Crossing a Beaver Dam to Hunt Ruffed Grouse!

- It's early November, the leaves are down and I'm crossing a beaver dam to hunt ruffed grouse. This is a spot I've known about for a few years, but never hunted it. In hopes of finding some unpressured birds, my Brittany Yeti and I, crossed the dam to hunt the other side.

This hunting is not for real dog people
Then what is?
@@UplanderLifestyle @wasghintonstatedogtrainer I am also curious what hunting is for real dog people, please enlighten us.
Hey , it is your job to make video content that real hunters and real dog owners can make sense of , and only at that moment can it become good content !!!!!! Stop posting you and your little dogs walking Thur so called north woods ( grouse woods ) and videoing small alders bushes , and that’s air the viewers / content you can see .... stupid stuff ....
Lol and congrats you win the stupid comment prize of the year. Nice trolling. Grouse are the king of game birds for a reason. Requires a special dog.
YOUR A IDIOT @@sawyerplume3321
Enjoyed the video by November you can tell what birds have been pressured for sure. The hunts will get tougher and as they do only the real grouse hunters will still chase them as hard as in the beginning. Keep up the great job Cliff.
Amen, thanks Gary!
Hey bro just a tip. I always carry water socks in my truck and a pair if swim trunks for crossing beaver ponds. It's lightweight and works great. I usually get across, change out and carry on. Typically as I'm changing out a few grouse I didn't see flush on me 😂. Great video as always. God bless
Great idea!
Crossing a beaver pond in socks and swim trunks in November...now that will shrink the boys!!!
@@jeffmertens9790 🤣🤣🤣sometimes it does.
Awesome video, Cliff! Looks like real hunting for real dog people to me! 👍 keep it up
Thanks man 👍🏻👍🏻
You're right, the first week of November is amazing. Same with the first substantial snowfall, where birds haven't learned they stick out like a sore thumb quite yet. Love the videos, keep it up!
So true! Thanks for the comment and following along man 👍🏻
My wife would say "dip the front tires in and floor it!" That's how you cross by the beaver dam.
Ha! It probably could be driven across. Just not trying to put my mode of transportation in risk of something happening in the middle of nothing.
Prices way up on beaver fur .. they are making stetson hats out of them. Probably going to get hammered this winter
@@UplanderLifestylepull the dam if there's brook trout in there they will school up in front of the dam go on feeding frenzy.. beavers dig holes in front of the dam using the rock and mud in the dam .. what we do for living damage control trapper.. beavers will fix the dam that night after you take limit of trout out
It is a road flooded by the beaver dam. You drive across it. Simple. That's how your cross to the other side. Your truck will not flood.
I'm happy to see that you didn't end up with any leeches stuck to you 😂
Western UP normally that first week of October is peaks as the leaves fall starts snowing . Moves east each week.. our lew setter will start flushing them at us if they won't hold.. same thing on pheasants we shoot plenty flying at us .. see picked that up running with our lab .. she will normally bump the first one can tell she adjusts herself almost like she's disappointed it flew off .. happens again she will circle out front of them.. things are hard to hit flying at ya thou . Bell helps hold the birds causes them to hunker down.. was talking to guide in the st Helens area about the bell hes convinced hit helps hold birds .
What's the guide's name in the St. Helen area?

