Been shooting shows a little over a year and I promise you all of these tips work! I've tried all of them! Thanks Jake for creating a video like this to help photographers shoot their way into the photo pit!
I am only a sophomore in high school and my dream is to shoot shows. This was very helpful! I will start to work on building a strong portfolio so when the time comes I can get a photo pass.
So as a semi-professional photographer (it isn’t my main source of money), I’ve only shot shows at small venues and even then very rarely. I decided to try different things this year. As it turns out, one of my all time favorite artists is playing a big, non-stadium venue. I’ve loved Tori Amos since I was 14 and i desperately want to shoot this show. So I’m trying my best to figure a way in there.
I've had the incredible luck to take pictures of my two favorite bands already: Blackout Problems 3x (alternative rock, super energetic shows, singer loves to run and climb all around the venue lol), and Enter Shikari once (alt-rock too, insane light-show and visuals, crazy pits), where I won a raffle for a photo-pass last year, and I hope I'll get to shoot for both of them again. 🤞🏻 My utopic daydream is to photograph BTS or another big (=many members) K-Pop group someday, because they usually have shows with big productions, lots of dancers and choreography, many different outfits, detailed stage sets/props, the fans often have lightsticks that interact with the music.... so it provides a lot of interesting and stunning visuals.
shoutout to corona for killing my concert photography grind ✌️ i had like 7 photo passes and an internship lined up and all that’s just in the trash now,, i hate it here
I was about to start shooting for the Boston Celtics , fell through along with my other opportunities, just keep going and don’t let up dawg , it’s a marathon not a race
Shooting for free is great in the beginning. But, you have to get paid at some point as you enhance your portfolio. Not an easy task to get paid. Building a relationship is essential to opening the door for paid opportunities. Do not chase money in the beginning of your music photography journey.
Forreal though, thank you for this video Jake! You don’t realize how much you’re actually helping people reach their dreams and just thank you for sharing your tips and tricks and not keeping them for yourself lol you’re a ✨REAL ONE ✨ take care!
Rad video my guy! This was a great video and can say a lot of these methods have worked for me. If I could shot any artist on this blue planet, it would def have to be Jon Bellion. I could die a happy baby boy after that. Who you wanting to shoot right now if you could man?
Thank you for making this vid! I work in sports and film rn and music has definitely been different to navigate. This info was awesome I’ll try these out!
Finally maybe I don’t have to use my phone to take pictures thanks jake you’re the best! Honestly I would get to get any photo pass it would be a dream come true. Thanks for teh good advice always!
Hehe...thank you. Gotta wait 3 more years ish to kinda do stuff like this. And again you’re the only reason why I want to become a photographer...like seriously no joke😂 hopefully I can keep this plan going :) thank you Jake once again!!!❤️
Thank you so much for sharing these tips with us! The next question would be how do you proceed if the guy you talked for free access to the event wants you to participate as a photographer at the next festival, do you go again for free? Ask for the correct amount of money for the festival? Can he complain that he helped you in the beginning?
I would love to photograph Adam Lambert concerts, it would be my dream job. Right now I am trying to build my portfolio since I can’t go anywhere. I’m 17 and have big photography dreams❤️
Hey! Thank you for the great advice! Could you make a video on your music photography camera gear? I'm thinking of purchasing the Fuji xt4 would love your thoughts. Do you think that's a good camera for concert/music photography?
I’ve snuck a camera into a few shows before & then the one time I actually adhered to the fixed lens rule for the 1975 security wasn’t going to let it fly until another guard came over & was like “I literally don’t care, let her in” 😂
I really want to start taking more photos but I don't have the money to get a camera to shoot and practice photography:( I'm sure I'll get there some day! My dream artist to shoot is probably Panic! At the Disco or Imagine Dragons!
Thank you guys so much for watching! Hope these tips help.
Imagine being front row and no one trying to break your ribs

Were you able to do it?
@@elixstrations7147 unfortunately no. Couldn’t secure a press pass but I’m not giving up.
