Mercedes Benz S124- m102: fixing a rough idle.

  • I got a Mercedes Benz S124 in my garage today.
    The engine is a m103 found in the w201s, w124s, and w126s
The car is a good used daily driver with 460.000km on the clock... when it broke.
The cars runs pretty well but have a very rough idle that I suspect is down to a vacuum leak.
I try to test it out, and check the hoses, the manifold gasket and the injector seals...

It is a nice trick to find vacuum leaks with the carb cleaner.

Between your approach to solving an issue, your ethics, and how you resolve the problem, I always learn more than I knew, and open my mind to different approaches. It has a 5 speed and cloth interior!?! Smh. Why didn’t the states get them. Sad. I have a 1990 300e. Just bought it for $600. It sat for 6 years. Replaced water pump, plugs, distributor cap, and rotor. Adjusted 1/4 turn up on the EHA and runs great down the road but stalls at idle. Starts up great cold but acts like it’s flooded out on restart.

Good call mate, one tip I would give you when I am working on busy engine bays like that is to put some rags or towels around where you are working, that way if you do drop anything it is caught and doesn't decend into the bottom of the engine tray or get lost 🤗

Thank u so much for sharing. Your car is a s124 and not a w124. But what is more relevant is that u fixed a m103 engine that was installed in the w201s, *124s, and *126s. If u relabeled to m103 u would help out more of the community who search, and at the same time get more views. Thank u for sharing.

Excellent diagnoses - some things to think about for my running issues. Every time I get in a modern car I think "my 1989 e-class is SO much nicer to drive than this" - exactly as you found. I had to back into a really tight parking spot yesterday and (somewhat luckily) got it right first time to my passengers' amazement - all down to the brilliant steering properties of these wonderful cars...

Yes, we have also a W124 and its drive better, nicer and quieter than our new Mercedes for every day. That's because, due to the requirements in the car industry, they now have 9 nonsense gears and the suspension has to be stiff, after a moose test was introduced a long time ago and programs like Top Gear, which suddenly made all modern cars no longer drive as well as a Mercedes from the 1980s and 1990s. The stupid marketing has also ensured that normal rims no longer look good on cars and have to be ridiculously large, ruining your entire comfort. 🤦

I just bought a 92 300e sedan on the west coast in America... drove it home fine and started it up the next day, it kept stalling but it definitely had a rough idle like this! a little bit more violent. I suspect those brackets may have been overtightened but also, that is the hottest part of the engine (towards the back). It makes me wonder if the metal gradually flexed over the 30 years it has been on the road.

I had the same experience my friend's grandmother was selling her late husband's car, at w124 2.0, I went there a bit backward, thinking it was mostly a big old cab ... and damn ... i am totally in love with this car, and same than you my others are 106 rallye/fiat 850spd/ tvr 280s and a panda4x4. I wasn't supposed to like that fat Wurst ... but what an amazing piece of engineering. please do video on the other w124works.

I really envy your 4x4 panda... thats really a dream car to me!
The w124 suffers a very high tax in my country so that combined with the rather low mpgs they are getting are making them quite expensive to own.... but I am really tempted.... would like a estate one with the 220bhp engine! :D

@@SeasideGarage yes my little love this panda 4x4, and they still cost nothing in france. for the 220hp, i believe it's probably very cool but even the stupid 4pot match this lazy fat lili marlene and her crazy german color mix, mine is gold outside, kind of purple tweed inside? and ..green windows :´ )

Great video and thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have a 1991 w124 300te with the 3l straight 6 engine (m103). It has has a similar issue at idle and seems to be a little difficult to start (engine stutters/bounces during cranking until it is started, sometimes takes more than one crank to start). New spark plugs did not resolve this so maybe I will re-trace your method.

Mine had a very slight miss, and a very slight engine shake which eventually turned to making the m103 a 5 cylinder since cyl one wasn’t getting fuel. Replaced
The fuel distributor, the old one was all gunked up

Just replaced the clutch driven fan with an electric and it make a huge difference in our climate that could reach 50C in some good day. But that's another story.
