Mine came into today. I am a very active Ham operator. Current main HF rig FTDX101MP and it has the best receiver for a transceiver in the world. So the bar was set really really high in receiver performance , filtering and noise mitigation etc. This thing blew me away, I don’t know how they did it. It’s that darn good.
101MP was top of the Sherman report, havnt checked in a while, but if you are comparing it to the 101MP and say its good, then it is :-) Thanks and hope you enjoy it. Matt
Since you know your radios , no it's not a 101MP or a 7610 etc in horrible conditions but in normal conditions it's at least as good as a 7300.But, in SWL radios, it is in a league of its own. Like your videos and content. Keep it up, thank you!
@@TechMindsOfficial
Just ordered one from Amazon which should arrive tomorrow. Are you still enamoured with it?
Wow! That noise reduction setting is indeed impressive. Thanks as always for showing us all the cool radios, and other devices.
I have one of the original DSP 1's, the NR on the older model is equally as good as far as I've experienced. Malahit (and their knockoffs) have amazing noise reduction ability, only bettered by connecting to the PC and adding more tweaked noise reduction.
I have a non-licensed version, the Malhahit V3 and its noise reduction is also great, and so is its noise blanker. In fact, the only radio I have with a noise blanker as good as the Malahit V3 is an old Icom IC-R71A and a Yaesu FTdx- 3000. As for the noise reducion, none are as good, even the FTDx-3000.
When you pressed that noise reduction button I genuilely exclaimed 'Holy shit!'
Glad you're so easily amused. But it deosnt' have multiple NR settings and no adjustable AGC-threshold which is critical in SDRs for reducing background noise. Try using an online SDR and look at the settings and then realize how lacking this device really is
@@624radicalham both the AGC and NR are adjustable
Incorrect. There is a 30 step Noise Reduction Threshold that is variable plus AGC Modes for Fast, Medium, Slow and Long settings with AGC Gain settings from 0 to 60 dB.
I just received mine two days ago, exact same one from Deepelec! Yesterday I made a video about how to upgrade the firmware to the latest 2.40 beta that adds FT8 and RTTY decoding. I was just thinking, it would be great if Tech Minds gets his hands on this model and makes a good video covering it, as there are not many videos on UA-cam about it! Well... guess you got one then haha! Amazing SDR receiver, great build quality!
Yeh, I’m actually quite blown away by the quality of this receiver. Everything from the actual casing to the receiver’s sensitivity. Definitely a good buy!
It seems a very complex method to upgrade firmware.
@@andynew2 Well I've seen easier methods for sure, but at least it is possible and explained well enough, so it's still a good thing in my book. The thing to be really careful about is to use the correct firmware file, as it can and probably will differ from clone to clone and also different from the original Malahit from Russia.
A very fair review regarding one of the more interesting, and controversial radios to ever come out.
I received my Malahit DSP 2, software version 2.40 the other day. Here are my first impressions. The RF gain, adjustable noise reduction and color touchscreen are what make this radio shine. The noise reduction is so good you actually want to use it. You can adjust to get rid of any artifacts. Excellent filtering. Very sensitive on every band. I bought mine on Radioddity, didn't want to do the Aliexpress route. AM - nice reception, slightly above average sound. FM - the best I've ever heard, almost cried when I listened through some headphones at the warm, almost liquid sound. Airband, beautiful between the squelch and the noise reduction the band springs to life. HF bands, amazing sensitivity and sound. Red hot receive. Sometimes I felt the radio operators were in the room with me. The speaker on this radio is as nice as the cabinet it's enclosed in. Rock solid aluminum. There's even an equalizer in case you need to tweak it more to your taste. The screen is big and bright, and both the waterfall and spectrum display show no lag. I did not do a deep dive on 2 meter and 440 yet. The same for any satellite applications, which I just don't use. I used a W6LVP Magnetic loop with this radio. There are some impressive scanning capabilities with this radio too.
