Nate, don't let outside pressures push you to feel the need to serve them. Your passions are yours. Everyone needs a break once in awhile and interests change over time. Plus you are still learning various things which sometimes cause distractions from previous interests. You and your channel are still very interesting and informative and one of my favorites. Your maps are always incredible and your level of talent are what I strive towards with my own map skills.

I'm legit glad to hear you might move to smaller maps. I honestly like the smaller-scale stuff more overall, and it's honestly much better to go the "small achievable goals" route and produce those instead of huge projects that still amount to only one shot/video of the final result.

Hey Nate! Thanks for the video!
What about creating maps in more different styles? Not more details than this one, maybe even less, but in other styles. For example: a mosaic style (think roman and greek floor mosaics), an angled topographic style (like drawn at a flyover sitting on the back of a dragon), a reduced geometric style (to hide some details from potentional enemys, but still a good overview) and a foldable map, that only makes sense if you fold it right. Ok, the last one is a big project and needs a lot of planning. I hope my ideas will inspire you. Have fun and take care of yourself!

I got really tired of drawing my art lately and it made me SO sad because art is a life blood for me and when I get burn out for art it just makes me so sad. So I desired to do three things, go back to the three things that I have drawn my entire life from when I was as young as three, to today and now. Those three things are dragons, Norse mythology and maps. I haven’t drawn maps properly in literal years, and I wanted to get back to it so I found your channel and am now back into drawing maps! I’m still re teaching myself how do do it properly but I think I’m getting back into it and I’m even drawing maps for my own worlds in the novel I’m writing… so thank you for helping me ect back to drawing maps 😊

a good way to deal with burnout is to not do things in big chunks. as an animator (i am not a pro), i like to animate everything all at once and sometimes i will only animate for weeks. the problem is that im not spacing my time and so i'll spend twice as long not animating as i did animating, whereas if i spread out my process then i'll have both a clearer mind when i return to the project and will still like doing it (and also my hand probably wont get as tired)

When burn out off creativity for oke hobby, it is good to change things, take a step back and try something new. This worked for me to act out my creativity in a new way - a drew a lot, then I try worldbuilding, then DMing in different ways, then mapping, than again drawing. For me that worked, because I could not only take a pause from that one thing I burned out over, but also get new Inspiration, for the time when I come back.
It is difficult, when you make it proffessional, of course... But for hobies, thats great to change things up.

I know Nate probs isnt going to see this among a sea of comments, but I wanted to say that I do fantasy cartography and world building as a hobby. I haven't for about 6 month now as I finished a 18 by 24 inch map that was detailed and gorgeous. Instead of feeling accomplished by the masterpiece, i felt i never wanted to see another map again. This video was EXACTLY what i needed: i felt rejuvenated and went and did a map in MY simple style and it felt great. The stories jumped off the page. Thanks again, Nate.

Hello Nate, would you consider making a video on creating naval maps for a (fantasy) naval campaign? In this perspective inlands aren’t interesting, it should rather show shallow reefs, sunken shipwrecks, orca huntinggrounds, treacherous currents, fabled sunken cities. Maybe lighthouses with their signalpatterns and (natural) landmarks to navigate the seas. I’d appreciate any and all tips to convey this information visualy, since my current skills are limited to writing “here be sharks” on a blue background.

Just figure out how many hours you think it will take and how much you want to make per hour. I generally go for $30 to $50 per hour. But I'm a busy person, and already have a day job. I don't get many map commissions at those prices, but I'm pretty satisfied with just a few per year.

If you want to make maps, but in smaller amount of time. Why not try... Dungeon/interior maps etc? Smaller stuff like Cave-den of goblins, the spider cavern... a rodent den etc. Things that work in DnD but also isn't so tedious that you crash and burn.

I guess you were never a "sharing the journey" type of content creator, you're more like "look what I made" type of creator. If that makes sense...
