Mercedes Benz S124- m102: fixing a rough idle.

- I got a Mercedes Benz S124 in my garage today.
The engine is a m103 found in the w201s, w124s, and w126s
The car is a good used daily driver with 460.000km on the clock... when it broke.
The cars runs pretty well but have a very rough idle that I suspect is down to a vacuum leak.
I try to test it out, and check the hoses, the manifold gasket and the injector seals...

omg thnx! I'll try it right away! I tried everything but I found two loose injectors. didnt know how they should feel like, so I went on to look into everything BUT those :D
It is a nice trick to find vacuum leaks with the carb cleaner.
Nice job as always!
Thanks! It is.... just watch out for flames! ;)
Going to share this vid with my awesome mechanic; we are in problem solving mode! Thank you very much from California! Can’t tell you how much I love my s124!
Replace the couch fan I just did mine I noticed it wasn’t spinning fast man you are great mechanic 😊
Every video of yours that I watch, there are always many many lessons to take from them. Between your approach to solving an issue, your ethics, and how you resolve the problem, I always learn more than I knew, and open my mind to different approaches. Thanks for sharing a part of your life with all these incredible videos!
Thank you so much! Thats really a nice comment :D
excellent troubleshooting skill here!
Very interesting! Please keep them coming!
I will :)
Totally agree with your thoughts on the w124's generally nice to work on very informative thanks for the video 👍👍👍definitely a classic car in the making bw
They are pretty cool! I would like one some day.... maybe a bit bigger then the 2,3 engine... ;)
Your videos are like a happy place after a stressful day. It seems strange to hear someone from another country using the word 'thingy'. :-)
It even has manual windows, wow. Love your car
Great video!
Amazing fix!
Thanks!
Awesome work. Very easy fix, once you know what you are doing - knowing what that be looking for is the tricky part! :) I love simple fixes like this, that do not require any spare parts, just time and mind exercises :)
Exactly! fixing stuff with you hands and tool and no new parts is the best!
It has a 5 speed and cloth interior!?! Smh. Why didn’t the states get them. Sad. I have a 1990 300e. Just bought it for $600. It sat for 6 years. Replaced water pump, plugs, distributor cap, and rotor. Adjusted 1/4 turn up on the EHA and runs great down the road but stalls at idle. Starts up great cold but acts like it’s flooded out on restart.
Awesome bro, I'm trying tomorrow on my 230 sedan 1992 black engine also. Cheers 🥂 and lots of thanks for the tip!
Thanks for watching! :D
Good call mate, one tip I would give you when I am working on busy engine bays like that is to put some rags or towels around where you are working, that way if you do drop anything it is caught and doesn't decend into the bottom of the engine tray or get lost 🤗
Good idea!
Et dejligt fix... både selve problemet og videoen i sig selv! 😉
Tak Mads :)
Such a helpful video thank you helping mate
Thank you!
Thank u so much for sharing. Your car is a s124 and not a w124. But what is more relevant is that u fixed a m103 engine that was installed in the w201s, *124s, and *126s. If u relabeled to m103 u would help out more of the community who search, and at the same time get more views. Thank u for sharing.
Thanks! I will edit the title.. :)
Dude thanks a bunch! Amazing!
Thank you , same problem with my 230E after folowin the same steps , found same issue , now my car run like a new one , appologise my broken english , i am fromBelgium ...tx again :)
Great to hear! Glad to be able to help!
Excellent diagnoses - some things to think about for my running issues. Every time I get in a modern car I think "my 1989 e-class is SO much nicer to drive than this" - exactly as you found. I had to back into a really tight parking spot yesterday and (somewhat luckily) got it right first time to my passengers' amazement - all down to the brilliant steering properties of these wonderful cars...
Thanks!
Yes, we have also a W124 and its drive better, nicer and quieter than our new Mercedes for every day. That's because, due to the requirements in the car industry, they now have 9 nonsense gears and the suspension has to be stiff, after a moose test was introduced a long time ago and programs like Top Gear, which suddenly made all modern cars no longer drive as well as a Mercedes from the 1980s and 1990s. The stupid marketing has also ensured that normal rims no longer look good on cars and have to be ridiculously large, ruining your entire comfort. 🤦
Thank you for making this video!
I just bought a 92 300e sedan on the west coast in America... drove it home fine and started it up the next day, it kept stalling but it definitely had a rough idle like this! a little bit more violent. I suspect those brackets may have been overtightened but also, that is the hottest part of the engine (towards the back). It makes me wonder if the metal gradually flexed over the 30 years it has been on the road.
Thank you!
