About:
Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
We document our life on UA-cam videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

Good quality daddy/daughter time❤
This vid has been live literally less than an hour, and someone's already downvoted it? Bitter much? These folks are SO COOL!!
@Samantha Jane Gardener yes, they are always out there, just the nature of UA-cam,,thumbs up from me!
Don't take it personal. By quantifying the posts with dis/likes it does make it seem like another addition to popularity like subscriptions. But really it is for the channel owner. A dislike vote could be the style was not liked, the music was too loud, there was no CC option for hearing impaired, the person prefers DIY instructables from Jason more than walk and talks, etc. It is there for the content provider to make adjustments to content, or see what their audience likes. It doesn't mean they dislike the content provider or the people that like the person. Really UA-cam should hide the results of the dis/like button and only let the provider see it. Views are not a good gauge because many people have on auto play or click based on the title then do not finish the video.
Hi..... Jason and Lorraine and Penelope nice to see you all thank you for sharing your video homestead chicken farmer garden 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 👕🐔🐓🐥🌱🎥👍👍👍
Such a fun "day in the life" video!
Hello Beautiful Souls!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful talents, family, joy for being, ... your passion for living and doing your best at what you are called to do, ... . Did you know that ... you make this world a better place being you and sharing what you do. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! 💫✨🙏💜🎆
Love that Penelope winter her own house plants! You guys are such a sweet family thank you for sharing
It's so fun watching your videos as an Asheville native and still here watching and recognizing where you are...lol
I've never been to Flora's before and will now check it out.
I also hope to finally go by your retail space soon as well. I've had my eye on the mountain wall art you do for awhile now.
Another great video-
I do miss my Gals (chickens) I think I need to hug a chicken a day. When we had chickens and my daughter Karin was young she used to wheel them around in a wheelbarrow.
Lots of love from Australia
Marty
I've missed you guys ❣️ glad to see you all happy and healthy 👍😄
Great video. Had me smiling several times with hen hugs and plant buying and tongue snowflake catching. A little of everything. :-)
That is like when I switched to LED bulbs from florescent bulbs. "And the Lord said, Let there be light!" I always like that bit and yes I know there is more to that.
Hug a chicken! LOL Henny Penny didn't want any part of that. Too bad the ducks are so skittish, I love holding them and softly stroking their feathers. SOFT! Good luck with the plants Ms. P!
Hi guys. We visited your store in Asheville on Saturday hoping to see you there. We will be back.
I still remember the first time I grew broccoli 🥦 the whole family wished we had tripled the amount we had planted because it was sooooo good Nice plant store 😎
Love watching all your videos! 👍🏻😘😁
Much❤Love ❤&
🙏🏻😇🙏🏻God Bless
I like how the whole family gets involved. Your wife is a hoot.!! So funny
We so much love how y'all live and love one another stay awesome all three of you thumbs up my friends
Love the fresh Broccoli 🥦 Penelope is so pretty 😍
I so enjoyed your happy video today! I need to order a mug.
Tell Penelope to be careful to not over water the racoon planter if it doesn't have a plug in the bottom for drainage. Might be best to just mist it heavily every few days. The other plant needs to be transplanted into a larger pot soon so it can take off and not get root bound. Remember the pot needs drainage and good peaty houseplant soil. It should be evenly moist and watered once a week.
Both plants will like bright, but indirect light. No direct sun or they'll fry!
Ever time I see snow think of it as fluffy rain lol. Yummy im glad you got the broccoli growing have a great day ❤❤
We got our Hey Bernice shirts today!! I bought five so I can include my grandbabies in wearing them. :) They feel so good.
I have read to not harvest the frozen produce. Right call Lorraine.
👍
I am so envious of your weather. Here in midwestern Ontario the ground is covered in snow and has been since the beginning of November. We can't even get to our garden. We grew 8 broccoli plants last summer and they gave us enough to last all winter. Leave the plants in the ground and they will keep producing - much smaller heads but oh so good. Every time we picked we would eat 1/3 fresh, freeze 1/3 and dehydrate 1/3. And yes it has lasted all winter.
Nice plants Penelope!! Take care ya all 💕thank you.
You guys are getting soaked. Watched Justin yesterday, he has a big umbrella and the kids were in rain gear. Glad Loraine had some time with the girls, and you and Penelope had a good time. Ducks don't like hugs? Thanks for sharing.
Fresh Broccoli is the best. I never liked it as a kid, but now I will.
Great job Jason and family !!
