What a marvellous portrait of a terrific guy. I'll never forget his courage in Monza, when he had that terrifying accident exiting Parabolica, jumped out, shook himself off, walked to the pit lane, and just got on with it. I was in the back seat of the Medical Car at Spa when Derek came up to have a chat with Sid about a month after Paul was killed. At the time (my second F1 race), this was the closest I'd been to death at the circuit. I was moved deeply by Derek's dignity and the depth of his suffering. It was a powerful introduction to the other side of the sport we love. Bravo Mario. And bravo Derek.
I worked with Derek on the PR side, and the change in him after the death of Paul was palpable. Before the accident he truly was the nicest guy in F1, but after Paul’s death it was as if a light had been extinguished . . .
Many thanks for all your comments. Being able to meet Derek was such an honer. Listening to him and feeling the passion for racing in the room was unique. It is great to see that some of that experience can be shared with a large number of fans out there. A lot of hours go in the production these documentaries without getting any monetary compensation, but is always a big motivator to read and see how many people like my "hobby". There are so many great stories in formula one that need to be told. I can only carry on trying to find and convince people to share them when you keep on watching, commenting and sharing. That is the only way I can "compete" with TV broadcasters. Thank you.
You video/interview was fantastic, Derek was wonderful. Please keep it up, these are great and I haven't seen anything else quite like it. I can't say enough positive things about your stuff Mario. Bravo!
Absolutely brilliant work Mario. Can't praise you enough, and I mean that. Mr. W is a really fantastic bloke too, I remember listening to him on Goodwood radio a year or two ago and he was absolutely mesmerizing to listen to.
Without doubt, your work is tremendously appreciated here, Mario. Many thanks for your time and effort in allowing "under the radar' stories emerge and be heard. As "Paww" said above, Derek, in this case, was wonderful.
TV broadcasters should be ashamed of themselves that "some guy with a camera" manages to get these stories told in such a neatly styled video all on his own dime. Mad props Mario Muth, your videos are stunning (and honestly, I thought they were assignments for some big outlet, didn't realise it's just you sharing your passion).
I have to admit that listening Derek talking about his little brother is heartbreaking. That shows that you can only accept the sorrow and learn how to live with that, but you can't overcome it. I have no words kind enough to thank you, Mario, for this interview. What a special human being Derek is. What a gentleman. Thank you again, Sir.
Great stuff, Mario. Derek was a good driver. I saw him racing in my home town, Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian GP from 1982 to 1989, in Jacarepagua. In 1984, Brazilian GP, driving his first race for Renault, he was leeding when his car broke. He deserved a least a victory in F1. Marcelo
Fantastic interview with a real gentleman. That's a higher compliment in my book than being ruthless to become a "legend". Listening to Derek talk about his brother was hard to watch. He's got a lot to be proud of!
I absolutely LOVED Derek "Old Man DelBoy" Warwick when I was growing up, maybe because he ran those lovely Arrows powered by Megatron engines, the coolest engine name EVER. He also seemed to be a fair, honest, non nonsense guy, not a prima donna at all. Mario, what about you setup a patreon so we can help you finance producing more interviews and documentaries, they are fantastic!
Fascinating documentary. I always considered myself a fan of Derek. It might seem silly, but many, many people thought Derek was a better prospect than Nigel Mansell. It was a shame that Derek's F1 career took that wrong turn with Renault and never really recovered.
I remember watching Derek in Austria in the 80s in the revolutionary (but crap) Brabham. In practice he got a puncture right in front of us while going flat out on the straight and went upside-down for a few hundred yards. He got out of the car, ran back to the pits, got in the spare car and went straight out again. At the (first) Hungarian GP we were invited to a reception by one of the Brabham sponsors, and met Derek (and Ricardo Patrese who was a right sourpuss). I'll never forget Derek going to the buffet and getting some ice cream. Then he saw my wife and said "How rude of me", gave it to my wife and went back and got another one for himself. What a GENT! Mind you, maybe he was after my wife LOL.
Ron Tauranac is probably the most underrated car designer/engineer in history. Through Brabham, RALT he has had a hand in so many great cars and careers. Warwick is an English Alan Jones.
I guess Warwick wouldn't possibly be as pleased reading your comment :) A long interview is on YT with A.Jones openly describing himself as selfish as it was necessary to get the best out of his team and to outperform his team mates. It's quite embarrassing just listening to him naming his colleagues "nothing but things" to get rid of when racing them on the tracks. Warwick seemingly is all another stuff imho.
@@nnoddy8161 Evidently you know him personally or far deeper than me,however words do mean something in adults' world, that's why comparing Warwick's and Jones' narration made me pretty sure they had nearly opposite attitudes towards their fellows on the track and in the pits. Their words are showing a different mindset,a different way to look at things in their professional context.
Briefly met Derek a couple of years ago at Autosport Show, walking on his own no security, noPA ,and more importantly noBS! Atop bloke amongst all too many egotistical believe their own publicity jerks😀 Carry on with all your hard work for the sport we love Derek
I didn't know about the lotusgate, but I agree with DW, Senna has so much respect for him, knew of what he can do and damage Senna's ambition, I like both legends.
I have no words to describe what i just saw. I'm 40, follow very closely F1. since i was 10. My favourite driver ever was this gentleman, Derek Warwick. From now on he's become my favourite personality. Hope i could meet him personally one day.
Riveting. What an amazing interview with such a lovely guy. I was almost in tears when he spoke about his brother. I saw Paul race quite a bit during the season he was killed and he was lightening fast. I was at Oulton Park the day his story ended and the memory of that day has never left me. Thank you for this.