The Malahit has many features but the menu is broken down into six soft keys that give you amazing control over rf gain, audio, visual, noise reducton, modes and band. Much has been made of this radio's touchscreen generated noise being present on some bands, but I found this only to be the case with the supplied telescopic antenna. This radio is extremely sensitive, so using the telescopic antenna for all band activity is a huge compromise, one that most radio buffs understand. I have not had a listening situation where screen noise presented itself. Im sure if I tried I could find some extraneous noise, walking around with an ungrounded handheld radio this sensitive can present issues that no designer can totally eliminate. To be fair, this radio needs to be hooked up to a good antenna. A good loop, end fed half wave, or something similar. A radio with this sensitivity and selectivity deserves more than a five dollar telescopic antenna. You would never ask for an Icom 7300 to just be equipped with a 29 inch, seven section whip. Let's just be fair here. You probably would probably get all kinds of noises too from all top end receiver(s) similarly equipped. Andrew Barron has written a good Radio Today book on this Malahit DSP 2 that covers many of the functions not covered in the owners manual. You can find the book on Amazon.
As a longtime amateur radio guy this radio brings up so many issues. Thirty years ago most radio fans would wait until a major manufacturer like Icom, Kenwood or Yaesu would come out. The radios would be evaluated and tested by pubs like QST magazine, and the numbers supplied. Now, its the wild west. Do I want to buy a Russian radio from a clone licensed to someone in China? What's under the hood? Where's the quality control and support? Aliexpress? Banggood? The Malahit team appears to be three or four Russian developers that have created various iterations of this radio. The earlier Malahit DSP 1 seems to have been an imperfect prototype. Which brings up all kinds of questions, licensing, branding, IP. Now that we have software defined radios that are constantly upgradable, when is a radio ready to be sold? If Icom called me today and asked me for money to develop their next SDR radio, I would politely decline, right? But for a small developer like Malahit, I will support them because they're making a great radio? Sure, there are issues here. Why SMA instead of BNC? Do I not buy because of Russia invading Ukraine? Do I boycott Chinese clones because we might go to war with that country someday?
Like I said, SDR radios have turned the radio industry on its head. It's now the wild west, from development to supply chain. This radio seems to have been made by people that wanted to make a really good radio based on a continual improvement process. These radios are a work in progress, highlighting amateur radio guys at their best. All the great new features of amateur radio, from SDRs to FT8, were developed not by big companies, but by the amateur radio community. This has been the history of radio since its earliest days and one that I hope continues.
🎉 Good to read your review.
What antenna are using?
@@PureAwareness76 The best antenna is a good outside discone (Comet) for wideband coverage. For HF bands, W6LVP magnetic loop antenna.
Yeah but it’s 2024 now. What amateur radio community? Oh, the one that’s extremely niche now. Hardly surprising the entire scene and supply chain is unrecognisable.
Have just received mine .
Beautiful build quality , excellent performance and the audio is better than any of my other radios , including my NRD515 , Kenwood R5000 , Icom IC-R70 .
How much??
If this came out with a Yaesu or Icom badge, everyone would be beside themselves about how those brands had revived their tradition of great receivers. A quick request - could you put some specs in your videos?Ta.
Specs were shown at the start of the video, bottom left of screen. No point in reeling the whole spec sheet as I get winged at that I’m just reading a spec sheet. Links in the description to the products where the full specs are. I agree with you though, covering more specs would be good.
@@TechMindsOfficial Nice review and receiver, shame the next band starts at 404MHz only 4MHz less to receive Radiosondes (weather balloons.
Thanks for the video. Gonna grab one for my travels when I am abroad for work in hotels and airports etc. The performance on that small telescopic antenna is wild!
Good choice!
Some things to remember when dealing with China and other clones: You must have the seller state what FW version (such as 1.10d or 2.40...etc) it has and ask if it is legal/upgradeable. DSP-2 receivers for those who are not aware, are the LAST model of the receiver using Russian-originated software. The actual Russian Malahit receivers are now at the DSP-3 model, with some significant improvements, including apparently changes to reduce noise from the screen. But ordering direct from Russia remains a challenge at this point. Chinese clone makers have done a very good job of adapting the Russian software to various designs and this is the latest one. The problem with all of these is that there are so many options available in the software for signal processing, such as PREAMP and other settings, that for listening to today's SW broadcasts, you're almost better off using a Tecsun 330 or 990 or H-501. Some people are confusing the MODEL of the receiver (DSP-2 for example) with the firmware (i.e. 1.10d). You're quite correct that build quality on this appears to be substantially better than other units online. And there are TWO antenna inputs which is a good thing, like the old V3 SDR which is still shown as being available online.
