Yeah it's always had naturally small leaves which is just down to the genetics of the tree. It means that it's a much slower grower though. Probably around half the speed of development of a standard oak
The good thing about going for the wire bend first is you can still go for the removal option if you look at it later and decide it isnt really going to work longer term. Cheers Tony
You've got some bends in that tree now! It's amazing what angular movement was in it naturally, it looks great now. I eventually got enough courage to wire a branch that has always been in the wrong place on a Picea Abies yesterday. I twisted it round into the right position, and the whole tree looks miles better. I doubt I would have done it if I hadn't seen you do so much of it, so thank you!
I would have never imagined such a move to be possible with a straight, thick branch, you showed. Awesome 🥰 Please follow up on that tree 🙏 All the best and enjoy your day 😘 Cheers 🙋♀️ Martina
Hi Martina. I've done similar bends in the past so I'm very confident that it will hold its new position by the spring, but I'll ask my dad and nephew to update on this tree in the spring 🙂
Must admit that I was holding my breath as you torqued on that branch - didn't realize that one could actually bend such thick material without taking drastic measures. Definitely improved the lines of this gorgeous collected tree - really happy you were able to utilize the branch in the final structure!
Thanks Sue. I'd be telling lies if I didn't say that this bend felt close to the limits of what can be achieved with a branch like that. I was definitely prepared to snap it although I'm really happy that it maintained its integrity, and when it sets in place I reckon the tree will now be much easier to style
Like you hawthorn is one of my favourites, you did a great job on this, mine had 5 branches coming from the same place so have reduced it to 3 so now needs to heel. Like the movement you've created in this. Keep growing.xx
Nice job Mandy. They heal slowly but providing we allow them to grow they do sort themselves out over time. Five a couple of years yours will be looking a lot better
Nice work Tony another tree wired it will make a great tree in time like most of your work it’s for the future development of the trees, it’s having the foresight to see where the trees are going to be in maybe 5 years from the point of collection. Take care my friend.
great project !!!...if your wire was wound the other direction it would not have opened up as your turned it,,,clock-wise twist right an counter clockwise twist to the left...just a thought,,,very much enjoy all your films !!!
To be honest,I would have removed the branch, it's too thick for where it is located on the tree. I do love the way the trunk moves in such a natural way, looks really good.
My thinking is that it can easily be removed down the line if necessary, but now the option is always there to use just the lower section which will have some nice movement in it.I deliberately over bend branches like these because it allows me to remove the wire earlier accounting for spring - back of the branch. I've yet to regret bending a branch like this on a hawthorn, and as the shiny bark turns crusty and the bend settles in, I think it would will look much more at home within the composition of the tree. That's the plan anyway
Interesting choice. Since this flagpole of a branch is thicker than the others and you are not using it as an extension of the main trunk, would it not have made sense to eliminate it completely?
There’s nothing like watching you bend a tree! Nice fix on that branch.
I love just going for it buddy
Now, that oak has really good looking small leaves! Cheers Tony! Rock on brother!

Who does that, who bends branches that much….Tony does! You’re the best mate, love you mate! Keep up the good work.
🤣🤣 you know me mate. I see a straight branch like that, and I just can't resist 🤣
Happy you're still turning out content, Tony! For being such a hard wood, hawthorn can take some amazing bends.
Indeed I'm always surprised when I can bend it with it being so naturally hard and brittle
Tony's bonsai are the best! I will see you again!😊
Thank you Tokyo 🙂

Yeah nothing is set in stone that's for sure
That tree would look cool on my new pot Tony. That curve is exactly what the rhino needs a tree like that.
Great video mate 👍👍👍
I'm looking forward to seeing your rhino creation mate. It's going to look wild!

Brilliant! It's a great feeling when our plans for a tree come together. You'll really enjoy removing the wire next year too.
That made a big difference Tony
Thanks Brian. As the branch matures and the bark develops some character,it will look a lot more at home I think

Im happy with that too Tony, awesome 👏
Thanks Nerina. This one was quite the challenge, but I just had to have a go!
Lovely job, love hawthorns
Very nice Tony
Thanks Jason

Well thought out manoeuvre Tony and not a SNAP decision as I thought. Only a bonsai master could get away with such a drastic bend.
It was quite drastic, but I felt like I had to do something with that awkward straight branch
Overall the video was good. Nice play on movement. Cheers.
Thanks Mark
Nice one Tony, thats a cool hawthorn. I love this species
Me too Bradley. I would say they're definitely my favourite along with birch

Thanks Joe, yes this was definitely a move to improve the tree in the 5-10 year range
Looks so much better now. I was waiting for that branch to snap though! 😂
Me too. I think it was close 🤣
That’s going to be awesome. I was waiting for the crack though. Boom!
🤣 you were not alone mate. I pushed this one really close to the limit I reckon
Nice!!!!! the suspense :)
I like to keep you on your toes!
Don't know how you bend like that Tony. I'd be left with a detached branch in my hand!!😂😂
great project !!!...if your wire was wound the other direction it would not have opened up as your turned it,,,clock-wise twist right an counter clockwise twist to the left...just a thought,,,very much enjoy all your films !!!
Yes I agree. Well observed!I was just happy being able to apply such relatively thick wire to the branch
Great tree. You do love a bend a thick branch challenge 😆
Sometimes a branch is just asking for a bit of chiropractic adjustment ,🤣
Love it 👏
I always get tense when you start bending stuff!
Really thought that would snap 😂 was holding my breath 😂
I like to make sure that your heart is in good working order mate 🤣
@@TonysBonsai cheers mate 🤣

Added movement, this branch Will now contribute towards the overall structure of the tree going forward
I would've given it up as a lost cause and removed it completely Just goes to show if you have the vision, anything's possible. 😉
Yeah it could well still be removed but there are extra options available now at least
