A bunch of Southern Rock bands did (it migrated to "jam bands", as well). .38 Special didn't ALWAYS, either (but the general line-up/most famous period) had a 3 drummer-synch line-up.

WOW, so this is a new one for me too!! (And, honestly, for probably nearly everyone watching this. I mean, who the hell has ever heard of Tycoon??)
I agree 100% with Nick's initial analysis: when the song started about 20 seconds into it, I was thinking, "Okay, this is a decent spacey intro." And then when the pre-chorus began and the guitar started coming in, I immediately thought Styx. The lead singer here actually sounds like a cross between Tommy Shaw and Dennis DeYoung. Unfortunately, he's not nearly as good a singer as either of them. He isn't bad, but he isn't great, either. Overall, the song is just okay to me. It's not bad, but so what? 🤷🏻‍♂️
I can definitely see why this band didn't make it. I wonder how many other albums they had? It couldn't have been many.
Anyways, cool on Ryan for picking this, but I have one major question to ask him at this point: HOW could this band POSSIBLY be a one-hit wonder when they didn't even have any hits?!?

  • @BuccWylde

How times have changed. When I was a kid, we used the phrase "Kmart (fill in the blank)" for a knock off or something cheap. There's probably at least 2 or more generations out there now that have no idea that Kmart even existed. It will be quite the change in 20 or 30 years when Wal-Mart stores are usurped by online shopping, where drones and/or AI powered robots can deliver your order within 2 hours. 😂

Never heard of this song or this band before. Unfortunately, it was very mediocre for me. But as soon as it started, I thought of Tubular Bells. 😊 The vocals never got off the ground and the music was too forgettable. But I agree with Nick, it definitely had a Styx sound to it, albeit a very poor version of them. (Nick, I am always amazed at your ability to identify the sound or influence of other bands. I rack my brain trying to figure out which band I’m hearing in some of these songs and you easily recognize it every time). I’m surprised that they even had one hit if this song was it.

This is definitely not a group that I can recall hearing before, but that may not be a bad thing. It appears this group may have only had 2 major album releases in its existence. "Such a Woman" appears to have just fallen short of top #25 status in America for the band's sole hit. Perhaps the most interesting note about this band, at least from initial research, is that its first album (which included "Such a Woman") was produced by the soon to be tremendously successful Robert John "Mutt" Lange. The artists and bands that "Mutt" Lange would be involved with are a veritable "who's who" from different genres since the 1980s up to the present. Some of these artists and groups include: AC/DC, Def Leppard, Foreigner, Michael Bolton, The Cars, Bryan Adams, Huey Lewis and the News, Billy Ocean, Celine Dion, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, and Nickelback. This does not include the musical work that Lange did with Shania Twain while they were married. As of present, "Mutt" Lange has been involved with a combined 5 songs and albums that have won Grammy Awards. So while it looks like Tycoon didn't hit it big again, their first producer ended up becoming one of the most successful in his field for the next 35 or so years.

    • @user-lq4qe7pj9s

Here is a fascinating piece of information regarding "one hit wonders." An English musician named Tony Burrows was the lead singer on FIVE different "one-hit wonders." 4 of the 5 came in ONE YEAR (1970). None of the "one hit wonders" were solo efforts, so that means Burrows was the lead singer for FIVE different bands that scored "one hit wonders." The songs include: "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)" by Edison Lighthouse, White Plains' "My Baby Loves Lovin'," "Gimme Dat Ding" by the Pipkins, " Brotherhood of Man's "United We Stand" (all 1970), and "Beach Baby" by The First Class. So if there is such a thing as "King of the One Hit Wonders," it would be awfully hard to argue against Tony Burrows. 😀

Given the limited success for this group, I wanted to look early to see if this song had somehow been sampled. Sure enough, there are at least 3 times that this song has been sampled (2005, 2011, and 2014). The songs are listed below in chronological order: "Rider for Life," Jim Jones featuring NOE and Max B; AWAR's "Van Sleazy Industries; "Grad Ne Jas" by Gospodal. Before anyone inquires, I just checked the community message board poll for the marathon and it does look like this song was suggested by at least one viewer/voter (Note-It wasn't me as I'd never heard of this group before this video was posted). 😂 So, hopefully that question will be answered up front.

