I was hiking near a city in Austria, and there was a Muslim Syrian immigrant in his 30s whom I met there. He is an engineer who immigrated to Austria in 2015 and got his Master's degree in a University of Applied Sciences there. When he found out I'm not from central/western europe ethnically, he started opening up and told me he would slap his child if it said it was "Austrian". He'd tell the child it's Arab, Muslim, Syrian. I later saw on his linkedin page that he's an anti-Israel guy (surprise). Anyway, even more educated muslim immigrants have questionable ideologies.

@anchormax3597 you're absolutely right. At the beginning of the Hamas-Israel war we saw hundreds of videos of mostly socialist and Muslim people tearing down the posters of hostages. So many of them were university students, so many of the muslims/Arabs who were caught on camera were actually educated, among them doctors, who work in cities with a relatively big Jewish population.

What was wrong exactly in this case, I failed to grasp it? His children are Arabs born in Austria I presume, so isn't he correct? He can dislike any country , especially considering historical animosity between Syria and Israel (most Ukrainians now are not too keen on Russia obviously).

The difference between refugees from most of the world and refugees from Muslim countries is that the non-Muslim nation refugees may practice their values in the privacy of their own homes, but they understand that when they step outside they need to respect the values of their host country.
Muslim nation refugees think their host country needs to adapt to their Muslim values whether inside or outside their homes and end up bringing the very thing they were fleeing from with them to their host countries.

I can't help, but share my story: I was a student from republic of Moldova, requesting for German student visa, in order to explore German language and make up my mind wether to switch faculties from physics (which I didn't like) to foreign languages. At the embassy, they treated me like I was a potential prostitute and they denied my visa. I was upset, but at the end of the day, I told myself that it was fair, that they didn't want foreigners into their country. Later on when I started seeing whom they actually started allowing coming into their country, I was shocked. Moldovans are Europeans. Most of us have higher education. We display quite a humble attitude, despite of our serios facial expressions. We are hard workers, adaptable and grateful. Why in the world was i denied and discriminated and why syrians were welcomed with money and hotels?
Later on I reclaimed my Romanian citizenship and could travel without visa (yeah, I didn't want to humiliate myself by going again to that embassy). And boy, what a horrible treatment I got from regular Germans: whenever they heard my accent, they would rudely tell me that I was a foreigner, who stole their jobs and that I should return home. Every time I had to justify myself that I was just a student, exploring German language.
So the fact, that I was having a summer job, where I was exploited working ridiculous amount of hours, I never dared requesting allowance or hotels. I paid my taxes and worked my ass off, so that my German colleagues would give me attitude, telling me to slow down, because they felt too lazy to work as hard as I did. Now you chose those, who never wanted to work, but live on your taxes. Are you happier that they "don't steel your jobs"?
I guess for now, being home, I should continue my popcorn and enjoy the show. You chose welcoming those guys, have fun! Soon, I'll see you praying 5 times a day or paying "jizia", cause you're not of the right religion.

The wars in both countries is horrific, let's get that straight. People being displaced by a war they didn't ask for is horrible. Having said that, Ukranians seeking refuge in Poland and other Eastern European (mostly Slavic) countries makes sense because these Ukranians have a lot in common culturaly, religiously, and linguistically with those countries. To draw an equivalent would mean that Syrians are seeking refuge in one of 21 remaining Arab states. Except that's not the case. My country took in both Syrian refugees back in 2012-2013 and Ukranian refugees in 2022. You can't spot a Ukranian in a crowd. They work, they learn the language, they assimilate or at least respect the societal norms in the country. Meanwhile, the Syrians refused to assimilate, they don't bother learning our language at least to a basic A1 level, they don't really seek work. Instead they lived on the backs of a country with an already strained economy/welfare system. I haven't heard of a single Ukranian entering our country illegaly. Meanwhile to this day, our border police keeps catching illegal migrants that come in through Syria > Turkey. Which isn't to say that this applies to ALL Syrian refugees but those that cause trouble give everyone a bad name.

I’ve met Muslims here in the UK who are great but I’ve met many others, too many, who have an appalling attitude towards women, other religions, gays, the West, basically anyone who isn’t a Muslim, which is just below the surface. I used to be very liberal and non judgmental but it literally applies to 2/3 of the Muslims I’ve met.

If true, someone who converted to Islam, admits that she partook in crimes, and by all measures is a radicalised Muslim, is saying that they are many others out there who consider her too moderate. And I wonder if those radicals there are also trying to get back into Europe.

I think it is important to have nuance immigration & asylum policies where some nations & ethnicity required more filtering. In principle we need to treat everyone equally but in reality, these culture speaks the volume. Muslim immigrants from Pakistani, Arab, Bangladeshi, Afghan and African background tend to be tribal with their authoritarian social-religious culture entrenched with antisemitism. Not all Muslims are the same. Iranian & Kurds on the other hand are more likely to embrace Liberal Democracy as they opposed to authoritarian Islamic orthodoxy & orthopraxy. This may sound like generalization but this is exhibit of the real world where different ethnicity & culture were ingrained in different ways which required nuance approach to refugee policies. Diversity can be strength if it was done with ppl who can embrace free society & diversity. Not dominant culture that attempt to replace Liberal society.

The Ukrainian women are making a dazzling addition to the dating market over here in Switzerland. Earlier I was single and talked to some of them. However, it was often a bit shocking. One Ukrainian lady had been working as a waitress in France when the war broke out in Ukraine. She then “fled” to neighboring Switzerland as we also speak French here and the conditions were more generous. In Switzerland she took some time to relax and travel as the work in France had been stressful.
Many of the women have exactly one child (often named Olga) but they did not have a man to go with it even back in Ukraine.
Everyone I met was from Lviv or Greater Kiev. There was nobody from an actual war area like Donbass or even Odessa.
I feel a bit bad for Ukraine as we are taking away their women and they will never recover from that.

I’m from the Balkans, but live in Switzerland. Back in my native country, we have many Ukrainians from the war zone - some left with only a backpack. 99% are all women, children and elderly. I’ve only seen a handful of young men, but they had 3+ children and were excluded from the draft.
      It’s terrible.
They are working and integrating, but a lot of them will probably never get to go back to their homes.
The delay in military aid was a huge mistake. While politicians were debating whether to sent military equipment, thousands of young Ukrainian men perished. 😢
