from the way they’re written. They’re still good characters. It’s why I said if you give a bad character like Chairman Rose a cool, fitting voice, he’s still a bad character. He’s still the same guy that wanted to end the world just because he couldn’t wait an extra day for Leon to help him with his energy crisis problem. Look at it this way. It’s not like books or older games ever had any voice acting. It was all text. And for older games, it was all text + visuals. People are still clearly able to judge a story or a cast of characters for what they are even if they don’t have a voice or any cinematography attached to them. Look at how the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games or games like Undertale and Deltarune are so beloved for instance. No voice acting, all sprites, constant dialogue, no cinematography outside of some basic sprite animations.
@ I’m not saying without it the good writing is nonexistent. It’s just with games evolving over time standards change too. And thus it becomes harder to appreciate these things if basic standards aren’t met. Standards weren’t as high back then as it is now. It becomes distracting and more difficult when Pokémon doesn’t reach those standards. Especially again this games acts like there should be voice but it’s not. It seems like something it isn’t causing awkwardness and distraction. Writing’s there, but harder to properly appreciate it bc of execution
@@regulusking4299 See, I want to agree with you, but plenty of story-heavy games still come out today with barely any or zero voice acting. It’s why I brought up Undertale and Deltarune as the poster children from this, along with the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games. Visual novels like Ace Attorney also don’t really dabble with voice acting outside of a few short sound bites, even when they went 3D. Whether a game needs voice acting or not really depends on the game. The main series Pokémon *chose* to go all out by making these elaborate cinematic cutscenes with the characters’ mouths moving, so it’s on them for taking that conscious choice for designing their games in a way that necessitated voice acting. Without those cutscenes, or if they stuck to sprites or a chibi art style, I don’t think people would be demanding for voice acting nearly as much imo. But I still agree Pokémon needs it regardless. Also: the only reason I kind of assumed you were saying that no voice acting takes away from the writing is because the original commenter sort of implied that in a way, by saying Kieran was just a mute anime cardboard cutout trying to sound deeper than he really is. Like, his arc is literally the same, with or without voice acting. I can read a book and still get the same emotional gist of a character’s arc. A person narrating it and turning it into an audio book isn’t going to change that.
Omg... that kieran voice in scene one... You voiced it in Cliffe's Indigo disck video?!?! I wondered who did that 'cause it was such a great scene with the voice acting, and it turns out it was you!
