Ryan, next time, when people are monologuing, its just that, monologuing. You don't need to fact check every word. Focus on important details. You're here to fact check the general, not the host. So focus on that. The rest is just junk data. It bloats the video and bores the viewer.

It is important to recognise that Tucker Carlson is not even trying to be correct. He has an agenda and he will push it no matter what lies it takes. I have no idea if the Coronel here is doing the same or is just incompetent. Ultimately, he is saying what Tucker wants so his competence doesn't matter at all anyway.

I absolutely love that “The truth has a ceiling, but the sky is the limit for lies.” I’m definitely gonna use that. I’ve just come back from a weekend long garden party in the Cotswolds UK, most of the people there were folks who have been too some of the best schools and universities in the UK and abroad, and although the alcohol was flowing amongst other substances, it absolutely blew my mind how many well educated people I’d previously considered smart and tuned in, were spreading the most outrageous conspiracy theories I’d ever heard as though they were established facts. Carlson had been tapping into a growing legitimate, widely held line of anti-establishment views; with Trump, it seemed he began to only care about relentlessly building his brand, maybe becoming another Rush Limbaugh. However, he went far out with the stolen election stuff that, my opinion, he could not have actually believed. Then his brand-building, er, anti-establishment senses had him opposing the one thing he might have supported about the Biden Administration; i.e., aid to Ukraine. He actually said he is rooting for Russia, of all things, completely destroying any credibility. Tucker's base believes everything about the Biden Administration has to be wrong, and he's pandering to that base. He is obviously not stupid, but I don't think he has any actual beliefs.

There is no proof that Azov batallion members taken prisoner were neo-nazis, and there's no proof that their prison was hit by HIMARS. What was shown as proof is a few pieces of debris which may have been easily transported from a site of another HIMARS strike.
There is no evidence that there were multiple missiles hitting Olenivka compound, yet Ukrainians don't have HIMARS missiles that can cause such destruction when fired solo as opposed to being fired in a volley.
Lastly, holding POWs in a prison that's in the range of 40 km from the frontline is against the Geneva conventions under which the combatant POWs should be kept in a safe location.

Originally the Finnish army was planning to berry the dead soldiers near the battlefield during the Winter War (1939-1940). However, several Finnish women went near the front to collect those dead soldiers, who were their relatives or friends. So the army quickly changed it's process and transferred the corps to that area, where the soldier had lived. So his relaives could identify the corps and get the certainty, that this person was really dead. Naturally it was a bad message, but a negative certainty is still better than a long continuing uncertainty. Both in WW1 and WW2 a lot of American soldiers died in Europe. Almost all of them were berried in Europe and their relatives didn't have a chance to see the dead soldiers. Then although the relatives got a formal verification, that this soldier had really died, many of them didn't believe that information. Perhaps there had been some error in the names, perhaps this man is only captured and he will come back sometime in the future. This false hope made the future life more difficult compared to the case, when one really knew, that this soldier will certainly not come back. The false hope must be killed, before the sorrow job will begin. And only after the sorrow job has been finished, one can continue the life normally.

I think you are being kind to this retired army colonel. When I served as a conscript NCO in the Dutch army, a colonel was the highest rank any officer could reach without extra army university education. To be a general you needed to get an army university degree. To be a higher echelon general (up to 4 star) you even needed to go to a specially dedicated top education program specially for generals (by invitation) before leading armies. This colonel clearly has not had that privilege. A colonel is usually in command of a regiment sized army unit. He carries out what top brass order him to do without much influence as to what that should be. Also as Ryan points out the man is almost eighty years out. The cat really comes out of the bag when he points out the "fact" that Russia is trying to become the last European, full blown christian state without being flooded by "foreigners" and that's why "everybody" is against Russia. I would rather prefer to hear Gen Petraeus's opinion on this matter (which I have) than this relic from the pasts brain fart's. Also the fact he is a guest in Tucker Carlson's show does not bode well for the informational value of what he has to say.

The word which comes most to mind to describe Colonel Macgregor is: disinformation. The key difference between misinformatiom and disinformation is that one arises ouf of ignorance whereas the other is deliberate and calculated.
Macgregor is no idiot, but neither do I think he is ignorant in the message he is spreading. In Australia that kind of messaging actually has a name: it's called "white-anting", where "white ants" is Australian slang for termites.
That is to say, the point of a whiting-anting campaign is to undermine a thing or concept until it collapses of its own accord.
Expressed in plainer language, what Macgregor seems to be doing is acting like a Russian asset, spreading a mixture of truths, half-truths, and outright fabrications which, by coinicdence or otherwise, would help weaken Western resolve in their support for Ukraine, and thereby increase Russian chances of prevailing in its war against Ukraine.
I say that because Tucker Carlson is by no means the only social media channel Macgregor has been on spreading that same message. Nor is he the only Russian asset who is out there making the grounds with that same kind of message. Scott Ritter is another; but Ritter at least openly admits he supports the Russian side of the war in Ukraine. (He did so on Twitter back in early February of this year: google "Russia is Atticus Finch" to see those admissions for yourself.)