Well, the seller that I used states firmware version and that it’s licensed and upgradable, which is why I would recommend anyone interested in this item to use the links I provided.
That is confusing!
I've checked the Malachite Team website for the newer DSP3 and... got a bit frustrated. DSP3 is just DSP2 with (welcomed) incremental improvements: faster UI, less internal noise, USB-C connector.
I was hoping they already had for selling the DDC version. The DDC prototype was very promising, with several MHz of visible and IQ bandwidth and no-gap coverage.
I'm impressed with this. I'm looking to get one myself
How about let’s not buy things from Russia for the time being.
Can't wait to get my official one ... thank you for your videos always good watching when I can't sleep
Amazing little radio, does everything that my 3 racks full of older receivers does
I bought a DSP SDR exactly the same as demonstrated it took ages to arrive I didn't know the country that made it, after making so checks I found out it was made in RUSSIA, and it's beautiful made in a grey metal case, wished I had left the screen protector on, but I removed it as the demonstrator did I must now get another screen protector, the radio arrived very well packed, and now I have to read the instructions that came with it, I am also a Radio Amateur and I have lots of ham radio friends in RUSSIA and also all over the world, I'm so glad I bought the radio the comment was written by Barry G4DIP!
Thanks for this video. I currently own a licensed Malahit one but usually use it with a magnetic loop as the telescopic whip mainly picks up the display noise. This one looks worth the money.
73, and have a nice day!
It looks like to be the new high-end standard for DSP receivers. Tons of controls and settings. Looks good to me!
Impressive radio. Love the colour waterfall, and clear audio with NR.
Pretty slick. Price is amazing for what you are getting. I was expecting $1000. Look what it does and compare it to the eaton 750 at $600. This thing at $400 CDN is a steal.
Well, you sold me...I just ordered one. Not cheap, but they look and sound like a quality product...!!! 😊
That's quite impressive DSP performance. I was hoping you were going to ultra-dazzle me and reveal it also might do digital decoding (P25/DMR, etc...) but I suspect that could be possible in later FW/SW updates...
If it did, I'd be buying one right this moment.
I want DMR and recording
Great small SDR radio! It’s looks so well built for sure. Impressive 😊
I just got mine all the way from China. Took almost a month to get to the United States (Utah). I will say already that it is very good for the money! The only thing is all the birdies it generates but it doesn't generate any more than and other synthesized rig, really. Takes a day or two to figure out how to make use of it and optimize it for various bands. For example, the settings you might need to get good reception on AM (MW) would be a bit different than for the nearby shortwave (HF) bands. And VHF and UHF and broadcast FM music stations, all have their optimum settings you will have to fiddle with. I was amazed when I listened to my local AM station on 570 (KNRS in Salt Lake City) at night and could hear another station on 570 (co-channel interference) somewhere else in the USA. But with the Attenuation setting, I took the attenuation all the way up to 20 or so and got rid of the distant station entirely, as my local station was still very strong at 20 db Attenuation, whereas the distant station was no longer receivable. Very versatile and capable little rig! Lots of ways to clear up interference. I've never had a receiver (until now) sensitive enough to get that other 570KHz station from far away, so that says a lot. I only have good AM and SW reception with a High-Z antenna, which I happened to have and put to good use (Airspy YouLoop). Seems like anything below 30 Mhz needs a High Z but I have not tried a lot of other antennas yet so take that with a grain of salt at this point. I just got it the other day. The signal to noise ratio on civilian aircraft (118 to 137 mHz) and military aircraft (225 to 380mHz) is really good, better than my half dozen other radios that have those bands, including my Uniden SDS200. Good S/N ratio on weak air band signals is good to have. Also ham sounds great from HF SSB up the UHF.
That little radio sounds epic.. ideal for air shows!
for airshows you can get receiver for 1 tenth of cost of this
Wow, excellent NR and the audio is fantastic..!!
for 400usd, it should be!
