This is my attempt to convert a train set into a train layout in one day. In fact in just a few hours. I will also add hillocks, a pond and lights but if I wasn’t to add these, or jump power from one loop to another, I think I could half the build time. Jump to the end of the video to see how long it took me. I built it outdoors as this speeded up the drying time for the glue. I am not aiming to be prototypical here. The aim is to build a fun layout, to show people they can build something for their kids.

The idea is that this layout can be stored under a single bed (with 4 inches clearance) as it is 6x3ft. It is made up of radius 1 and radius 2 curves. Hornby set track. Hornby regular controller. A link wire jumps power from the inner loop to the outer one, and runs the trains in the opposite direction. Reversing the link wire, reverses the directions, so both trains could run the same way. Also at a later date another controller may be added so each loop can operate independently. Light weight layout this is weighing 9lbs, being made on 25mm insulation foam board (from places like B&Q). Easy to pull out from under a single bed for example, or lent against a wall (you can pin things on the underside). If you added a wooden backscene board it would look even nicer, especially if a photographic backscene.
Some of the items are a bit different. I think the Coaling Stage might be American, and so might the Signal Box but I made this out of spare parts I have lying around.
Makes 2018 Channel 5 TVs 'Great Model Railway Challenge' seem quite possible.