So that includes someone like me whose record fell between 'readily deployable' and 'civilian' and then got rejected because I've young children and couldn't really sign for 12 months minimum.
That was before I knew how chill Ukraine went on western resignations (and even desertions) of course. I thought that if I touched that pen and did anything else for the next year it'd be a firing squad. 😆
As you can imagine, alledging Russia killed someone who's in a western European country, through a missile strike in Ukraine, is rather amusing.
Apparently (and this involves some Reddit hearsay) if you filled out that online application at all, you've been killed twice, executed and then swapped alive in a prison exchange. How Russia Uses Retired US Colonel’s Ukraine Misinformation for Domestic Propaganda
      February 21, 2023
      Leonid Martynyuk
On February 15, Russia’s RIA Novosti state news agency quoted retired U.S. Colonel Douglas Macgregor’s interview with the “Judge Napolitano - Judging Freedom” program, streamed on UA-cam that same day.
The Russian translation of Macgregor’s claim isn’t precise but represents his ideas accurately:
"We just don't have ammunition to send. We have reached the limit; our own reserves are rapidly coming to an end."
This statement is misleading and fits into the Kremlin’s anti-U.S. and anti-Ukraine propaganda targeting Russia’s domestic audiences

    • @stonequest7
      @stonequest7 3 місяці тому

      Russian use of Macgregor’s misinformation
On December 15, 2021, when the United States was warning about an imminent Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Kremlin was denying any such plans, RIA Novosti reported it was unlikely that the Ukrainian army could withstand a Russian military invasion for more than three to four days. The agency quoted an article in The National Interest written by Macgregor and former CIA officer George Beebe:
“Under these circumstances, it is not unreasonable to assume that Russian ground forces would reach their operational objectives along the Dnieper River in as little as seventy-two to ninety-six hours.”
The colonel noted that the Russian side is trying to act as carefully as possible and minimize damage, unlike, in particular, the US army in Iraq. He also expressed the opinion that the defeat of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is inevitable, and President Zelensky is trying to delay it by any means.”
That claim was also false. Ukrainian and international authorities, including the United Nations, reported mass atrocities against Ukrainian civilians allegedly committed by the Russian troops, some of which potentially constitute war crimes

Second thing Russia actually has more that 300К soldiers in reserve And I am one of them and no I am not doing tiktoks I just live my life. In case they declared general mobilization it would be a matter of 24 hours to get that 300k ready for battle. I wasn’t called up when the war started and neither of my friends were. One thing to add to the hawaii vs ukraine segment.
That's not how US budgeting works full stop.
If support for Ukraine would stop tomorrow, not a single cent of the military budget would flow into domestic buckets.
It's been congressionally approved for use in the military, it will stay there and go to some other military related project.
Ukraine is currently the easiest W for the US military, all the "anti soviet equipment" gear finally gets used for what it was designed and no US boots have to touch Ukrainian soil.
The alternative would be to let all that equipment rust and rot in storage where it has to be replaced eventually anyways.
Helping Ukraine with equipment is by far the biggest bang for the buck the US could hope for and Putin has practically begged for it.
To summarize, whoever brings up "should spend the money in the US" fundamentally doesn't understand how budgeting works.

Yea, but the bottom line is that Ukraine is being helped a lot more than the Hawaiians are, regardless of reasoning. Actions are still to be held accountable , if we take our legal system for example. The left-hand might not know what the right hand is doing but it all flows flow from the same source ( taxpayers, right?).
I couldn't tell you what a fair amount would be to either side. But there's a bigger point here than getting caught up in semantics.

    • @TheLumberjack1987
      @TheLumberjack1987 9 місяців тому +1

@@meissnerflux this is not semantics at all, budgeting is a gigantic core task of the government.
If you want less money to go to the military and more to domestic affairs then contact your congress person, they can argue for that once per year.
But that will still not change what the Department of Defense wants to prioritize.
The DoD might still prioritize sending equipment to Ukraine, no matter if their budget is cut by 5% or not.
That's why Hawaii and Ukraine are fundamentally separate issues and again if you don't get that, then you are one of the people who simply don't know how budgeting and the government as a whole works.