Greetings from Bulgaria🇧🇬!
What a time to be alive!
This is an impressive receiver. I've been looking for a "sensible" portable SDR receiver for airband and HF and this is it!
Also waiting for the X6100 mark 2....
Nice review :-) This radio is evolving into something really good, far surpassing the popular single chip superhets / baseband dsp radios.
Bought one from AliExpress and can confirm “insanely good”. It came with 2.40 firmware installed. Telescopic antenna reception very good indoors and better outdoors…even better with long wire attacked with alligator clip. Preamp and notch filters excellent. Downsides: poor tuning knobs, manual, and no info re memory saving. Altogether light years above competition.
Nice, I love my DSP-2.
How long is your long wire? Any balun, or tuner?
I've now had the radio a couple months and the only thing I don't like about it is it seems easily overloaded by local stations that are strong. I seem to pick up a good bit of spurious signals and harmonics too. Overall happy with it though.
Just ordered one... cant wait!
I reached the conclusion that the only good portable self-contained SDR SW receiver for less than a grand was a transceiver in terms of being able to quickly tune and get to where you want to listen. I have an older Malahit which is kind of usable, apart from the gummy tuning knob that goes backwards almost as much as it goes in the intended direction, but I can’t see the screen outdoors, even when it’s cloudy. This model might change my mind.
yes i have the same ...and your spot on with that lol
@@davidlangford5383is it chinaman fake copy ? or the real Russian one ?
Yeah. In fact the only portable receiver I use these days *isn't* less than a grand: it's a KX3. But this is quite good.
The noise reduction on 40 worked awesomely ! The other day 40 was a bit noisy for me and I hit the NB button on my Yaesu and it did very little!
I have a Malahit V3 and it is my best receiver since I live in a place with very high levels of noise. Its NB and NR are the best compared to all my best radios. Some come very close such as the Icom IC-R71A (NR) and Yaesu FTdx-3000 (NB).
That first guy speaks proper Finnish rally English. :) greetings from Finland.
On Ch38 the Italian guy always comes in strong when mother nature in our favour for the UK roughly 10:00 utc but the guys in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, always talk straight over lol 😂 It’s coming strong now I’ve got my 2 element quad faced your direction. Hopefully I can hear you 🇦🇺👍
That screen is outstanding.
I was wondering if these existed - portable SDR is awesome
The only fault I would point out is the inability to connect a PC to manage memories or stored frequencies. Otherwise, the DSP2 looks really good and I would buy it for portability or trips, but I don't know where I would store the mentioned frequencies, which I would then like to tune again from my home workplace. Thx for nice rewiev.
Sounds very good. I've ordered it a few minutes ago. 🙂
Where did you buy it?
@@Nn-xc4hc I have bought a DSP1 on Ebay. It's a bit cheaper and has a few less functions, but this is not really bad. I'm very satisfied with it. It has the same housing. but in a different colour (dark blue).
Hmm nice audio but it should be for that price ! I would have liked to seen a MW and LW scan with it using a loop or just the whip etc plus RDS reception on FM. Yes the NR does a good job also with my Malachite V5 clone
Just got one. Wow. Incredibly good. Only niggle is the encoder which has to be spun sometimes. Other than that, absolutely brilliant.
Seems like an excellent receiver. I was just curious about the bandwidths offered for SSB and CW. Airband sounds great! The NR is really superior compared to other receivers.
I can get 10 kc wide on USB for some of the pirates like MRI and Wolverine that are very wide with my Rusky DSP2, there are 3 presets, narrow , medium and wide but you can tailor each one to your own preference, same firmware so this clone should do the same. NR is insanely good, no loss of high audio frequencies
Hopefully, people will develop firmware for it as they have done for the Quan Sheng HTs.
The audio and sensitivity are amazing especially on that antenna. What would be really good is if it had a second mode where it could operate as a traditional VHF/UHF scanner at high scan speed.
I suspect you could use it with a PC and SDR sharp ?
@@doriancreber7139 Yes, you could do that.
Looks and sounds amazing!
