Thanks for this video. I am going to Tampa on a fishing trip this month. I was hoping to catch and cook a few stone crab while there. I learned a lot thank you.
Nothing better than a smoked mullet. My grandfather had a net boat for many years. He would net and smoke mullet. Fresh mullet are good fried only if you fry them fresh. After about a day they are too strong to eat because they are an oily fish. Fresh fried they are as good as catfish. Served with grits and hush puppies you can’t beat them.
Brings back memories. I lived there in the eighties and early nineties. Had a friend named Hammer that had a crab shack out on Handy. Helped him run traps sometimes. Good times. Be careful out there.
Man I'm watching Al in action and I can tell he's an experienced crabber! I love crabbing! I'm just a recreational crabber. I love to see guys crabbing and you definitely have a new subscriber! Keep the videos coming!
I'm pretty sure you have to pull these manually or else you will be considered a commercial vessel. Awesome video, and very informative throughout. Definitely experienced crabber.
It has nothing to do with how you pull them I know guys that pull 300 traps by hand and its commercial residential, you’re allowed 5 traps per person if you have salt water fishing license how you pull them dose not matter
they find plenty of food, as scavengers. Without claws, they go into a more defensive mode and hide behind rocks, but can still find plenty of food. Ideally, you'd only remove one claw, but every now and then, if jumbo, the crabber will take both. It's a debatable topic for sure.
@@FishmongerApproved I actually thought it was a law that you can only keep one claw. I pot fish conch ( whelk) and Blue Crab in Cape May NJ but I’m relocating to our winter home in Naples this spring and would like to stone crab fish
What he didn’t mention is that up to 63% of the crabs die when both claws are removed and up to 41% when just a single claw is removed…no matter how carefully they’re taken off.
I`m sure this guy has pulled a many of Traps. But he should have Gauge the Claw before he took it and when he did gauge that Claw it looked like it Fell on the Short side. Makes you wonder how many Short Claws get taken. just so you know it I am a Freshwater, Saltwater Fisherman.
Hey Al, Why is it that you can take both claws on a legal crab and other people can't?? Is it because you are a Commercial Crabber? Or because pf the insane laws are for recreational crabbers?
Crabs find other ways to defend themselves while claws grow back. They hide behind rock and find plenty of food to scavenge on. It’s debatable for sure. But legal
Darla the FWC which is a highly regulated agency for Florida wildlife permits both claws, they go into scavenger mode and hunker down eating algae and easy access food until claws grow back (which they do).
@@walterschaaf605 and you know this HOW. Pretty sure that ol Al here knows whats best for mr crabby. You see if the crab couldnt defend itself they'd all die and Ol Al here wouldnt get a paycheck. Therefor I believe that that there crab with no claws will be just fine. Mr crabby can grow multiple sets of claws per year, therefor mr crabby only has to hide in his hole down there for alittle while witthout weapons of defense. Im sorry that you never learned this during you days on the SPB as you could have been eating twice as nice. If it were not good for mr crabby the regulations would be different to insure there survival. This concludes todays lesson on Ol Al the crabber, the facts stated above are also why I do believe your opinion on Ol Al the crabber being a jerk is not intirely acurate. Good day to you fine sir. First time watching your video. Really learned alot and enjoyed.
Stone crab claws are so good! So expensive, but worth it once in awhile. That was fun to watch.
I've never had one! 😢

A great ride along experience, great video.
Just got two traps. Thanks for the 101 lesson! Much appreciated
Al does seem crabby, a NO NONSENSE MAN ! WE ALL know under his strong work ethics he has a big heart !
He has an extremely strong work ethic. Not sure I’ve ever met anyone who works as hard.
I enjoyed your video. Well done. Learned something new.

thanks so much!! And sorry for the delayed response. More to come. We just took a slight break during COVID.
Renewable resource and only the claw is prized. Tasty crab I have had

Nice video bro
Great video
It’s funny how he measured the claw after he ripped it off. What would he do if it was to small.lol
That part would of just been edited out. Lol
He’s been doing this enough years - he can measure in his sleep
@@txwelder8107 Lol hide the evidence. Ha ha ha. Crabby Al is a bad boy!!!!!!😅
What are you do when a hurricane is coming do you pull your traps
Sorry we missed this! He will pull when he can. Otherwise he goes on a post hurricane Easter egg hunt.
What is the purpose of just keeping the claw
There's very little meat in the crab itself, they're pretty much all claw, and they will grow back a legal sized claw within a year
The claws are where the meat is and can grow back. So you don't waste the entire crab. This way they remain sustainable.
Omg
The meat its in the claw
Most people won’t eat shel fish if it’s dead but if you know when it died it’s ok if it’s only hours to eat them
How do they eat with no claws?

@@tracynshea1333 Again, it’s debatable. But legally you can take both if the Claws are larger.
I see he uses plastic crab traps....we use the same ones here in the florida keys...
Where in the keys are you? We’ll be heading down there later this year and would love to connect with a crabber or fisherman
Seems like a lot of fuel, time and bait for a few little claws.
40-70 dollars a pound
Oh nice that's not bad then.
Hope that bucket is not the weekly garbage bucket!
😆
No worries. It’s only used for this

That is a great question.
rec and commercial can take both claws
I thought you were only allowed 1 claw? How is that crab going to eat and defend predators with no claws. I’m out bashing you just asking a question.
Crabs find other ways to defend themselves while claws grow back. They hide behind rock and find plenty of food to scavenge on. It’s debatable for sure. But legal
should only take one claw now hes defenseless with both claws gone keeper size or not its a shame
Darla the FWC which is a highly regulated agency for Florida wildlife permits both claws, they go into scavenger mode and hunker down eating algae and easy access food until claws grow back (which they do).
What Jeff said 👆🏼
Without one claw there’s a chance they’ll die . Without both it’s a sure thing they will not survive.
This is not a true statement.
Basically your killing the cab your just ripping the claws off leaving the crab with no defence and no means of eating
The crab doesn’t die them become gathers until the claws grow back.🦀

Wrong, you think DEC would allow you to harm crabs without regulations?
Only one Stoner claw, otherwise a crab can't defend itself and live to grow a new claw. This guy's a jerk. I grew up on SPB in the '60 and '70s.