What an amazing interview!! I so remember the Motoring News articles of Paul Warwick testing the Arrows F1 car on a dis-used airport runway and the bright future which lay ahead of him!! RIP Paul Warwick and standing ovation to you Derek, you have my profound respect!!
Love, love, LOVE this man. Had the pleasure of interviewing him myself and didn't have the balls to ask him about Paul because I feared he would do as he is in this clip and struggle to fight back the tears - if he had done that in front of me I would have broke down. To see the pain in his eyes and know that he's never recovered from it is shattering. Del Boy was a TRUE racers racer and deserved so much more than he managed to achieve in F1. Should have been World Champion thats for sure. Top bloke!
As brazilian myself and big fan of Senna, I recognize the great honor of Mr. Warwick. I am about to post my tribute video for Senna 30 years and Mr. Warwick will be definetily in it. It´s very difficult to find such a great man as him. Very good upload dear Mario, thank you!
Watched F1 since the late 70's everyone had respect for Derek, hearing his thoughts on Paul, much respect to the man, i think he will look back at this with pride.
What a piece, well done. He is an amazing story teller and no matter how many times he tells the story, when he speaks about his little brother he ends in tears.
Thank you so much for these videos, they are my favourite motorsports videos I've ever seen and I just keep coming back to watch again and again, I really hope you make more they're fantastic
Mario Muth Thank you Mario, they have to be the most insightful, meaningful and interesting interviews I have ever seen, you have an incredible talent for this, and your viewers of course understand that of course it will be difficult for you to get a hold of a celebrity for an in depth interview but the few you are able to get are pure gold, thank you so much Mr Muth you have a great talent
Incredibly compelling and fascinating interview. Derek's candor over his brother's death is heart-wrenching. Kudos to him for opening up and well-done Mario to weave his story together so well.
The guy is a top chap - very pleasant & courteous when you see him in Jersey - about time that a long interview with him was filmed - well done. Just waiting for him to do an autobiography ! -such a life of history
I fall in love with Derek during '83 Monaco GP Edition. I was 18th year old at the time and I was there with my father to attend the race. I remember his battle with Marc Surer like it was now. Then I became a big supporter of him. I was doing motocross at the time and I made my helmet with same colours as Derek. Living in Italy where everybody supports Ferrari and Ferrari's drivers it was not easy. I think Derek has been the greates F1 driver who never win a race. A real gentleman. Very good interview.
Brilliant. Always liked Derek as a driver and as a kid thought that the 1985 Renault team with Warwick and Tambay would be a beast... but it was bad. Very bad...
Brilliant video. Thank you for an amazing job. Enjoyed following Derek's and Paul's careers. The loss of Paul Warwick was one of the saddest days, we were robbed of a star but Derek's work with safety and the BRDC honours both of them.
I know Derek from races and GP's I was following for my job. A really nice guy and a true passionate one about motorsport. This interview is touching and show us a great man with a big heart. Thanks
This is an amazing interview, and what a great man Mr.Warwick was and is. Without forgetting how quick and high skilled he was as a driver. Maybe one of the few that had less than deserved from F1 world, but luckily he achieved such great victories and great moments behind the wheel of any other car he had driven.
Really incredible, great work Mario, I always had a soft spot for Warwick as he was one of my late Granddad's favourites. Now i can understand why, Such a great man. Could listen to him for hours
A fantastic interview of an amazing person and driver . Very moving aswell . I was at Silverstone when they announced Paul had been killed and my heart went out to Derek then . Mario, thanks for your work. This interview is fabulous, Derek telling his story in racing in a cool but passionate kind of way at the same time. Outstanding, I love this, one of the best motor racing interviews I have ever watched. Thanks again.
This is the second time I've watched this documentary. It brought back those terrible memories of Paul Warwick fatal accident and the emotions related to my love of racing from those days. Thank you all.
Mario, you have made another fantastic interview. Actually the word "interview" is to light. I think your "interviews" are masterpieces. The persons you pick, the qay you let them tell their story, camerawise.. everything. I just hope to see more and more of these !
Always a fan of Derek Warwick. I remember that race in 1982 when he passed Didier Pironi. How brilliant to save their sponsorship? Get on TV. Get the motor racing press talking about Toleman! Excellent interview, full marks! He seemed like he was involved in motorsport for all the right reasons, especially evidenced by his contributions to the sport post retirement. Chapeau Mr Warwick!
I raced in junior ministox with his brother paul.I still believe to this day that paul was on his way to being our next british driver to become F1 world champion.
This is such a wonderful, honest presentation full of deep emotion. It has only just appeared in my inbox. We followed Derek when he was trying to make something of the Old Spice Alfa 155 which was past its prime. Thank you for posting. So well assembled and documented..just fascinating.
Thank you so much for making this. Thank you for Derek to open up and keeping in the end product that rarely gets shown. I was wondering how much Derek would share about his brother and I was brought to tears. If you could do this full time visiting with them all that would be great. Riccardo Patrese next?
That was a superb interview. Really enjoyed that - I remember Derek Warwick in F1 when I started watching it in the mid-late 80s but I have to say most of his recollections were completely new to me. Mario, this is absolutely brilliant well done I love your work it really opens my eyes to what motorsport is really about and the deeper side to it. Don't stop what your doing keep making these videos they are truly spectacular! All the best Marc (Australia, South Australia - Adelaide)
Marc Mastrodomenico Thank you Marc... I will try to do more, but it is hard to get to the right people without the access TV stations have. Lots of fans watching, sharing and commenting help enormously in convincing people to spend time with me as a paddock outsider.

