ACURA & HONDA J35 CONNECTING ROD BEARING RECALL

This video outlines the operation procedure: Crankshaft replacement with cylinder heads still in place. The subject J35 engine in the video had experienced excessive amounts of rod bearing wear which required a new crankshaft to be fitted along with main bearings, rod bearings, thrust washers, oil pump, oil filter housing and miscellaneous hardware. This is a major operation condensed into a pretty short video given the scope of the work performed. This not only shows the type of work that modern-day Automotive Technicians are faced with, but also offers a small glimpse into shop life. And I also set engine mechanical timing... upside down. Below is a link to a video I made last year that shows the process of reaching the operations beginning point.

I have a 2017 Honda ridgeline that is not part of the recall and unfortunately had the bearing issues with bottom end knock, it was diagnosed as what was listed in the recall and needs a whole new short block. Honda refuses to even acknowledge this problem outside the recall, so that's fun... Semms like they're screwing everyone this time around which I think has ruined Hondas reputation in my book.

If you think owners and customers are pissed off... you should see the general atmosphere in every shop across the nation regarding this entire mess. I think I speak for ALL HONDA AND ACURA TECHNICIANS when I say that this recall, while necessary, is borderline criminal in regards to the time it pays the Technician. The sad reality with this is that it's a trickle down effect. Honda releases the recall > Customers are already on alert and wanting to get it done ASAP > There's TOO MANY CARS that are affected > HONDA wants this done and all affected cars repaired ASAP > The time it pays the Technician to do the repair in no way motivates them to do it > Technicians don't want to do it because it doesn't pay > Technicians will then straight up refuse to do the job (or lollygag on it) > huge backlog of appointments for the recall at EVERY DEALERSHIP. Not to mention there's a Nationwide shortage of qualified Technicians to actually do the repair, they know this and yet, still compensate the Technicians that are actually qualified and doing the work ZERO. I swear if I get a big enough following on UA-cam I'm going to make a separate video about the pay structure of this recall and ultimately WHY it's taking so long to get them done... make no mistake, it's not the Technician's- it's what HONDA has decided to pay us to do the job that is slowing things down.

@@21Piloteer Honestly it IS disadvantageous in this regard; however, I absolutely love it otherwise. There's no other career out there that you can have that doesn't require loads of student loan debt or a college degree that you can actually make a decent living on. As it stands right now, I have no debt other than my mortgage, every single toy I could possibly want AND I'm invested. I wouldn't have been able to do that without being on flat rate and actually being able to capitalize on my knowledge, skill and most importantly; efficiency.

What a great video with good details and quality workmanship!
You should open your own shop and stop working for the dealership but never hire the hommies and get real techs similar to your skillset with intensive screening
Otherwise, most techs/shops working on this major recall will make your vehicle never in its original condition/stage again. Any car that gets taken apart like this would likely have something is missing or off alignment after reassembled. Acura and Honda = exactly 99% same parts and quality lol

Just got back my ‘18 MDX from the dealer. It only needed the bearings. The service guy said out of the 300 recalls they’ve done so far, only about 10 needed the crankshaft. And those 10 were mostly TLXs. Not sure why. Great video!

Awesome video! I have a 2017 MDX Tech and it’s been in the shop for 2 weeks. Just got confirmation today that I do need a new crank and it should be in by Friday. I have 78k miles on it, so I’m considering asking them to replace timing and water pump while in there since it’s due in the next 2-3 years. They haven’t offered, but I’m going to ask. Thanks for the great info!

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video. Requesting the timing belt and water pump is a good move on a 2017 with 78k miles. I'm pinning this comment and advising all owners of these affected vehicles out there that this operation is not one that can be done quickly and shouldn't be rushed. To everyone out there that currently has their car in the shop with a repair underway, or are currently waiting for their appointment date; please be patient. There are A LOT of cars affected by this recall and as you all well know, a nationwide shortage of qualified Technicians to carry the repairs out. To say that we are understaffed would be an understatement. Furthermore, pairing that with HONDA & ACURA shorting the Technician's time on these repairs by a substantial amount really doesn't motivate us to get these done any faster.. it actually makes me put the car in my spare bay and work on it on/off in between jobs or on my lunch break. This is a HIGH liability job with a VERY LOW reward.

What other parts would you recommend replacing while in there? Water pump/Timing? Engine mounts? Also, every dry start, I hear metal scrapping for a second but stops when lubricated-do you think that could be caused by the crankshaft? Thanks!

Unfortunately I don't have any ideas of what could be causing your noise. Suspension components are removed when replacing the crankshaft so maybe when the car was put back together, something suspension related might have been tweaked and is now making contact with another component... an example of this would be like a brake rotor dust shield now making contact with the brake rotor. I would recommend bringing it back to the Dealership to have them take a look for a proper diagnosis.

I would like to know how could my local dealer after my connecting rod bearing decide if the main needs to be changed too. How does my dealer know if my crankshaft needs replacement or not ? Should they change out my oil for free after performing this rod bearing job ?

    • @NSXavier997
      @NSXavier997  Місяць тому

The dealership doesn't decide what the engine needs, the needed repair is determined by the bearing inspection team at American Honda. The repair can go one of three ways:
      -Rod bearing replacement only
-Crankshaft replacement (comes with all components seen in this video)
-Longblock replacement - only if the vehicle was towed in due to engine lock-up.
Yes, the oil is required to be changed during this procedure, so that is a maintenance that is included in the recall. Any regular scheduled maintenance following the recall is your typical regular oil change and will have the regular service fee.

Just my personal opinion… swapping a crank the way it’s shown in this video goes against the way I learned to do it which includes balancing the complete rotating assembly and taking key measurements to verify everything is in spec. I see this as sort of a “bare minimum” approach.
This is going to be long winded, but I don’t mind at all… contrary to what one would think, most Automotive Technicians are paid on a flat rate scale. It’s an archaic pay structure that incentivizes production and output by compensating based on time units per job. This basically means that every operation has a time value. For example a brake job usually pays 2 hours. I can have a brake job done in about 20 minutes but still get compensated for the 2 hours. This allows me to stack multiple jobs in a day to make as many hours as I possibly can. It’s not uncommon for me to flag 20 hours in an 8 hour work day.
It’s a double edged sword, though. When you get a job like the one outlined in this video, it kills your ability to stack while also severely shorting the Tech on time units. This job only pays 9 hours and it took me the greater part of the day to do it, killed my body, drained my energy and not to mention is a huge liability.
The problem with this pay structure is that when the manufacturer comes out with a recall like this which requires precision and a meticulous standard of work which can’t be rushed; but has a low time value attached to it, then of course we’re going to do whatever we can to shortcut what we can to at least meet or beat the time… and that’s when things can go wrong.
Just being real. This is the nature of the business and the result of big manufacturers trying to save as much money as possible. It’s rampant throughout all brands. Ask any Tech from any brand what they think of warranty pay and they’ll tell you the same thing.
