I got a gift from a neighbor got a good clump about 10 inches. Have had them about 4 years they grew in a perfect circle. Nothing grew in the middle. Got a spit of rain yesterday night. Tomorrow supposed to get rain 70 percent chance. Your such a good teacher. I appreciate what you show us.
Thank you! 🥰 How nice of your neighbor to share their Iris with you! Definitely try dividing them and see how they do. They may not bloom for a year after division, but they should be happier. If they are Bearded Iris, just be sure to not plant them too deep. Good luck! 🪻

You're very welcome. Years ago, I used to transplant the whole big rhizome and it's such a waste of space and a pain to try and plant, when in fact that effort was all unnecessary. It's so much easier planting a smaller, healthier rhizome and I'm happy to share what I've learned. 💗🌸

Thank you. Now I know why my Iris wouldn't bloom the next year after I divided and moved them. I was doing it in the fall. Also, my daughter has offered me some of her Iris. I'm excited to get them!

You're very welcome! Other than bearded iris, there are also Japanese Iris (which I'd love to have one day) as well as siberian iris. Different iris bloom at different times of the year. 🥰🌸

Ironically I just bought some iris on clearance today. Now seeing this video! I bought 3 Blueberry Fair Iris… 3$ each. Now to figure out where to put them. 🤔 Thank you Vita, always a great video.

I have some bearded irises that need dividing and a friend who suggested he wouldn’t mind having a couple if I had any left over when I got through. Should I divide the iris this fall or should I do it now (early-mid August)? And when I’m ready to give the extra iris rhizomes to my friend, should I wash them first (a diluted bleach solution) to make sure I’m not transferring any bugs or diseases from my garden to hers? I had someone recommend I do that with daylily roots once upon a time, and I just wonder if you think it is an appropriate step for irises, too. Thanks, Your videos are very clear and informative. 😊
Thank you. 💗 I suggest you divide your iris now. August is an optimal time. It's a personal preference in regards to washing off the roots. I never have for my plant nursery and no one has come back saying there was an issue. Personally I think you're fine if you just dig and pot them up. 😊🌸
I had tons of irises. They bloomed the best ever this spring. Now they are nothing but mush. Very few tiny sprouts. I have dug up all the rotted tubers and will isolate the baby sprouts in case they are diseased. Fingers crossed I can save some. They were my grandmother’s from 45 years ago.

I'm so sorry to hear that this happened to your Iris. I've never had this happen to me but I did some research on it. It sounds like your iris have what's called Iris Rhizome Rot. Please do a search on that on the Internet to read more about it. You may be able to save the rhizomes but it may entail having to treat the rhizomes with 10 percent bleach solution (10 parts water to 1 part bleach). Hugs and good luck! 🤞💗

Iris rhizomes should not have dirt on top. Only the roots get dirt on top. They will grow much faster and healthier that way. I put some on clearance, into pots 5:16 in November and they bloomed the next spring. They hardly had any dirt, but I didn't know where to plant them in the ground originally. I also replanted old growth with roots. Anything with roots I kept. I will know next year how they did.
Hi there! You are correct in that you want as much of the iris rhizome to be exposed. The key is to make sure the plant is firm in the ground so that it doesn't fall over in the wind, from animals digging around the roots, etc. I love iris so much. They are a must have in any garden I feel. 😊🌸