❤️💙💜 Can’t wait to see the new table finished! 💜💙❤️
wow Penelope..I have over 50 plants and I don't even have a pilea..hope your plants do well..can't do ferns. Love how funny your chow down clip was..you guys looked hungry..lol
Those two tables you brought in are really nice. Thanks again for sharing your adventure in life with us.
I have relatives in Hendersonville and got to visit them once. Drove through Asheville and wished we could have stopped and shopped. It looked like a really cool town.
There is a great plant store in Asheville called Rose’s Garden Shop, 211 Charlotte Street. It has a tiny parking lot but it is amazing!! I’ll check out Flora next time in Asheville!!
Hey, Bernice! Home grown broccoli is so good. Nice new kitchen table and great tables for sale in the shop-they look like end table size. Thank you for this update.
yes, end tables. thanks for watching. we really appreciate it!
I love your videos. The homestead life is the best.
I’m loving your day in the life videos! Lovely family!
Jason, you have...... a have a beautiful wife and daughter. Happy Valentines to them.
You should try snacking broccoli. They get small ones you can eat raw while working or take a batch in. They grow year round here in S Calif...but best in winter. Leave some for seed and replant. Kale, curly kale, dinosaur kale, purple kale too.
Thanks for taking us along!💕
👏👏on your first broccoli in NC..
Have a good day ☃️☃️☃️
Cool video & so glad Penelope got her plants- I am going to try to grow broccoli here during winter so cross your fingers for me please. Cheers Denise - Australia
As far as the chicken hugging is concerned ... I have a chicken that jumps into my lap for a stroke and a pat when I sit in the yard, get over it they are just like any other pet, they love attention.
How often does Penelope get to interact with other kids her age from like minded households? Her hair is so long and healthy! ❤️
What fun you all have❤️💙
Asheville is such a cool place! i go back as often as i can.
I just came in from picking broccoli. I love to eat broccoli leaves while I’m in the garden. More tasty than many traditional salad leaves.
Thank you for another fun and informative video...Spring is on the way!!
I am glad to see another happy video from you guys. And, you are almost to 70K subscribers. Woo Hoo! 2020 is looking to be a great year. Best Wishes. Grandpa Jones. 😃
the creek is a blessing..consider putting in a little micro hydro power turbine..hydro power is more reliable then solar
My experiences is ... get more plants☺️ One or two on their own don’t do as well as several. Not sure if it’s because they like company or get the right amount of attention when grounded to get her. And don’t over water. Success!!
Loved the video!! Penelope I love your plants ♥️
Best plant and easy to care for indoors is a pothos plant, love your plants Penelope!!!!
Really enjoyed your trip. The plant shop looked wonderful. Thank you for sharing. I loved the snowy scenery today as well.
Another wonderful video! Will definitely check out Flora next time we're in Asheville.
really neat shop! thanks!
This was fun thank you for taking us along love ya'll
thanks for watching Vickie
Loraine is officially a crazy chicken lady.😜 Welcome to the club!💕
Always wait to pick until it unthaws while still on the plant, it will go bad and wasted if you cut it when frozen. The same is true for lettuce and spinach, and other crops!
Yes, Brocoli is best eaten raw....or just slightly steamed ...when you cook it too long , it loses some of its nutrients..it s a wonder drug...very healthy
I take the positive. When I clicked the thumbs up there was 1k. Gotta love this family.
thanks Paul!
Wow it’s crazy seeing how frozen your water is! I’m on the other side of NC and have only had to break water for the animals once all winter!
You guys are such a nice family.
I love Bernice! She is so beautiful .
Maybe you can try a stir fry with broccoli leaves (treat them like if they were collard greens) by sauteeing them in some butter/oil/lard with garlic, onions, cubed bacon/chicken/beef (optional) and once half-way wilted, add ⅛ to a ¼ cup chicken stock and cover for long enough until they wilt completely and serve as a side dish with any protein of your choice (beside the broccoli leaves or mixed into them) or put them on top of white rice (with the meat of your choice in it or beside the broccoli atop white rice or even brown rice). Tell me how did you like it if you get to try them. That's another way of using your broccoli plant, not just the flower.
Something else would be to add the stems of the broccoli, medium diced into your rice water once you add the rice and some chopped parsley for a green rice. Just some of the things I do with my broccoli plants here.
*God Bless You Guys in Jesus' Name!*
What a fun family day. Thanks for sharing with us. Just curious - what is the name of the other plant with the round leaves called? Looks interesting!