Thanks for the reply, Danny. I guess it's all about who someone were to ask about the artists that "Mutt" worked with and when. I know a lot of the older kids that I grew up around would have told "Mutt" to retire after "Highway to Hell" and "Back in Black" because those were the pinnacle albums as far as they were concerned. For me, honestly, I can't hear or read the name Michael Bolton and not think of the film "Office Space." The first link above is the hilarious scene where the "Michael Bolton" character is questioned by a fellow employee about his name, only for him to then have to meet with "The Bobs" ("the corporate efficiency experts," AKA-The guys who decide who loses or keeps their jobs based on a short conversation), who are (yet again) tremendously excited by the name. The second link above is a spoof to those scenes done by Funny Or Die. I don't want to give too much away, but if anyone is a fan of "Office Space," it may be worth a few minutes of your time. Thanks again for the reply. 😀

I think you guys (in your review) hit-it-on-the-head, here!! 🤘🤘
This COULD NOT have been an (actual) "hit" (simply based-on the number of bands and amount of songs which were equivocal with this and better-written, at the same time!
This sounds like: "we missed the '70s, but we're going to pretend we didn't" / "I-didn't-know/understand-it-was-the-'80s-yet" writers/bands.
...of course: in 1979, 1980, 1981 ....NO-one, really, "knew" what "the '80s" were going to "sound like!" At all!
[O.K.: Except for, maybe: The CARS 😜🤘🤘 -They created that sound!!!!
...and, then: the NWoBHM [standing for: New Wave of British Heavy Metal (1977-1983 (approx.)] movement in Britain (who would be the inspiration for, not only the L.A. Metal scene (along with Van Halen and Ozzy's first solo band [The Blizzard Of Ozz])), but, also: directly, for Thrash Metal (which would take longer to come to the fore, slightly; but, also: would not solidify until 1991 (when Metallica commercialized their writing and took the full onslaught down a few notches to appeal to, more easily -& more fully!- appeal to the mainstream audience. -which, of course, itself, was, also, changing!) -But, anyway: yes: "the other half" of the '80s was: Metal/Heavy, Melodic Rock ...but that was FAR from "clear" or "obvious" in the first few years! 🤘🤘)]
They were guessing and trying to figure it out (without, what they felt would be "alienation the audience they had built" 🙄🙄 -which is, generally, a terrible way to go about thins - but that's a WAY, way longer, more-involved discussion!! 😜).
Tycoon sounds like: 45 other local bands you might hear, almost anywhere in America (or Canada!), around this same time!
...what I DO find interesting is that: Mark Rivera, the saxophone player, was in thsi band.
he went on to play on numerous '80s hit songs and became Billy Joel's "house player" (after Richie Cannatta left), for years!.
Rivera is, also, the guy who plays sax on Foreigner's "Urgent" (likely via the connection he made with Robert John "Mutt" Lange, on THIS album and who, also, Produced: Foreigner's 4 album (containing the "Urgent" single!)!
[Mutt, a shizzload of the '80s biggest albums!; Including multiple albums by: AC/DC (including Bon's final (Highway To hell) and their "comeback": Back In Black (made at Compass Point Studios!-which, sort-of, put Vo,pass Point "on the map" (for the '80s)!- as well as Def Leppard [the primary albums of THEIR career!] and (as already mentioned) Foreigner, among simply multitudes of others!]!).
Also I found intriguing that the original drummer for this band was: Richard Steinberg. ...a quality drummer, but better-known ans a label rep, etc. (later) and who was the A&R man for: KIX, in their "strongest period" (of their career), later!
Also: dual drummer bands, ABSOLUTELY,. exist.
They are most popular in Southern Rock and (later) what became known as "Jam bands".
I think the idea was kicked off with the dual drummer set-up of:
    The Allman Brothers Band, but the Grateful Dead, also, instituted a drumming duo (and were famed for their dual drum work!) as well as bands such as (mentioned elsewhere) Donnie Van Zant's [Ronnie, from Lynyrd Skynyrd's middle brother!]: .38 Special, The Doobie Brothers long had a dual drummer line-up (although, not from "the get-go");
a mess of modern bands, such as Tedeschi-Trucks Band; Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit...
...also, left-field bands like: Do. Make. Say. Think.; Godspeed! You Black Emperor! (often); the latter era line-ups [reboots] of King Crimson (in the '90s they had a dual drummer line-up. In the '00s Fripp went to his "three trios" idea (and featured 3 drummers, simultaneously!)); Arcade Fire, also featured 2 drummers.
...I am sure there are a bunch more. There are plenty of bands who have had more than one drummer, simultaneously, but, generally: they do not PLAY simultaneously!!
    ...oh: Hawkwind, in the mid-'70s, had a dual-drummer line-up.
Even James Brown (although: this was more of an "alternating line-up" -the drummers did NOT, constantly, play simultaneously ...except: sometimes, they DID! 😛😜
[This was the legendary MASTER combo. of: Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks (James Starks)! !]🤘🤘-)
...so: yes: there are numerous bands who have done this (not ALL to good effect!) ...but it is unique and takes a special type of coordination and understanding!!