@@russbatzer6970 I forget but I'll see him Saturday morning.. he has website. I know he's a big time fly fisherman
November is my favorite month to be in the woods!
The warm weather, bugs and leaves are gone!
Nice to see some grouse woods. I haven’t hunted them since college days 68 to 72 in Athens Ohio. No dogs buddy and I would just walk the woods stop every 10 yards and they would flush a lot of time being nervous. And I always leave my chest waders in the truck just in case! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the comment and following along! Hope you had a good trip earlier this year.
@@UplanderLifestyle great six weeks - four in Montana and North Dakota
I’ve heard it referred to as the “crazy time!” Like you said, the birds don’t fully know the cover has changed so they do what appears “crazy” for this normally clever prey.
I enjoyed watching this one. It reminded me of a similar adventure I had last year here in Northern MN. Basically an old tote road had become washed out due to a low grade next to a swamp, making it impassable to the ATV/UTVs that usually used it. I was compelled to walk around the swamp 1.5 miles to the other side where an old logging spur awaited. I kid you not, I flushed 50+ birds that day WITHOUT A DOG… Great video
That’s a lot of fast action! Thanks for sharing!
You can breach the dam and the water level will fall for a few days. Beaver will repair the breach in no time
Inflatable kayak in the future?
We do have a kayaks and I really considered bringing one for this.
What chokes are you using I have the same gun
I love hunting in late October and early November because woodcock are still there depending on the weather this year they left because we got snow but i bid get 2 it makes things a lot more fun to have something in between grouse regardless I had a lot of fun and I got four grouse
Great time to be in the woods! Good luck the rest of season 👍🏻
Sooo...what's up with the fresh tire tracks? lol
It’s pretty hard to not find them in most places. I didn’t say it was completely off the beaten path. You can access it from the other side by a trail, and private borders it as well that people can come from. Coming from the other side was a long drive out of the way, its much tougher to get to. I’m sure some side by sides and off road vehicles could pass through the water as well. I did run into a guy trapping beavers on the other side, but I didn’t find any sign of bird hunters.
Looks like a nice spot. Saw some vehicle tracks on the road, so somebody is getting back there some how or somewhere???
It’s not totally off the beaten path. There’s another way to get in from the other side, but it’s a long drive that you have to go way out of your way to do. No sign of other bird hunters. I did run into a guy trapping beavers.
I’m planning on buying my first shotgun for hunting, would you recommend a side by side or over and under?
I really like how the sight picture on a side by side looks when I pull up. It feels like my eye is just naturally attracted to the center between the barrels. The best thing to do is handle a few different guns and see what you do and don’t like about them.
Well done..Hitting grouse in thick cover is not easy.
Definitely some tricky shots!
what is your shotgun /braned
Weatherby Orion 20 Gauge
What after market antennas are you running on your gps collars?
I got them from Double U Supply. The Garmin ones were breaking on me in the grouse woods. I’ve had these for a few years no more breaks.

Thanks.
Do you keep all dogs in a outdoor pens???
They all live in our house.
Hunting is usually nice this time of year in NF land if you can avoid all the deer hunters setting up .
Same here, lots of deer hunters this time of year!
Before I even get into it….my money is on holy grail.

turn camera off.. strip...walk across get dressed... turn camera on lmao
Last week there was skim ice (or more) on all the water in northern WI and likely the UP. I'd beat my way through alders before taking a dip in 30 degree water any day!
Ha, next time, on opening day when it’s warm too!
Not unless you want to end up with leeches on you 😂@@UplanderLifestyle
LOL !!!!!
Thanks for the view and engagement 😉
Rabbit hunting may but not not real bird hunting
Please, what is real bird hunting?
@@larryslade4117 not walking down a road , WE CALL THAT ROAD HUNTING YUPP !!!!!! And making videos for money on UA-cam , that d show anything , is like taking a pi tha5 doesn’t come out and showing people but they say what is it we can’t see anything !!!!!
@@WASHINGTONSTATEDOGTRAINER thanks for your reply, even if it was a bit difficult to understand. Your grammar, spelling and overall poor sentence structure (or lack thereof) speaks volumes. I also noted that you seem angry that this young man makes money on UA-cam. Could that be because he actually has subscribers to his channel and you have none? Road hunting, by the way, most generally refers to people who drive vehicles down roads and shoot at game from said vehicles…not hunters, who, on foot, shoot birds over a pointing dog. You have as much knowledge about bird hunting as you do subscribers to your UA-cam channel….again, none.
This comment stinks of someone who has never grouse hunted the north woods. The equivalent would be making ignorant comments of Chukar hunters in the mountains when I have never done it.
LOL
