i'm giving away $400 worth of books to FIVE of you!!! all you need to do is download Karma, make a wish-list of the top 3 books you want to read, and comment them down below!! make sure you tag your instagram handle and follow me on IG (@jackbenedwards) as I'll be DMing the winners from my account!! note: the DM will come from my verified account and that account only :)
note: giveaway is international!! i've noticed that some of you have mentioned that your comments are being deleted. youtube is probably accidentally filtering them as spam, which means i have to approve them behind the scenes! i'll approve them all, so they'll all count -- don't worry! hope this helps :)

I've never really understood the saying 'Don't judge a book by its cover.' That's literally what cover designs are for.

    • @talkofthestage6053
      @talkofthestage6053 3 роки тому +45

The saying was coined or at least is best attributed to Martin Luther King during the Civil Rights Movement when black people were fighting racial segregation and discrimination in the US. Dr King’s plea to the racist white folk was to judge a person by the content of their character and not to judge a book by its cover (I.e. not judge a person by their skin colour). I don’t think this saying was ever seriously intended to apply to actual books in the way that Jack has in this light-hearted and comedic video.

    • @sin3358

The description is more important ofc but the cover has a huge influence in whether or not you'll even pay attention to a book. So far, there are two reasons why I wanted to read a book: 1. It was recommended to me 2. The cover was whispering to me

Have you tried listening to audiobooks and reading something you really wanted to try for a while at the same time? I feel like when my attention wanders about, listening to the audiobook while also reading the book myself kinda helps. It helps to set up an ambiance that is less likely to make one want to watch/listen to something else. You can also try breaking the slump by rereading something you've really enjoyed in the past or reading somewhere with no access to the internet :D

"This is How you Lose The Time War" definitely has a really great second act, but for me I also enjoyed the first half! The letters were witty and some of the settings were so cool, like an ancient bone temple, a dying plant, and an abandoned hospital in the middle of the woods. If you are a fan of sci-fi I think these settings make the first half more appealing! It also contains cute pop-culture references. This book made me laugh and cry, I highly recommend especially if you enjoy time travel/romance/poetry!
My favorite quote from the book: "Flowers grow far away on a planet they'll call Cephalus, and these flowers bloom once a century, when the living star and its black-hole binary enter conjunction. I want to fix you a bouquet of them, gathered across eight hundred thousand years, so you can draw our whole engagement in a single breath, all the ages we've shaped together."

Yeah, I fell for that trick. A few years ago I read in the back of a book that the writer was the new Jane Austen and I love Jane Austen, so I thought I'd read it. The book was Julia Quinn's Bridgerton. Need I say I was utterly disappointed 😒 not to mention mislead.

Can I just say you're so good at sponsorship integrations? Like I love that you always come up with such an interesting and natural way to blend the sponsor into a video - and as a result, of all the UA-cam partnerships I've seen Karma do, this is the first time I'm seriously considering downloading it? Like what a cool idea to narrow down your to-buy pile!

these covers are gorgeousss. i maaay have decided to read This is how you lose a time war also in great part bc of that cover too.
I'd say tho, i'd seen people talking abt how it's a weird read at the beginning so i went for audiobook to help with the pacing and let me tell you, stunning. the narrators are amazing, and bc its a very poetic book, it was incredible to hear it out loud. i loved ittt

Jack you've inspired me to read so much more that I just finished 8 books in 3 days and started the 9th. This is the most I've ever read in so little time.
I read Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982, We were liars, They both die at the end AND One of us is lying just like you recommended. They were great reads but my favourites are definitely Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982 and One of us is lying.

I actually liked that this is how you lose the time war was sort of slow! I feel like a lot of sci fi/fantasy is very fast paced and more about plot than characters, and because I read a lot of sff I think I sort of end up feeling like the destination is more important than the journey- I’m reading to finish the book, rather than to enjoy the process of reading. So this is how you lose the time war forced me to sort of slow down and focus on the character development, the writing, the little changes between chapters, rather than whatever major plot events happened.I was able to enjoy reading the book, rather than just “yay, the mystery is solved!” And I am SO excited to reread

“Things have gotten worse since we last spoke“ was my first book of 2022 and it was certainly something to start off a year with. I also read it in one sitting and was just sat staring at a wall for a while afterwards. A 10/10 for me tbh

Hi jack! Something I kind of noticed like when you were talking about the second book is that sometimes you show a book but dont read the title out loud. I would appreciate it if you read them out loud more often as sometimes I'm not always looking while listening and it's probably helpful for people hard of sight as well!

Dude I found "This is how you lose the time war" through you (in your 2021 recap) and so I knew it would pay off, and man did it. Just read it in about three days (I've nothing better to do) and as soon as it picks up about halfway, it just goes hard as fuck. Still barely comprehensible, but it ties everything together so well until the end. Such brilliant writing. It's funny how I actually highlighted the same letter, though a different passage of it: "It is difficult - it is very difficult, to befriend where you wish to consume, to find those who, when they ask "Do I have you still," when they end a letter with "Yours," mean it in any substantive way." Truly, mind-numbingly brilliant writing.
And eh, the cover is BEAUTIFUL.

The summary of a couple of these books reminds me of The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton. It has a start where you have no idea what’s going on and then lots of twists and turns and in the end you only get enough info to solve near the end. BUT it might be worth the reread. Would love your thoughts if you’ve read it.