Nice happy fun video, thanks guys! :)
2 people thumbed down because they dont like chickens being hugged.
hahaha,,chicken haters maybe? I love chickens and hoping to get some more one day soon
Just beautiful
Great video, love you guys. Wish I could go to your store, it looks so pretty 🐓
Wow, 1.5" frozen thick! Would the eggs be frozen too?
Yea broccoli! That dinner sounds so good!!
A little hint about house plants. . Many people tend to OVER water them. Thus the plants literally drown . I also want to over water.
So I mark on my calendar when to water . I water the plants no more than once a week. When I get the urge to water I check the calendar. Nope , it's not time yet ! I stick to the calendar. It's the only way I can keep from over watering the plants.
I also grow citrus here in northeastern Ohio . Yep , I grow them in large planters that are on plant bases that have wheels. In the living room for the winter in front of both east facing and west facing windows. When it gets warm enough they are wheeled outside onto my deck. Be careful ! They WILL get sunburned until they become accustomed to having sunlight. And yes , they will fruit. There are no bees inside of the house of course so I pollinate with a small artist's paintbrush. Which does work. So far this year I am growing some lemons and tangerines. Although it does take months for the fruits to mature. Lemons can have both fruit and blossoms at the same time. I keep the trees pruned so they will not get to be more than six or seven feet tall.
Once again , do not over water. Citrus thrives in the ground in places like Riverside , California which only gets eight to ten inches of rain per year ! I give my citrus about an inch of water once a month . Outside during the summer here I actually have to cover them so they do not get too much rainfall .
...my fav family! 💚 Yeah broccoli!
Spider Plants are great for beginners and are hardy .
Great choices, Penelope!!!
Just had to get my fix of the disembodied hand pointing and saying, "Hey Bernice!"
We have never had a house plant last long. It's a combination of us and our cat eating all of them.
Cant wait to rock your sow the land shirt i just ordered, love this channel guys!
awesome!! thank you!
I love your channel. I did have a question about justin rhodes channel...why do they call their youngest 'Mr.Brown'? Thanks for sharing
*GOOD MORNING FAMILY GOOD JOB YES CALIFÓRNIA*
I've been soaking black beans, for chili, but I'm so doing your habpaj dish! Not sure how to spell that.
Another great video ya'll
Great video!!
Indoors: the Jade plant is a succulent, it will grow slowly and large, easy to care for - check online.
don't expose her plant too much!!!!!
Jason you need to ck out Land to house where this guy shows you how to build a pump that requires no electricity or power except the water flo so you can water your animals and garden.
jason you can put a ram pump in the creek and pump free water to the garden
have you done it?
great video!..i am traveling up to your area, from Florida, in September and would really like to meet you all..how do i contact you to see if this is feasible? also, got a great suggestion for your hill..create steps out of it by cutting into the soil...
probably can't tell but we do have steps carved in the hill. You might catch us at our shop. :) thanks!
Healthy food, yayyyyyy
Love this video!
Ducks in the creek.....would they go down the hill to the water, if they had a ramp to walk down? With a sprinkle of feed on it to entice them.
maybe, but it would be sad if I spent all that time building a ramp and they didn't use it. 😆
Hey there fam love watching your videos here in ohio, big inspirations! Jason what kind of boots are you trotton around in the creek? Looking for a nice sturdy pair.
These boots bit.ly/39mXJbh thanks!
That place used to have a art supply store
Charlotte from Ky. 😀
It is time to build a water wheel and a ram pump for the spring!
have you built a water wheel before?
@@SowtheLand A very small one for a pond in a friends back yard as a water feature but free plans are on the Internet.
@@SowtheLand www.machinerylubrication.com/Read/1294/noria-history Build a Noria and water the whole garden area and all the animals...
typically, when a plant has frost you can hose-spray it to save it BUT BEFORE THE SUN HITS IT.
Pick it all.
Are yall going to dig out the creek and polar plunge like the rhodes?
does polar plunging my feet count? 😊
Hmmmm idk ask Justin Rhodes and see if feet count lol
Sow the Land, it’s a start. Baby steps.
🙏❤️🙏
U need a fish tank heater for your chicks & ducks (water)
Personally I like to tickle the chickens (scratch their necks) after I hug them. They like the scratch more than the hug.
💚🌱💚
Your broccoli looks good
😍😍😍
A table four years in the making? Oh I know you grew the tree yourself. lol
Need some clear plastic over your row covers so you can grow all year:)
we have been growing year around with this setup. thanks
Liked and commented for algorithm.
