I'm a graphic designer and let me tell you.. you ALREADY have a great eye for design!! The technical stuff you can learn with UA-cam - it's not easy, but it's possible! (Edit: I have a degree but know many designers who are self-taught!)

@@Grizzlyneon but it's SO much faster when u have a person you can ask immediately. i studied architecture and learning to use autocad was a steep learning curve - i took a week long class, which of course helped, but having an older student by my side to help me with all the tips and shortcuts was incomparably more useful. same goes for when i was learning to use ps, ai, id etc.

Damon, you keep me motivated to keep going through life. I'm at an anguished age of it, where I'm young enough to not face any huge consequences for inactivity, but because of that I got NOTHING. No car, money, job, or school. Before I started watching your channel I thought I'd just be miserable, but now, I'm expanding my hobbies, hoping to meet new people, and writing and drawing a visual narrative to upload to UA-cam in hopes to inspire at least one person. In my opinion, the BEST thing I have ever done in my education is make every assignment work to my benefit. Meaning - work to become something that is relevant to my life and practice and can help me grow in ways that directly relate to what I am doing in the world.. @@reallifefairy I had a design professor who told us that as we research a topic we really don't care about, we have to find something that connects with us, which then helps us find a way to add in our interests/personalities. Obviously in a design context, but I think that advice can be applied to other areas (basically good research is key)

you inspire me so much to never stop learning!! i’ve always had an interest in learning graphic design, and taking drum lessons, and learning languages. i just graduated from my bachelors and now i’m reminded to be excited for learning other things unrelated to my career!
When you take a course in a group there will always be curriculum that you feel is irrelevant to your specific goals in that moment. But same as everything, the random things you learn today can ignite unexpected ideas in the future.

L’invitation au voyage is one of my faves. I memorized it in French when I was learning the language. I would sneak into Buttes Chaumont during confinement because I lived on the corner and would run around the park reciting it to myself to distract myself from the boredom and pain of running and the world being on hold.
You mentioned needing a graphic design coach of sorts, the digital space has workshops to learn adobe softwares like illustrator and photoshop etc. They're super helpful! There's also critical forum thursday evenings, lectures which help a ton listening to other people's work so that's good for inspo! This collage style you showed reminds me of David carson!

This course seems great to start with graphic design, maybe not ifor you but in generell. It reminded me of some classes i needed to take in my first year. They are a lot more about the visual eye than technical skills, but those are things you need as a basis.
Damon take it from this American expat in Paris and everywhere from loooong before you arrived...ya gotta get the granny grocery bag with wheels...save yourself a TON of pain..and future spine problems..your spine is priceless and so are you...15 euros pays for itself a million times over and or something with wheels!!
Graphic designer here. You really should check HSE school of design (art direction, design courses), as they allow to work on your own projects while studying. I've compared different countries (courses and degrees) and this one is one of the best! And your editing is so great!! well as always!
As a born and bred Londoner this totally resonated - and one of the reasons I live in the French countryside now. I was back in London last week and I had your exact rush hour cross town tube vs bus dilemma plus the ensuing belongings explosion on the bus floor with my multiple, multiple bags. Feeling your pain there! Also my thought on arriving was... I've just spent my ENTIRE weekend budget in Pret on coffee and a soup! London is ridiculously expensive now.
This video is sooo nostalgic for me! I went to design school in Toronto and everything is the same! Same long crowded commute, same experimental projects, same white walls and concrete floors that make misplaced furniture look like art 🤣!

I went to LCC for my graphic design degree and also found it quite frustrating that it was all very theoretical and conceptual, and I literally had to teach myself how to actually use the digital creative tools.

You'll honestly learn the most about design outside of your course as you explore the field and do projects. School is more foundational, theory, history, and applying it quite basically. The practical and technical is stronger afterwards. That's been my experience anyway. Happy to share more!
