Here's the answer about the title, it is indeed spur. シュプール comes from the German word spur, and will be said a bit like shupurru. The German word means trace as in a ski's path through snow.
Yeah, shoot is totally wrong. Yet "shupūru" is pretty different to "spur" which would be translated as "スプル" which is weird. Maybe it's a mistranslation from the dev team or it's the way japanese translate that word.
@@ttora yep it’s the way the Japanese translate the word. It kinda makes sense when you hear how Japanese is pronounced and how that relates to the phonic sounds of kana. Although it won’t sound too much like spur to an English speaker at first as it has an initial sh sound.
I went through all the trouble of googling the title screen and figuring out wtf a シュプール is and writing up a long post explaining it, and then before I hit reply I scroll down a bit and see you'd already done it all with more information and 1/5th the text 😭
here me out... a ff6 spin-off game where we follow cid through his skiing career up until some sort of tragedy that stop him from competing in the olympic games and leads to him joining the empire
Even _Mario Kart_ was arguably a clone of _F-Zero_. It took the core Mode 7 racer concept and then expanded on it with a larger roster of characters and, most crucially, the addition of weapons. We owe a lot more to iterative development than we do to completely original, untested ideas.
Using mode 7 for the track isn't exactly a revolutionary idea. Using it in another game isn't cloning the first one. Otherwise, you can argue that Road Rash is a clone of Pole Position and every polygon racer is ripping off Hard Drivin'.
Interesting and unique for a racing game at the time. I've never heard of this one before. It actually reminds me of the _Snowboard Kids_ games on the N64 where you were raced down a mountain, but still had items similar to Mario Kart. It is kind of funny that Super Mario Kart started the trend of racing with items and, yet, even the modern versions in the series offer less customization than many other games in the "kart racing" genre.
Snowboard Kids was the game we all played at my house. Mario Kart 64 was great, but there was something about Snowboard Kids that we all kept going back to.
If nothing else this looks pretty interesting and unique. Yeah it's mode 6 and I'm sure number of games did this if not tons at the time but there are some interesting aspects and I do like the look of it. I mean what could it hurt to play this anyway I can.
Good to hear from you again! Hope you’re doing well, thanks for sharing another game I most certainly never would have heard of let alone seen. You always feature such interesting material. Best wishes
I get the feeling that the team was given a very tight deadline on this one or they ran out of space. I imagine that outside of whatever prevented the US release (production capital, SNES coming to end of dev life) this game is forgotten due to poor execution or high ambition. Not all racers can be Super Mario Kart or F-Zero, but they can all make ghost data time trials a selectable feature. I think the choppiness comes from the size and variety within the stages. Super Star Wars Mode 7 felt pretty fast, but there's practically nothing going in in terms of level design. Mario Kart reuses a lot of assets to up the track count, but a lot of stuff is different placement of background objects, and the courses themselves are very short.
This game appears to use tricks to make the tracks not appear totally flat 😮 all the GBA mode 7 games were totally flat. Im really impressed with that.
This looks pretty cool. Glad they added features. If someone else has done all the work on the foundation, there's plenty of time to experiment up top.
I've never lived anywhere cold enough to where you could go skiing. The southeastern USA isn't known for much snow. Lol. more like 90 degrees in February.
Mine country doesn't have snow either and once I went to Chile and tryed it. I made sky class and I was the only one who did not felt. I was thinking I was an ace. Then I went downhill on the montain and couldn't make a single curve without falling... Or even a straight line. I felt like 50 times. Some 6 year old kids passed around me several times, making fun. I had to pull of the skis and walk to the end and felt pain for several days. It is so much easy to ski on videogames...
This game looks really fun, im gonna play it when I have the chance. I'm maining the banana guy. Language trivia: waku waku is used when you are excited for something to happen, that's why there are a lot of games with it on the title, like for example Waku Waku Seven, a fighting game.

Leave it Snes Drunk to keep digging up unknown Super Famicom games most of us never even heard of! Good job, man! Human apparently love to add the edit your character feature, huh?
There seemed to be far more games in Japan that used mode 7 than ones released in the west they really seemed to embrace it more after the early days of the system where it vanished for the most part everywhere else.
Don’t feel bad. I use to snowboard a lot in the early 90’s. I still skateboard daily, so I thought I could still snowboard. I went to a ski resort a couple months ago and couldn’t move for three days afterwards. Every muscle in my body ached. I mean it actually hurt just petting my dog.
This looks awesome, I'll definitely try this one, thank you again for your great videos, anything thats like Super Mario Kart, I'm there, even if it's flawed, and maybe that is Cid, now we know where he went, you might've started a game theory right there, lols just kidding 😂.
I found the most hidden of gems.. Warriors - Legend of the Blue Dragon. Crazy that Gamefreak made it then just made pokemon games for decades. Never was one for racing games, unfortunately.
I halfway expected to hear that this one's a combat racer because the characters are all doing biathlon, so you just stop and pull out your rifle to shoot whoever's in your way.
Have you checked out Snowboard Kids or Snowboard Kids 2 for N64? Fun Mario Kart 64 clone with added features like upgrading your board with the in-game currency. Only rented the games from Hollywood Video(a competing chain against Blockbuster). Laps are done by having a ski lift at the end of the track and it takes you back to the top to do another run. Now onto my real life snowboarding. It's been years since I snowboarded, but I hella enjoy snowboarding for sure. In my part of Northern California it only takes maybe about 4 hours to get to Lake Tahoe which is a border town that you can clearly tell which side of town is the side in Nevada because of all the casinos there, but anyway Heavenly Ski Resort is a wonderful place to go snowboarding. I once suffered a concussion when snowboarding, but I was able to snowboard again later. The concussion was because I got ignorant. I didn't fall once so I decided to speed up and then I lost control and fell backwards suffering serious whiplash. Who knows how much worse it could have been without my helmet.
Hey, you have an incredible amount of content. Any chance of getting some kind of retrospective or top five lists that I absolutely have to play for any of these systems? That's kind of a jumping off point? I never owned a SNES as a kid I was Genesis girl.
It's like Super Mario Kart or F-Zero. If you want somwthing more like actual skiing, Snowboard Kids on N64 is good. It was on Playstation in Japan too.
Bit of semantic nonsense here, but isn't Mario Kart technically a clone of F-Zero? Sure the SD graphics are new, but Mode 7 racers technically started with F-Zero. Great content as always.
I wonder if this is in the same universe as the Arcade Fighting game Waku Waku 7. Probably not since "Wakuwaku" is just to be excited about something in Japanese but who knows
I might have to play this game any way I can.
And then you might just have to have a great rest of your day 👍

Iterative development...nicely done!
I had an advisement for skiing in Lutsen Mountain in Minnesota prior to watching.
Can we talk about the physics of that race world with a circle track that always goes downhill? MC Escher would be pleased.
....it's not a circle track though. Where are you seeing a circular map or even a lap counter?
Oh, my bad, I just totally assumed it was. I must have got that in my head when the Mario Kart comparison was made.