The interesting thing from this clip was the comment the person made on the airwaves @05:56 the decommissioning of 3G mobile phone signal. As a Blackberry curve user I will lose my internet since only 4/5G will be available. I believe that they will fall back to 2G for only voice and text. So that was a very interesting catch on the airwaves.
Fantastic equipment! 👏👏👏 Thanks for the video. 🙏
Just been looking at one of these, great timing
I noticed this video was from about 4 months ago and that time have you had any problems with this radio?
Very nice as some have said if it had an Icom or Yaesu badge it would sell like hot cakes, very impressive
Finally one that seems the most worth buying. Nice look as well..
Impressive for its compact size!
As always...great review and YT production. You've got real style. Question for you: Can the Malahit DSP2 be used while charging (or while connected to a battery bank? Thanks!
Thanks! Yep, you can use it while charging. Well, on mine I can. Cheers
Thanks for the super quick reply! Good to know. I think I'll go ahead and order one @@TechMindsOfficial
Thats brilliant. Got a good deal on one ! ❤
This version finally looks practical enough to make me order one.
Its performence looks really good and the buildquality and user interface looks very good.
This has been asked before but does somebody know what the difference between the two Aliexpress offers is?
Only one version ships to my place anyway but still, 100$ difference should have some reason, right?
one is probably real and the other is probably a paperweight.
@@innercityprepper
I see where you a coming from but lets hope you are wrong, since only the cheaper one would ship to my place.
I will report back once I received it.
If anyone is wondering, I had to buy the cheaper one since the other one wouldn't ship to me.
My order got shipped then about a week later it just said "shipment cancelled".
After contacting the seller he promised me to resend it.
After another week I just got the money back without any further explanation.
Looks like no radio for me. :(

With respect to the versions sold ~1yr ago It seems they added some bells and whistles and they almost doubled the price!
Similar display, same bandwidth192KHz and so on. Cool
Wow
My next favorite radio!
Good choice!
Why don't you use the telescope input HI-Z and turn on the preamp?
I bought one of these. The build quality is absolutely beautiful, but the reception just doesn’t seem nearly as sensitive as on the original Russian Malahit DSP2. When using the Hi-Z setting on this 2023 version, I can barely hear anythin at all. On the 50-Ohm setting with the telescopic antenna, it’s better, but still doesn’t pick up as much as the original DSP2. Listening on 40 meters today, the Russian DSP2 picked up tons of signals, but the 2023 clone only got a few of the strongest ones. Maybe I got a dud or something?
Would love to see you review this radios performance on the Medium Wave band.
A little bit pricy, but really good performance.
Dear Santa, I've been very good this year....
Anyway this reciever is chinese clons branch. Russian original reciever now has DSP3 version.
now we need a matching transmitter in exact same case
...with Bluetooth connectivity between the two so you don't need a bunch of cables.
No
@@jargero8203 So, how can I pair it up with a Drake T4XC transmitter? I at least need "antenna" and "mute" connections.
Wait a few months, it's in the pipeline.
Awesome. Almost unimaginable a few years ago. Good review, thanks.
Very interesting radio friend.
Got lot stations around of world.

Hi, is there a massive difference between the DSP 1. Same design.
Please can you tell us how the encoders are
Are they notched, are they optical, does it skip values?
In short, are they of good quality or medium
THANKS
I need some question about the encoders mechanicaly or opticaly. Thanks vy 73
This looks pretty decent
Im im the market for a radio with a waterfall display. I only listen as im not licenced, so this could save a decent amount of money until i get the licence. I enjoy the ft817 but id like a waterfall.
Get an SDRPlay RSPdx and invest in a good all band antenna and lmr400 cable to converter with ground and lightening protection. It does everything and is the core of any station for receiving. Chinesium radios are never worth 300 bucks, EVER! They hate us and use junk to build gear.
@super66craig could i decode weather satellites with it ? My ft817 doesnt work for them and barely gets a decodable image. Not high enough resolution ive been told.
KD6TXB nice radio thanks for the review
youre welcome
Looks and sounds absolutely awesome, but as someone who runs a contest station I know that it's not all that hard to flip the dial and find stations that are loud and sound fantastic, especially when the Solar Cycle is as good as it is now. And yes there are lots of JA stations that have stacked Mono Banders that can throw a 59+ signal on the higher bands in the Morning or near sunset all the way to the East Coast of the USA.
