  • Rob Hart takes us through audio clips of his former mentor and teacher Robbie Gonzalez which gives us first hand knowledge and ideas of this great mind of drumming. Robbie Gonzalez was a Berklee professor, prolific recording artist, and performed with greats like Al Di Meola. This episode features many great recordings of Robbie performing live and also working in the lesson room with Rob Hart. This is a continuation of the "mentors series" that Rob has been doing here on Drum History Podcast. The other episodes include clips with Mike Clark, Steve Smith, Tony Williams and more to come.

I enjoyed the discussion. This brings back a lot of great memories for me. I met Robbie when he was playing with Tiger's Baku in Portland, ME. I lived in So Portland, what a treat to have band of this caliber playing a local club. Robbie came to my home for some lessons which were awesome, but as Rob Hart mentions, it was also a social hang with Robbie. A home cooked dinner, going to the beach or just hanging in Portland are a few things I remember. When I move to Boston in 1982, I went every chance I could to hear Robbie with Tiger. At some point I think he moved to NYC and we lost touch. Great musician and person.

Robbie was my childhood mentor, taught me most of what I know behind the kit. I used to practice in his studio under the Ed Sullivan theater! Good times.