@herehere3139 If you consider this as "facts", it's a good example of the problem. It doesn't take into account the fact that our medias are just as biased as russian ones.
Some of it isn't wrong, but a lot of this is a fairly big bunch of opinions that don't take the field into account ands goes against first-hand reporting (e.g. the ukrainians "leveling up just as fast"; this doesn't mean much when ukrainians are far less likely to survive because of russian artillery and landmines, and this is a fairly big problem according to reportings you can get from ukrainian medias. Or The fact that there isn't U.S mercenaries; at the very least we know that there are polish ones, so U.S ones wouldn't be surprising neither).
The very beginning of the video invents a fallacy where there is none, and, once again, it goes against reporting we have from the field. And it goes against things Bryan SHOULD know. Russia hasn't taken Kiev because the goal wasn't to take Kiev. No army would try to take a city like Kiev with an army as small as the one russia used in the first place; the goal was to intimidate the government because russia mistakenly thought, probably because of flawed information from their intelligence, that would have more support in Kiev than they actually had, and thought that it would be enough to intimidate the governement. Moreover, due to their demography, Russia can't afford to do their WW2 stitch anymore even if it takes more time. Bad start.
Regarding ukraine's "technological advantage" with the javelin, and russia has no equivalent, this is false as well. And reducing, say, an HIMARS accuracy is a fairly big deal with this accuracy is the main advantage of the HIMARS. Not to mention that this hardly counts as an advantage given the few number they have.
The 400 000 is very likely. An ukrainian operator, Kyivstar, posted a video specifically thanking their soldiers and saying "400 000 heroes will never answer the phone anymore" in a video they removed afterward. It doesn't mean that it is absolutely certain, but the number most certainly doesn't come "out of nowhere" , and most certainly not from russia since it looks like it is circulating in ukraine as well, and the conflict is widely recognized as being a massacre. And McGregor certainly has sources that aren't available to Bryan. And the number of people who got hurt doesn't take into account that 1/ people can be hurt multiple times 2/ I don't know the last numbers, but ukraine has been at least in its 10th mobilization for a while now.
At the beginning of the year, the estimates were already over 300000 casualty (for all sides) so 400 000 il probably closer to the truth than the opposite. Also, various organizations on both sides counted the dead all accross the countries and once again, we are closer to 300 000/400 000 than 100 000, with ukrainians having more death despite russians being on the offensive at the beginning ; if they lost that many men there would be almost no resistance anymore for ukraine anymore anyway, and their lack of progress is a sign that no, the russian army hasn't lost that many men, not enough for them to have a notable disadvantage at the very least.
Regarding the troops left in russia, both are right. Russia is leaving a ton of its troops in russia because, since the beginning, hence the attack on kiev with a small army, the feared that we might intervene. But they also rotate them frequently, so Brayn is right regarding that. Except that we, at least in europe (even if we usually are less objectively informed than the US which is less biased overall, by far, at this point we reached russian level regarding propaganda), saw reports on said rotations with the soldiers going back in russia and being replaced just to return on the battlefield later.
Other times, he just repeat exactly what McGregor said while making it looks like he adds something (the bradley example; yes, you're essentially saying the same things).
The javelin example is actually McGregor mixing up two things, since these - has - been reports of javelins on sale on the darknet, (whether the sale occured is another problem) but this is unrelated to the mexico event. Not to mention that the problem of arms trafficking has been confirmed by kiev itself, which doesn't fight against its own corruption from the inside just for fun. They're attempting to clean it up, apparently.
Regarding the "algorithm" part, the only thing that I noticed is that Bryan doesn't know what an algorithm is or how AIs work. Reality is a tad more complicated than what he makes it look like, particularly regarding targeting. We're still far away from this.
Regarding the "there is a lot of muslims in russia", it is once again Bryan not understanding what McGregor said, which is basically "the country still has a strong national identity".Off-topic. Yes, there are non-catholics in russia, but russia still is a traditionalist country that doesn't have europe's open borders.
Etc. There is a lot to say. It is interesting but definitely not "100% factual" .