What I would have liked to have seen is an A/B comparison of a weak station on the DSP2 versus any of the normal ham radio transceivers. I have used lots of different radios so that could provide a pretty good reference point as to how well this thing is really receiving.
BTW if I sound a bit wary it's because I saw your video and was really excited, up until the point when I read the reviews on Amazon for the Previous version. Now I need some real comparative proof of how it compares to something like my Icom 7610.
Not an unfair request considering this cost half the price of a full blown transceiver like the Icom 7300.
Note, I am not asking you to do it, but the company needs to get someone to do it.
Great looking portable receiver! Would be even more great if it also had decoders for some of the most commonly used (both data nad voice) digital modes like RTTY/FT8/AFSK1200/POCSAG/SSTV/FreeDV/M17/D-STAR/DMR/etc. 🙂
This receiver was stolen by the Chinese from "malahiteam". The original receiver in the new firmware can already decode FT8
@@R1CBU This is an authorized , licenced clone and can be upgraded to the new firmware with the RTTY and FT8 decoding
@@dave10524 I asked the authors and you were right. This version is actually made under license. My apologies!
@@R1CBU To be fair, there are so many unlicensed clones out there that it's actually kind of shocking to find one that's actually licensed with Malahit. I'd assumed it was unlicensed too. Great to see that the rights situation might be improving!
@@R1CBU Not Stolen! they are in league with the two Russian guys to overcome the trade embargo, the firmware is registered to you when you buy one, so you can upgrade it officially. will get this soon
I appreciate if malahit would have bigger display - 4.3" or 7 " instead the speaker.
Is there a chance that producers will ever relase new firmware version with other digital modes - JT65, WSPR, PSK31, FT4 , ....?
I just got mine, and I'm really impressed with it. One minor niggle is that the FM station RDS is not working, even with strong stations and all the settings carefully checked. Have you had this problem? A few letters came though just for a second but nothing since.
I get RDS on mine but only on very strong FM signals. And try waiting a minute or two for the words/info to show up. My car radio in my Honda Civic get RDS a bit better than this does.
Good video looks nice how much are they to buy just asking can you pick up air band on it just asking where do you get these radio from
Great video. Is the bandwidth adjustment for each mode a continuously variable adjustment or are they fixed settings? Thanks.
You can scroll continously...The band shows bookmarks for easy setup.
excellent video.. a question, the link you mention for purchasing the radio on the Bangood site is the Russian or Chinese version?-- is there a big difference?
What is High Z? I haven't heard of that one yet.
Z means impedance- Most rigs are designed for 50 Ohms impedance and antennas should be adjusted for same for efficient power/signal transfer. Impedance is the combination of resistance, inductive reactance and capacitive reactance. In a resonant system, the impedance shows as resistance only- such as 50 Ohms. The reactances cancel each other out. A short antenna will have a high Z unless resonant. Eg 2metre band could use 19.5 inch length but would be hi Z on short wave bands. Hence having a hi Z input for whip.
73 Dave G4BTI.
This is from the Malahit website : What is HiZ input?
Telescopic short antennas at frequencies up to 30 MHz have a high input impedance (hundreds of ohms and above) and when they are connected to devices with an input impedance of 50 ohms, good reception will not be possible - 50 ohms will shunt the antenna.
You can see that in our radios, turning on the HiZ input will significantly improve the quality of reception.
Makes sense with this explanation.
Can anyone confirm that the second AliExpress link is the same radio ? Its priced significantly lower at $259. Just making sure its not a different version.
I looked at both, and the less expensive one has a deliver date of december 19, vs November 2 on the more expensive one. Perhaps that's the diff?

Glad it was helpful!
What is the charging time with a standard phone charger, and can you see when the battery is full?
Could I use this as a local emergency scanner?
I have one question for you, what is the widest it can receive and display at one time? Is it anything like the RSP1a's 10MHz or is it limited like the inexpensive RTL-SDR type of dongles?
Do you need an external antenna to use this receiver? I’m new totally new to this hobby, so any advice would be helpful. Thank you
