Interscapular pain is localized discomfort or pain between the scapulae or shoulder blades. It is experienced in the area laterally between the shoulder blades and is a common symptom of many musculoskeletal disorders. Interscapular pain can be caused by a variety of factors, both medical and non-medical.
Some common non-medical causes of interscapular pain include poor posture, excessive strain on the muscles, overuse of the shoulder muscles, and poor physical fitness. It can also be caused by a herniated disc and spinal joint misalignment.
Medical causes of interscapular pain range from spinal issues, such as fractures, herniated discs, spinal stenosis, and degenerative disc disease, to muscle issues, such as muscle strain, rotator cuff tears, myofascial pain syndrome, and fibromyalgia. Other medical causes of interscapular pain can include costochondritis, hepatitis, shingles, mesenteric ischemic syndrome, gallstones, kidney stones, or pancreatitis.
