I wish we had access to information from GG players and MLB coaches like this when I was a kid. Hopefully the channel keep growing and youth players take advantage of this knowledge getting passed down.
@@Joe_Konenfielding with one hand is something I was never taught and would get in trouble if I did do that. Yet that’s what Ron teaches everyone of his infielders
@marcuscastillo514 You can't get the ball like you need to with 2 hands. If it's directly in front 2 hands are fine but sides should always be 1 hand.
It’s not just the information. I’ve been coaching Baseball for 25 years. The information is great, but it’s more about the coach/player speaking the information in a way that average players can understand. That is the most valuable thing to me.
I was just watching this video thinking this is very different than how Matt Antonelli teaches fielding. I scroll down into the comments and there you are. I would love to get your perspective in a video on his approach compared with yours.
My experience with the one hand technique is that on perfectly manicured fields it works great. On a field that adds more unpredictability, getting in front of the ball and having that other hand there to secure it is a valuable skill. Great Video!
HS coach for 34 years. Just found your channel and shared this and your channel with my team. I really appreciate that you explain how and why you do what you do. Fantastic stuff! Look forward to seeing what else you share. P.S. I really appreciate sharing stuff with our kids from guys who are class act guys as well. Thank you! Good luck in '24! Go Cubs!
S/o the great Ron Washington. He's finally getting his credit for these infield drills that he created. So many players that have gone through the braves organization have really benefited from them. Salute dansby! One of the best SS in the game!
I do these exact drills with my 9 year old. I explained when he presses through to the sides it has to be one handed and made him use both to see how much it limits his rom. Great tip on telling kids to act like they have brace on the wrist.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, insight, and experience. I'll obviously never be a gold glover, but there were definitely tips here that I can apply to my own game.
Will be incorporating this at baseball practice, as I’m trying to become a better infielder. Even better when it’s my favorite player telling me information that I actually understand and isn’t to complicated. Thanks Dansby!
Hi Dansby , I’m a big fan of yours, and I was wondering if you could make a video on the mental aspect of the game , and how not to get in your head while playing. I think it could really help a lot of players , especially hearing it from an mlb player. Thanks, go cubs 💙❤️
Thank you for sharing this knowledge with the younger generation of players. This is one of the best ways to keep the game alive. Best wishes in your’24 season, Dansby!
Yes! I'm getting back into baseball as an adult after not playing since highschool, and I took a couple private lessons to brush up on fielding. Emphasis everywhere has been 2 hands, which makes sense from a fundamentals standpoint, also b/c although I'm comfortable 1-handed teammates and adult league managers have side-eyed it since I can miss some bad hops. But this video and my own experience do these Ron Washington drills have really solidified that 1-handed is king and just depends on having those good habits down (stiff wrist, eyes + arm + glove through the ball, and just drilling proper muscle memory technique). Definitely can play faster and more athletic with 1-handed fielding.
Very good was teaching my players this just today.in your final on field drill where you attack ball i do suggest you dont flip your wrist at point of receive. Just have glove down.
Awesome demonstration of what you try to accomplish and thought process! Would love to see how you work balls you have to take angles that are deep to your left and right
Life long Braves/Cubs fan here. Flew from Alabama to Chicago last season to see the cubs play. Wrigley Field had always been on my bucket list. My daughter is a big fan of yours. Had to FaceTime her when you got up to bat. She was happy.
What I find cool about this video is Dansby Swanson and Troy Tulo are complete opposites. Dansby talks about catching the ball with one hand while Tulo always emphasize just stoping the ball while using 2 hands. Just find it cool because you need to find out what kind of defender you are and just work on being the best you can. Love you Dansby ❤❤❤
They're using some of what Wash teaches but not everything. If you watch the Ozzie Albies/Wash video, it's two hands when the ground ball is in the middle, and one hand to glove side or backhand. Albies fields balls in the middle with two hands -- to each his own. At the end of this Swanson video, watch his footwork as he opens up the stance slightly on ground balls as he fields them which opens up the glove slightly and creates a bigger pocket. The best in the game work on stuff like this everyday.
Baseball is amazing. We teach wrist looseness in The Caribbean. Stiff is bad for us. Both systems work obviously, but you can see the fielding style is more fluid or graceful on Latin players.
Playing the outfield in senior slow pitch softball, I make these running "ice cream' catches on flies from all angles, I get admonished by an occasional infielder in the dugout, one of the old pros..."young man, two hands"......I am serious but my face is about to crack a smile. No one ever tells two hands to shortstops or second baseman
regarding in-between hops: the normal approach is to pivot back to receive the ball at a better spot in the arc. As a little league coach should I ditch teaching pivots and train players to be more aggressive?? obvs we're talking fast plays only I'm guessing.
I think it's best to incorporate both approaches into practice, and to explain why each approach is correct in certain situations (in this case, the speed of the groundball). This play calls for quick decision-making too so don't be alarmed if kids aren't consistently making these plays off the rip. In little league, building confidence is important, so if your team has trouble staying in front (or attacking) the ball, then go ahead and throw some of that practice in there. Nothing wrong with having multiple ways to solve the same problem. Hope this helps :)
Dansby, I just wanted to know your preference on how you wear your glove? Two in the pinky or traditional? I recently went to traditional in order to shallow my pocket and I love it. However, the backhand pops out of the glove religiously.
In a video with What Pros Wear in 2017, Dansby said he's a traditional guy and never uses two in the pinky...looks like he goes straight up with the index finger out
hi im ur great fan in korea, i have question! is there any difference between fielding beside left leg and fielding beside right leg?? i think fielding beside left leg is more comfortable
Honest question here; in the last video of yours I watched, you mentioned that all the great defensive plays are made with one hand. If thats actually how you feel, then why practice with the flat pad? Doesn't that reinforce that players SHOULD be getting their throwing hand on the ball right away, or essentially making a two-handed catch?
I have been waiting for video on these infield drills from Dansby for like 7 years. I loved the video with Ozzie and Wash but I’ve wanted to see the gold glover himself do the drills.
Ya and time and time again at College and Pro levels of softball and baseball....players reach out to tag runner instead of bringing clove and ball to the bag.... recently witness College girls softball 3rd basegirl reach out to tag and runner was safe...caused team out of regionals...
i think there is WAY too much "thinking" involved with sports now. just develop a habit that works for you and catch the damn ball. theres a million batting stances that have worked for professional hitters. theres no right or wrong way to hit a ball or field a ball. what matters is your consistency in your craft and getting the job done. all the little details are BS. there are PLENTY of pro's that go "against the books" of fundamentals in a way. repetition is everything. a player who studies youtube videos of "lessons" for 2 hours a day rather than taking 2 hours of grounders will be left behind. what works for this guy almost never works for that guy. what works is practice. period