Yep, I really enjoy them as well. Keep up the great work :)
The Broadbent seal of approval in 2019 is all i need!...dont worry Jimmer @2014...everything is gonna be alright ;)
Fantastic interview with a real gentleman. That's a higher compliment in my book than being ruthless to become a "legend". Listening to Derek talk about his brother was hard to watch. He's got a lot to be proud of!

That was simply sensational. I've never seen Derek so emotional like that, ever. Bravo, Mario. A truly stunning interview.
What a marvellous documentary...it's very "old school" in that you just let the man tell his story....
What a decent man Derek is - wonderful video. Thanks for sharing this with us all.

great interveiw as always mario lets have more mr warwick you sir are a legend
Great interview! I didn't expect to hear so many terrific and also sad stories. Have no regrets Derek. Few people have such an amazing career

thankyou derek that was excellent....
there shouldn't be any question mark about a British Grand Prix
A superb interview. I followed his exploits ever since watching him race superstocks in '74. He was always a good driver just needed the right car.
Quite superb long form interview with a great, great man. Thank you.
This should have 20k likes! Being too nice and honest gets you off the score board. Ruthless senna = 3 world Championships

Marc Mastrodomenico Thank you Marc... I will try to do more, but it is hard to get to the right people without the access TV stations have. Lots of fans watching, sharing and commenting help enormously in convincing people to spend time with me as a paddock outsider.
wow nice interview dude. I enjoyed every minute of it. I love historic information of what really happened behind the scenes :)
Unsung hero of Formula 1!
Great interview ! Fascinating insight. What a lovely bloke. Quite moving.
lot of love in that man.
Amazing, touching, and enlightening stories from a great British driver...
The 80s and really 90s were the most amazing F1 years I have witnessed.
Exceptional...
