What a pleasure to encounter a contemporary conductor who doesn't follow the current fashion of overly fast tempi. Maestro Bychkov delivers Brahms, for which I am grateful. Excellent orchestra.
Merci WDR !
Bravo! Excellent in both playing (audio) and camera work (visual)! Of the many video versions (i.e., excluding audio-only versions) of the Brahms Symphony No. 1 available on UA-cam, this is my favorite choice and would highly recommend it over others. Actually, I was torn between whether to give this one or Bernstein's (Vienna Philharmonic, 1981) the number-one choice. Semyon Bychkov observed the first-movement exposition repeat (as did Bernstein). Bychkov's tempi throughout the entire symphony feels just right-not “overly fast tempi” of "current fashion," as another comment pointed out. (Note: Bernstein's is even slower than Bychkov's). Compared with Bernstein/Vienna Phil, this performance has many outstanding features; among them is the 3rd-movement opening clarinet solo (at 26:43). It is the clearest and most gorgeous I have heard for some time, including the subsequent arpeggio (at 27:08)-which is often drowned out by the orchestra in many versions I have heard. Overall, this is a majestic, beautiful, and powerful performance!
My only quibble with this performance is the tendency of this director (whom I otherwise do not know) to favor somewhat slower tempi; particularly noticeable in the first set, which has several tempo shifts directed into it, and the codas of the two middle sets, which he otherwise handles quite well as it seems to me. But let this not detract from my overall impression, which is very good. Technically also, this is a very good recording: the camera work is superb (especially in set 1), and the balance between orchestra sections is remarkable!, I've seldom/never heard the sections so clearly delineated without de-emphsizing the whole; it is obvious to me that this was a recording session rather than a live performance. In sum: thumbs UP! Thank you very much. JAT

Thank you so much. It's our pleasure!
Excellent ! Semyon at his best. Good tempo. So natural and unaffected music making..... even the naturalness is not being pointed at.
Thank you!
The execution of the final passages have become my markers of a good performance. He nailed it.
Absolutely divine performance. Thank you WDR and thank you Maestro Bychkov!
Thank you very much! ❤ Greetings from Germany

super!

The WDR Symphony Orchestra played the piece in 2002 and was conducted by Semyon Bychkov.
