Unofficial on the build name doesn't mean that it was unsupported by Google, it means that it wasn't an official device in the CyanogenMod Repo. the CM repo meant it was getting nightlies from build bots, had an official maintainer, and also met a minimum level of support/quality.

I worked a company specializing in print graphics, engraving, and pad printing. Google commissioned us to imprint the Nexus Q logo on cables intended for demo units of the Q, which were quite impressive. The cables featured braided cable with anodized plugs. Upon receiving a spec sheet detailing the logo requirements, I produced a sample for their approval. However, when four young guys arrived for inspection, they expressed dissatisfaction, stating, "This is not what we were thinking." Despite nailing specifications, they insisted, "We are not using those specs." These guys appeared intelligent and motivated, but it became evident that none of them had prior manufacturing experience. I was not surprized when the whole thing was cancled.

Actually I have a Nexus Q, I was one of the ones having gotten it for free. I was able to actually run my own software on it and it is now a stylish bluetooth speaker with a not that bad audio amplifier - better than all those "speakers" around. A monitor connected to the HDMI port (small screen) shows playlists on my NAS etc. It is a stylish thing on my rack in the bedroom.

I like the Q's design too, but I don't get why they gave it banana plug outputs instead of cinch and headphones jack.
If you use cheap speakers, they often use a headphones jack for connection, and if you are using better speakers, you want to use a dedicated amplifier setup/AV receiver anyways - to which you would need to connect the Q with cinch, XLR or something like that. And if you want to connect wired headphones to the Q, you would need a headphones jack.
For that reason, it would simply not work in my current setup. I already have an amplifier for my hi-fi speakers (using bare wires instead of banana plugs), to which the TV, HTPC, turntable... are connected. I would need the device to be connected to the amplifier too - but the Q lacks cinch output (the amp's optical already is used by the TV). If I would connect the speakers directly to the Q, I would have, first of all, terrible sound (there is a reason hi-fi equipment is expensive), and second, I would be unable to use them for anything but the Q.

14:30 Unofficial didn't mean it was because Google didn't support it. Unofficial means it was an unofficial CyanogenMod build; either this means CM didn't support the device or someone compiled an unofficial build for whatever reason. This was a CyanogenMod ROM that someone ported to the Nexus Q, compiled, and distributed themselves.
Other tags that CM had were experimental, nightly, and snapshot. If it was a fully official stable build it lacked a tag at all. So for example if this was an official build it'd be named simply CM-11-steelhead without the extra tagging.

The audiofools might turn up their noses at the tech, but class D amps are quite the revolution in consumer audio: They are cheap to make, and so efficient you don't need a big expensive heatsink. Honestly the $299 price might not be that crazy if you view the device as a two channel amp for discrete speakers rather than a simple streaming box. Not sure what the audio quality was, but I do know that there are two channel streaming amps that cost way more (Sonos Amp for example). Now with that said that doesn't change anything about the feature set being a bit lackluster for the price.

    • @Robert-zz7qj
      @Robert-zz7qj 10 місяців тому +1

I was thinking the same thing, but then you have to admit that the target audience for this device probably doesn't know the difference between active and passive speakers. On the other hand, people who do know would be put off by the low price, as they are used to spending thousands of dollars on their audio experience.

    • @Alexlfm

It’s still outrageous to most consumers when, even in 2012 you could get a surround amp for that price. These days you can get a full Atmos receiver or a tube amp for $300. Sure some people will pay more for stuff like Sonos but it’s a small segment of the market.
Fundamentally Google is/was never in a position, brand wise, to sell a device like that. At that price point it’s all about marketing and having a slick UI both things Google are bad at.

My question is: _do_ they actually exist. Or are they almost all embedded inside TVs?

    • @BettMagnett

What if you have a very old TV that was not very expensive when it came out, there still exist a lot of those today and especially did a decade ago!
Basically a Flatscreen, not a CRT, but with only picture and audio settings menus, and no smart WI-FI or apps interface OS at all.

I have a dev board with basically the same hardware minus the amplifier, the PandaBoard ES. I did somewhat groundbreaking work with Linux on ARM using that, there weren't a lot of affordable ARM dev boards around when it came out, Raspberry Pi didn't even exist yet (for sale anyway). The PandBoard was $200 at the time, which was a bargain compared to anything else with its class of hardware.

This brings back memories. I was an Android dev when it was released, and received one in 2012. At the time I was doing 'fringe' development projects (Motorola's Webtop to full on Ubuntu), and was crazy enough to even release tuned custom ROMs to expand it's capabilities. In essence, it ended up being my first Android 'TV' device once I got done with it.
What's funny is the Q is one of the few things I STILL have from my time as a developer.

if you look at it as a device that's only gonna be used for music, it's actually not a bad device. Sonos would be it's biggest competitor, and I think if Google and stuck to that they would've done better with it. A Sonos Amp which is the closest thing to the Q that they offer, costs like $200 more and does less. If they had gone for that it would be a pretty good alternative to a device like that.

Speaking of Google killing products, I have to add Nik software. Nik made, amongst other things, a fantastic program called Capture NX. It was innovative in how it handled localization of adjustments, while still being simple.
Google bought Nik, killed just about every product, except some plug-ins It's disgusting how companies get bought for a small subset of what they have and everything else is tossed away. It's the opposite of innovation.

In favor of ok Google's products like speakers from 3rd parties. Eventually it got folded in with the Google's Nest hubs and speakers line now.

Everything being on the cloud is a perfect way to lose all of your music because some mega corporation bought another mega corporation and messed up their licenses. That's ignoring how these services can simply shut down with no backups. It also absolutely eliminates the possibility of listening to anything you want to. Seriously, just download music. Streaming is for convenience only and should not be relied upon entirely.
