Gas Bubble Formation (Cavitation): One of the most common explanations for joint noise is the formation and collapse of gas bubbles within the synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints. When a joint is stretched or manipulated, the pressure within the joint changes. This can cause gases (such as nitrogen) dissolved in the synovial fluid to form bubbles. When these bubbles collapse or burst, they produce a popping or cracking sound.
Ligament or Tendon Snapping: The movement of tendons or ligaments over bony structures can also cause joint noise. This snapping or popping sound occurs when the soft tissues move across irregular surfaces or when they return to their normal position after being temporarily displaced.
Age-Related Changes: As people age, the cartilage in their joints may undergo wear and tear. This can lead to changes in the joint surfaces and contribute to joint noise. Age-related changes may include the development of osteoarthritis, where the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in the joint deteriorates over time.
Air Bubbles in the Joint: In some cases, the noise may be caused by the movement of air within the joint. This can happen during certain activities, such as cracking your knuckles, where you intentionally create a change in pressure within the joint, causing the release of air.
Synovial Fluid Viscosity: Changes in the viscosity of the synovial fluid can also contribute to joint noise. The viscosity of the fluid can affect how easily the joint surfaces glide against each other.

Very useful information.