I believe it pretty common now with age.. :)
Never thought about the injector hold down. Going to remove both and see if they're banana shaped. Converted my w123 230te (in America) to carburator instead of k-jet. Still fighting a rough running from vacuum leak somewhere
I had the same experience my friend's grandmother was selling her late husband's car, at w124 2.0, I went there a bit backward, thinking it was mostly a big old cab ... and damn ... i am totally in love with this car, and same than you my others are 106 rallye/fiat 850spd/ tvr 280s and a panda4x4. I wasn't supposed to like that fat Wurst ... but what an amazing piece of engineering. please do video on the other w124works.
I really envy your 4x4 panda... thats really a dream car to me!
The w124 suffers a very high tax in my country so that combined with the rather low mpgs they are getting are making them quite expensive to own.... but I am really tempted.... would like a estate one with the 220bhp engine! :D
@@SeasideGarage yes my little love this panda 4x4, and they still cost nothing in france. for the 220hp, i believe it's probably very cool but even the stupid 4pot match this lazy fat lili marlene and her crazy german color mix, mine is gold outside, kind of purple tweed inside? and ..green windows :´ )
@@matta6554 Yea the 4 pot one is not bad either... it got a pretty good power band imo.
Wow... maybe I should go to france and drive one home then! When the world permits that kind of stuff again... :)
What does a good one cost in France?
@@SeasideGarage they increase lately. Use to be 2000 for a perfect one, look like more 4000 now but it's still possible to find a solid and nicely patine one for 1500,I got mine for free.
@@matta6554 wow... id like to give 1500 for one! ;)
Great video and thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have a 1991 w124 300te with the 3l straight 6 engine (m103). It has has a similar issue at idle and seems to be a little difficult to start (engine stutters/bounces during cranking until it is started, sometimes takes more than one crank to start). New spark plugs did not resolve this so maybe I will re-trace your method.
It could sound like a vacuum leak!
Check out MMWA he has a lot of good videos on the w124.
Fed video
Jeg har samme problem på min 230ce, der har stået stille i næsten 4 år, inden jeg reddede den 😊
Tak! :)
Det er nogle super gode biler... virkelig værd at redde.. :)
thanks, that was good. I suddenly got a rough and low idle on r129 on start up and am trying to figure it out. Runs great otherwise when driving along.
Thanks! Good luck with it!
@@SeasideGarage It was a dirty idler valve, plus bad OVP. Easy fixes.
Thank you
Thank you!
12:39, I've just replaced all 31-year-old breather pipes leading to and from my idle stabilizer. They're still readily available from MB, and not expensive.
omg they do? thanks!!
Thanks..
:)
I have a '95 S124 E320, I believe I have the M104, inline 6, not a diesel. I have the same up and down RPM's with a gassy/exhaust odor when the problem kicks in, any thoughts? Fuel pump is new, mass air flow is new. Any thoughts would help guide to problem solve, thanks from California!
Mine had a very slight miss, and a very slight engine shake which eventually turned to making the m103 a 5 cylinder since cyl one wasn’t getting fuel. Replaced
The fuel distributor, the old one was all gunked up
The fuel distributor is a piece of art on one of those.... Hard to service without a lot of knowledge... :)
@@SeasideGarage replacing them is a piece of cake along with most r&r with the car. A bit tedious finding out where all the spaghetti like fuel lines get routed. Rebuilding them is probably a little harder though
These were among the last proper well built mercs before they start putting profit before quality..now there indistinguishable from a ford or a Nissan or a Citroen or any other make for that matter...everything is made from cheap plastic and have planed obsolescence built in...not to mention all the useless electronics and some cars with over 50 modules....
A lot of charm, distinctiveness and quality seems to disappear from the car scene at the millennium....
Is this a 200te, 220te or the 230te? I have a 1992 M102 200te which is currently sat in my workshop waiting to be put back on the road, and I’m having similar issues with mine.
This was a 230te... But it could be the same. :)
I have always seen the interests for big Mercedes, as a coming of age thing. Maybe this is your answer @4.20ish...
.... Am I getting old?! I noticed some gray hairs in my beard after the a112 bolt snapping experience.... :O
A big question remains… did you ever fix that vice?! :)
haha ! nope!
those spark leads look wrong too!!
Could be, but they do the job just fine. :)
What is the issue?
Vacuum leak
Possible typo? This engine looks like the 4 cyl. m102 to me. The speedometer is also for that. But to be fair I stopped watching at ~6 min. I own a 300E with 620k km on the clock. Runs great. Just replaced the clutch driven fan with an electric and it make a huge difference in our climate that could reach 50C in some good day. But that's another story.
Doh ! Yes ... It's a m102
A W124 and an Acadiane are "some" of his cars? You Danes have some fantastic fleets - most of those sort of cars in the UK get traded into a scrappage scheme for the delights of a Hyundai hybrid of some sort.............. Brits are losing their love of interesting cars
Haha!
I believe that I have some not so common friends actually....
In Denmark its the same with scrappage schemes and dull cars...
But some of us are trying to save them!
