  • Jump onboard with myself Adam Chiristodoulou for the start of the Classic Nurburgring 1000km, inside Prosport Classics Opel Kadett.
    Chris Esser from Prosport Classics was kind enough to invite myself and a few other to join them for a race at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, but this time it wasn't in anything modern like their usual Porsche or Aston martins, it was in Chris' own 1978 Group 4 Opel Kadett, The plan was also to race in the 1986 240 Turbo Volvo, otherwise known as the Turbo Brick, but unfortunately the turbo blew the turbo bolts off the engine causing some pretty impressive flames out the exhaust on lap one which you will see me overtake in the Piff-Paff section of the Nordschliefe.
    The Opel Kadett was a real eye opener, we only had one lap each to customise ourselves to the car in qualifying hence going quite a bit faster in the few laps in the race, I think we managed a sub 10 minute lap which for something 43 years old was pretty impressive.
    Watch as I get a good start avoiding all crashed, but also avoiding getting it into the correct gear half the time.
    Look forward to hearing your thoughts, and enjoy the video.

    Tombola machine for a gearbox. Is that a gear? Nope. How about now? Nope. Now? Ok.

      Haha just a bit. Every gear change I just prayed it would go in to the right one. 😅

      It can't be easy going from a GT3, with paddles to a three pedal car. Must require very different techniques.

      Yea was a little shorter lived than we hoped, but the classic cars are great fun.

    Damn that looked fun. Older cars are so engaging to drive even when they're not mega fast 👌

      I had so much fun in this thing, had a great battle with the Porsche for P11.

    not sure how fast this Kadett is but it feels fast :D good sound on it too.

      It felt fast, but maybe because classic cars never go in a straight line. 😅

    Great footage Adam, also great to see you put the old Opel through it's paces! Nice challenges with others on the track too!

      Yea was a fun challenge, just getting the thing in gear was had enough, never mind navigating around other cars.

    Easily your best video yet Adam. Camera views showing your feet working three pedals and where you are looking are interesting for a track day driver like me. Question; so, you blip all the down changes in the Opel, but in your Oulton, Clio video you don't, how come?

    • @AdamChristo
      @AdamChristo  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you, yea that was a bit more luck than skill with the camera positioning. Well spotted regarding the downshifts, so it’s easier to snatch the rears on a RWD car whilst downshifting because all the weight is over the front, you see this at T3 on the first lap, when I struggled to get it in gear then the motor revs were far too low Vs the road speed causing the rear to effectively lock. In a FWD car whilst braking you have all the weight on the front wheels, so you can get away (be lazy) with re-engaging the clutch slowly without it really effecting the front too much. If you can heel and toe efficiently then you should do it, if your technique isn’t great then sometimes it can be more of a hinderance.

    I see him on the clutch pedal mid corner and "trail braking" the clutch on exit. Is this racing technique? Or am I just tripping? Example: Hedwigshöhe 27:31

    Why do you guys never listen to music while you drive? When I raced I always did, even sprints.

      😂😂 I guess you’ll lose that extra sense. Less chance of hearing the tyres squeal, or an unusual engine noise.

    Massive thanks for posting that Adam (and team). It's always fascinating to see the relative speeds of cars around the combined circuit. Loved the on-the-job training with the gear-change! It clearly does /not/ like to be rushed. Was that a terminal oil/water issue we overheard that stopped play? More Kadett time would go down a treat. Thanks and good luck.

      Glad you enjoyed the video, yea you need patience with the gear changes, and as soon as theres any steering the shifting becomes a bit of a gamble. Unfortunately from day one the water system kept on pressurising, the engine got sent back to the manufacturer and informed us nothing was wrong, but they were incorrect sadly. Look forward to hopefully driving it again soon.

    Looks like great fun. What are the cars specs, looks like quite some power ;) Also shows the imense advantage of a sequential gearbox ;)

    • @AdamChristo
      @AdamChristo  2 роки тому

      Ahh man the gearbox was killing me. Apparently they've removed some of the rubber mounts now so its less of a gamble which gear you might be selecting next time. We believe it has around 250bhp.

    Why did you say “no” when you saw the slow Volvo with flames coming from it’s exhaust on the first lap? 🤔

    • @AdamChristo
      @AdamChristo  3 роки тому +1

      Because I was double starting so also racing in that one in the same race. The turbo blew the bolts off the mounting. 😫

      @@AdamChristo the other car was easier to drive? In any case the Kadett looks bloody fast for a car this age. At the same time it really shows how much race cars have developed if sou compare this to a GT3!

    • @AdamChristo
      @AdamChristo  3 роки тому +1

      @@DennisfromMunich yea I liked the gearbox more in the Volvo turbo 240 but trying to keep the car in the boost range wasn’t easy. Was interesting waiting for it to wind up before all hell broke lose.

      I remember seeing a video of Walter Röhrl's feet in the Quattro, constantly blipping the gas under braking to keep the Turbo spooling. Sounds like a brutal and archaic experience! So happy that you are sharing this!
