You make some excellent points mate. I seem to take involuntary breaks from IG but never more than a couple of days. Usually go from being really into it to feeling like I can’t be arsed to “play the game” but still feel somewhat forced to post and comment with some sense of FOMO or being placed last in the algorithm. 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

Doesn't IG do an amazing job of keeping us on the platform? Everything is geared towards stoking those little impusles of FOMO, or competitiveness or whatever. It's all far cleverer than we realise. Really glad you enjoyed the video, and very much appreciate the feedback, so thanks!

Like the other comments below, I think you just nailed exactly how I feel and exactly how I act towards and on Instagram. It's a strange one for me, IG wastes so much of my time but it also pushes me to go out and take photos, but I'm always thinking, is this good enough for IG and so on..... Brilliant video mate 🙌🤣

Thanks so much for watching Bryn. Mate, I have to say that you are probably the most consistent supporter of just about everyone in the Bristol IG scene. It must be exhausting, but I've always been immensely grateful for that, and I'm sure a lot of others would say the same. I guess when you're enjoying it, you use it however you want and it's all good, but when the frustrations get too much, it prompts us to question the way we're using it - or what it's doing to mental 'elf.

So many great points in such a short video! I can relate to most if not all of them - and I think I need to watch this again tomorrow so I can digest them properly :)

I honestly couldn't ask for more than to have genuinely been helpful, so I'm just really pleased you and others can relate. I think a lot of us are in this boat right now! Wishing you all the best navigating through it.

Great video Sam. Think you've hit alot of things I've been feeling about it too.
The sincerity thing is a good point. I think I try and respond to as many photographers as I can, but you're right in that this can lead to alot of meaningless interaction when you drop the inevitable 'great shot' comment due to time. I always started using IG for the community, but may have lost of that along the way slightly 🤔
Very thought provoking videos so far.

It's a tough one to navigate I think. And it also depends on your IG goals, and the type of account you have. Certainly for us photographers, we can get swept up in the whole concept of 'growing an audience' and 'progress' - I forgot to say there's nothing wrong with that at all. I think it all depends how it's affecting you at the end of the day. Really appreciate you watching, James, and thanks so much for the feedback.

Hi Sam, what a great vlog! you’ve just (very eloquently) put into words exactly what I’ve been experiencing with Instagram for the past few months, it’s almost like you’ve been reading my mind! We already follow each other on IG (Martin - me.photographics) and you may have noticed that I’ve been on a bit of a break myself, I haven’t posted for a couple of weeks and just dip in now and then to make a few comments. Going forward I’ll definitely be adopting some of the approach you’ve suggested for the way I use Instagram in the future. I’m also on 500px, in fact I was using it for quite a while before Instagram. I don’t interact with the community on there very much though, I just use it as a high res showcase for my work. It will be interesting how the next few months pan out with our fresh approach to Instagram. Keep up the good work on YT, I’ll look forward to seeing your next production 👍😊

Thanks so much for watching Martin, I'm really pleased you enjoyed it! I've noticed a number of people (yourself included) taking a break recently, not just me, so it made me think that, yes, there's probably a lot of the same kind of fatigue going on. Someone said to me that they'd recently thought about this stuff and made similar decisions, and how very freeing it was to not feel obligated to post, like, comment etc. and to just use it how you want, without worrying about the 'growth' stuff. I'm certainly going to try to operate like that (how long it lasts, we shall see! 😂) I'll try and find you on 500px! PS: hope you didn't mind me using your profile in the last video - I really meant to reach out and check with you, and then I'd posted before I remembered! Big fan of your photos.

Completely agree, I stopped commenting as much because it just felt like admin back patting. I can rarely be bothered to post at the moment because of lockdown fatigue and therefore my engagement with everyone else is probably a lot lower. How are you finding it now you've added UA-cam into your social media admin? Our channel became a pain to keep on top of!

Apologies for not responding sooner, Jim. I think if anything, I've learned that if you feel like you believe in your work and are excited by what you're producing, you're generally more motivated to get involved with social media. But if the platforms aren't giving back what you feel you're putting in, it's just time to ditch it and find something that does work. Everyone works very hard for Instagram with very little reward and no-one seems to question it!
I'm excited to start creating on UA-cam as it will push my creativity in more of the direction I want to go. Also enjoying 500px as more of a photography centric platform. Although I think my initial goalnofba video a week was a bit too ambitious right now. Might have to build up to that!