    Great analysis as always Ryan.
A few things occur to me about this whole Ukraine v Russia war.
Russia is now tapping China and N. Korea for equipment and munitions THEY sold to them over the years. Several reports about that out there. If their production was sufficient, they wouldn't be doing this. Oh, they have production capability, but evidently it isn't enough.
This also depletes the equipment reserves of both China and N. Korea. The former has the industrial base to replace this stuff, and honestly has developed more modern weapons and munitions than what they are selling back to Russia (for the most part). Note - this is old stuff we are talking about.
OTOH, this conflict is also depleting OUR stockpiles and that of NATO. But, on both sides, these are mostly dated systems and munitions which will be replaced by more modern versions. The issue I see is that we really need to ramp up production in the US - we were already playing from a weakened supply stockage due to 20 years of war. Some would say that this is a payoff to the Defense industry (e.g. follow the money). I'm not one of those - it will however, upgrade our war stockage with more modern systems and bullets. Could be some "strategery" happening here.
Russia hasn't been able to field newer tanks and APCs in any numbers in this - they don't have them. They also seem to have kept upgrades to existing ground systems minimal. No flies on their aircraft, but their ground stuff still lags woefully behind (fortunately).
Material weapons aside - Ukraine seems to have adopted a more western approach to command and control. They seem more flexible and adaptive than the Russians who are sticking with more WWII/Cold War approaches - at least in the early months. Decisions, tactical decisions, require higher approval in the Russian military. Hell, the Infantry couldn't talk directly to the Artillery on a radio until the mid to late 80s. Same with Armor. It seems they have kept some of those limitations.
Lastly, Russia has an almost non-existent (read professional) NCO Corps. This has always been a weakness for them, and it continues today. Even China sees this as an issue and has been trying to build an NCO Corps for several years now. Russia's military structure is far too rigid compared to NATO, and especially the US. There is little room for initiative, and indeed initiative might be punished. It's the WWII concept of throwing bodies against the wall and hoping that the other sides attrition is higher than yours. There are exceptions for certain units to this, but they are few.

I think the "depleting NATO's stockpiles" argument is an inherently flawed one.
Early in the war, the stockpiles that were tapped were either very low-complexity items (small arms and ammo primarily, MANPADS and ATGMs on the high end) or they were old Soviet standard hardware. The former is easy to replenish, the latter ought to be replaced anyway to further NATO interoperability and all that. Focus then shifted to artillery as lines solidified and it became a more positional war. And yes, the war has proven to be a huge drain on NATO's artillery assets. But fixating on that is missing the forests for the trees.
NATO doctrine calls for establishing air superiority and delivering ludicrous levels of firepower through air power. While artillery has a role in NATO doctrine, it's a primarily supporting role. NATO doesn't get stuck into positional warfare with artillery duels. That's happening in Ukraine because neither side can establish air superiority. And neither side can establish air superiority because neither side developed that expertise. That's yet another Soviet artifact; the Soviets knew they couldn't compete with NATO in the air, so they focused on trying to establish air defense networks that could control the skies. NATO responded by developing SEAD doctrines to counter that. NATO air power was and remains functionally unstoppable. That we're seeing S400 systems (presumably) lost to drones now is further evidence of just how tenuous the reliance on air defense has become.
What we're actually seeing is a very small portion of NATO's procurement budget, often from over a decade ago but not necessarily only old stuff, being portioned off and sent to Ukraine. This does result in a degradation of NATO assets, yes. But what are these assets supposed to do? Who you ask will get you different answers, but if you cut to the quick and ask Poland, the answer's pretty immediately: the money is spent to buy hardware to fight Russians. (This is the part where I gesture broadly at the war.)
If the goal of the hardware is to thwart imperialist adventures by rival powers, it is absolutely doing its job. If you bought a tank or whatever with the intention of stopping Russia, you're getting what you wanted -- and because it's not your manpower at risk, you're getting a better deal than you initially bargained for. Things get murkier for nations who have other interests (France in Africa, for instance), but in all of those cases, an independent Ukraine is worth the investment.
The argument about stockpiles feels like propaganda.

    • @oldtop4682
      @oldtop4682 8 місяців тому

Love your point about why one keeps weapons. And yeah, this is what they are for. I also suspect that NATO countries are taking military procurement more seriously because of this. Something that was lacking in some countries for a long time.
As for stockpiles, we were already trying to restock before Ukraine v Russia started up. Lots of testimony to Congress about this and lots of money to the defense industry was already flowing. Thing is, much of what we are producing are nextgen versions which needed to happen anyway. This isn't a bad thing, but the more sophisticated the weapon, the longer it takes to produce. There's a balance. I'm not sure we are IN balance at the moment.

But what Putin constantly talked about was his fear of a nuke on a dual-use Tomahawk missile fired from let's say a NATO state like Romania or Poland (7 minutes) or Ukraine (5-6 minutes). Is there a huge difference between 6 and15 minutes? You decide. Putin seems to think so. Just like in the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, when the US took the threat of Soviet nukes in Cuba very seriously. We didn't say, hey it doesn't matter that subs could still hit DC. And that is a major factor for Putin in why he launched this war.