O.K. I have, absolutely, NEVER HEARD of, either: this band
    OR this song!
    This is, essentially, "an impossiblity."
I have over half-a-century of. music listening, musical education, musical experience, experience as a player, most of my close friends are musicians, I have spent the vast majority of my life WITH musicians and music fans (of GREAT experience & knowledge!) and have spent UNCOUNTABLE hours: discussing, listening to and investigating music (in every form)!
It is nearly veritably impossible for there to be a band whom I have never heard mentioned, ONCE! (not even in some article about obscurity!!!!) AND who, then, have what could constitute "a hit!" 😲😲🤦🤷🤯😳
...O.K.: so maybe they're from another nation (one whose musical history I have not looked very deeply into 🤷🤷) - I suppose that's possible!
I guess more of the Sanford/Townsend Band-style "localized hits" (in a specific time-period, in a specific, definable region/set of regions in the country!🤷), likely, DO exist
(Because: unless you lived in Illinois, Wisconsin or Minnesota or other areas of the Mid-West, in the '70s
(or had friends there or a local D.J. who picked-up bands/songs/ideas from there!) ...it is EXTREMELY likely that you EVER heard that song, in the late '70s.
...There are plenty of people who STILL don't know it.
It was very big, but in an area localized to the band and to radio stations who were playing that song.
    Not the entire country.
---"In short" (🙄😋-🤭 ...yes, yes... I realize!):
this is, COMPLETELY MIND-BLOWING, to me!
    TOTALLY!!!!
    LET'S, F'in', GO; already!!!!

Thanks for the post. While I'm sure the guys will give biographical information in their intro, it appears that this band was formed in New York City. The group was primarily active in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Their two major record label releases were through Arista, a pretty significant company back in those days and it still continues today under the umbrella of Sony Music. Not only was the song "Such A Woman" a hit, it just missed out on being a top #25 record. The band's first album, which includes this song, would peak just outside the top #40 on the American album charts. Arista must have had some real hopes for the band's success as they actually had a music video produced for "Such A Woman," which may not have been a given for a group or an artist (especially a new one) in 1979. The link above is to the video for the song. As I mentioned in my other post, the soon to become mega-star producer "Mutt" Lange (who had just scored a top #20 album in America with AC/DC's "Highway to Hell") oversaw Tycoon's premiere album and only hit. After working with Tycoon, "Mutt" Lange would reach astronomical heights due to his work producing AC/DC's follow up smash "Back in Black" in 1980, which has sold approximately 50 million albums worldwide and recognized as 25x platinum. While "Mutt" Lange did not work as a producer on Tycoon's second album, the group still had a successful guiding hand in its final major label release. Vini Poncia would become the producer for Tycoon's second album. Poncia was best known for co-writing songs for The Ronettes and Darlene Love in the 1960s. During the 1970s, Poncia paired with Ringo Starr, co-writing and also performing on 5 of Starr's albums during that decade. Poncia further showed his musical flexibility by co-writing Leo Sayer's #1 song "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing." Poncia worked with Kiss drummer Peter Criss' first solo record and it was Criss that opened the door for Poncia to produce 2 albums for Kiss: "Dynasty" (co-writing the top #15 song "I Was Made For Loving You" with Paul Stanley and Desmond Child, who would also go on to write hit songs for Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Cher, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Alice Cooper, Michael Bolton, Ricky Martin, LeAnn Rimes, Carrie Underwood, and Katy Perry over a career that would see him be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame) and "Unmasked." While Poncia did not produce another Kiss album, he did co-write several songs on one of the band's late 1980s albums. Again, while Tycoon was unable to capitalize on the success of "Such A Woman," two very esteemed producers that achieved many further accolades in the future were a part of their team with Arista.

Thanks for the replies, Sonic Professor. I'm glad the info was able to help you connect the dots that you were looking for heading into this video. Honestly, I worked in commercial radio for over 10 years and different forms of broadcasting for about 20 years but I'd never heard of Tycoon (which, as I mentioned in my first solo post, may not be a bad thing). I don't want to ruin this for anyone, but I watched a short clip from the music video for "Such A Woman." Others can definitely disagree with me (and may not be wrong) but I kind of got a bit of a Styx feel on the music, a touch of Kansas with the lead vocals, and back to Styx to a degree with the harmonies in the chorus. Even if I'm off on those comparisons, the song was quite indicative of the "arena rock" genre that was taking hold in the mid to late 1970s in America and really exploding in the early 1980s. Thanks again for the replies.
