I have a Ricoh GR III on order and I really hope it ships before I go to my next concert. It’s a smaller show so I’m hoping it won’t attract too much attention. It’s not like I’ll be popping a flash & I am eager to try out snap focus, so I won’t have to worry about the autofocus searching. I always take pics with my phone, from where I’m standing & this will be the 1st time that I purposefully take a camera to try getting some shots worth printing
Last week I made it to shoot for "The Paper Kites" in Berlin at their soldout gig in Berlin and it was the 1st time I got a photo pass for a concert as a freelance photographer and it was just awesome! I use to photograph local bands who are my friends and this one was my 1st proper one and I'm so proud of it! Can't wait to do more and maybe one day I'll be able to go on tour which is a huge dream of me!
@@mleachphoto i can't wait for it! Especially for a woman like me who is young (22) it can be hard sometimes because often I don't get seen as a "professional". I am still practicing but have already my shows and bands I shoot on a regular basis for and I'm so happy with it!
Great video! I needed this 2 years ago. I just got my first pass for Amon Amarth at the Aragon Ballroom. It was definitely a wild experience. Especially since I found out I was getting it 4 hours before the show started and I was about to head on a 2 hour drive to the city without my camera! I had never shot anything near the magnitude of that show before, so I can relate to your nervousness haha. Definitely learned a lot and had a lot of new elements to deal with and things I need to work on. I just found you on IG and really enjoy your work and definitely got my sub on here, cheers my friend 🍻
Really good video Marc. As you well know, I’m at that stage where I’m starting to shoot touring bands, but it’s still the smaller bands and venues. Really pushing to get more experience, but as you know yourself, it ain’t easy. I’ve never taken the approach of contacting bands or PR companies directly, so that’s maybe something I can look at, but it sort of feels like I’m going behind the back of the publication that’s been giving me opportunities.
Excellent insights! Back thirty years ago as a teen I worked as an assistant to Ross Halfin and Neil Zlozower in LA. I learned loads about lighting band portraits and rubbing elbows with execs, but I never could nail down how they got paid. I helped Ross with the Def Leppard shoots for 'Adrenalize' in '92 and I do know they reimbursed him for expenses (hotel, transpo, meals, rentals, per diem, film, lab fees, etc) but I don't think he got a day rate. Are these pros paid per shot used by the band mgmt only? Does it become a licensing scenario? It's very confusing because I think it all depends on where yo are in your career. Thanks and subbed!
Exactly, and people like Ross were on the same boat too. Getting regular payment etc can take time, I know many of photographers who have grinded hard! But thanks for sharing your story ^_^
Do you know if I have to be under a publication to be approved? I'm debating if keep looking to be a contributor or just send it as a freelancer with my portfolio
I kind of do a bit of both. Not all shows allow freelancers, so having a publication is handy. But being freelance and doing your thing isn't bad at all!
Just photographed my first arena gig yesterday and loved it!
Nice one!!!

Loved this video man, had my attention instantly! 🙏
Aw thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed

Are you under a publication, I'm a concert freelancer as well and I'm debating if i can go in sending emails with just being a freelancer

Never stop pushing dude, the worst anyone can do is say no!
Great video mark 👍🏻👍🏻
Aw thanks Richard!
This is all great information but how do I get a multi pass.
Ginger wig and we will talk
@@mleachphoto hmmm maybe of you treat me nicely

Depeche Mode Chicago last night! Was amazing with 9 other great photographers. : )
Niiiiice! I'm sure they were worth snapping
Can you sell the same photos youre selling to the publication to the band? (Double dip)?
Yes and no. Most of the time it's generally okay, providing you clear with the publication. Other times (like signing a release) you can't.
@@mleachphoto understood, thank you Sir

@@mleachphoto No problem.
Can you imagine buskers requiring payment before playing?! Yeah, it's the equivalent of asking for likes and subs before you've done A-N-Y-THING
Um...okay?
