    I originally played the SNES version and one part of the game I think was MUCH better was when you’re sent to Mist, the king didn’t give you a bomb ring, it’s just an innocuous package, and is just called “package” in the inventory. It make it a lot more shocking when the bomb burst out, and better contextualizes Cecil’s reaction.
    They keep calling it a bomb ring in newer translations, which is a real shame. It gives it away

Arguably FF6 is probably a better title overall, but FF4 is still my favorite just based on the story and my nostalgia. Also a bit weird in that I had a NES for many years but never played the NES Final Fantasy until much later on, so FF4 is the one I always go back to.

    Funnily enough, while this is undoubtedly a good game, I played FF4 and FF2 around the same time as each other on PS1 (I'd first played FF6 on the SNES, and of course already played FF7), and actually ended up enjoying FF2 more. They're definitely built a similar structure to each other, but I had a lot of fun customizing my FF2 cast with some early game grinding to make their stats and abilities fit different rolls so they'd continue to develop in those direction over the course of the game. And only having one rotating guest party member felt like the perfect balance of that kind of style, so you still had a core to work off of. Also, FF6's cast rotating felt better because it was typically a result of different parties going on different adventures instead of the main character constantly gaining and dropping traveling companions.
    ...FF4 feels like a D&D campaign with too many scheduling conflicts, the DM having to come up with more and more outrageous excuses for the party members to get split up and swapped out (which has it's own comical charm, but gets tiring with all the fake-out deaths, like it was specifically intentionally aping FF2's actual character deaths all over the place thinking about it after the fact). I actually kind of dropped my original FF4 playthrough mid-to-late-way to play FF2 to completion before returning to finish FF4.

    There is one detail every single remake of FFVI fails get right, including this one. In the original version of the game during his scriped battle, Golbez (and Zemus later) take almost no damage from the Fire3, Ice3, etc. That's why Tellah gets desperate and casts Meteo, which goes through his armor and does a full 9999 damage to him. Every single remake they've done have missed this detail, so while the combat dialogue conveys this, the actual numbers you see do not.

    I'm glad you liked it. I've been into RPGs since I was a kid back in 1990. My first was Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior in America), which led me to Final Fantasy. The first Final Fantasy really clicked with me and was a big jump from the original Dragon Quest. Final Fantasy IV (FF2 in North America) was groundbreaking. It's hard 30 years after it's release to communicate how big of a leap forward this game was in terms of story and character development. It might seem primitive by today's standards, but Final Fantasy 4 was the first console RPG to have such emotional impact and focus on the personal growth and internal struggles of it's characters. Before FFIV RPGs would give you direction such as visit ___ town to speak with ___npc who tells you to explore ___dungeon to retrieve ___McGuffin in order to proceed to the next sequence.

      I think they first try to do it with FFII, but that was hit or miss with II, IV definitly perfected what II try to do story wise.

    • @acidwizard6528
      @acidwizard6528 Рік тому

      @@nesoukkefka1741 FF2 had a little more narrative depth than the first, but it was greatly limited by the amount of data available on a Famicom cartridge. Several characters join your party under various circumstances in FF2, with a couple dying during key story beats. These moments as well as the ongoing saga with childhood friend Leon are the highlight of FF2's attempt to create a compelling story IMO. Final Fantasy IV was able to make such a large leap in this regard mostly due to the expanded capacity of the new console. The Super Famicom could support games that took up megabytes of data compared to Famicom titles that topped out in the kilobytes.

    I've only played the North American SNES release - the version in which the difficulty was decreased for North American gamers at the time. I enjoyed it for the most part but had a lot of trouble on the last two dungeons. Is the Pixel Remaster based on this easier North American version, or the original Super Famicom/GBA/PSP difficulty?

    • @sunderwire
      @sunderwire  Рік тому +2

      It’s based off the original SNES version but Pixel Remaster games have some tweaks/adjustments make the game feel a bit more modern, so they’re kind of their own version

    • @Christofisgood
      @Christofisgood Рік тому +1

      I beat the pixel remaster of IV a couple weeks back. It is definitely more of a challenge than the US SNES version. Lunar Subterrane and the Crystal Palace are fairly challenging in the early 40s. What I did was take multiple runs to clear out all of the chests with the end game gear (enter the dungeon, fight every single encounter, get to a chest, fight the monster in the box, equip the new gear, teleport out, buy up all the elixirs I could afford, repeat). It took a few play sessions to do over the course of a week, but about midway through I was strong enough to use the cursor memory, auto battle, and auto battle continuation settings to turn off the brain and just use a map guide to get to where I wanted to go without paying much attention to the actual random encounters.

    The mechanics are solid and while theres no job system in place each character has their own strengths and weaknesses and thanks to the designers you always have a balanced party. But what really sets this game apart is the story. Even though it gets dark( very dark sometimes) you build up emotional investment in each character. Even the simple charms like your spoony bard running and hiding every time he gets hurt gives the character depth that connects the story to the gameplay. While you loose some characters and spoiler save most of them in the end. You still see how the world is changed by your actions and how those you cant save impacts the story.

    For me its the best in the entire FF series even without the nostalgica glasses, since i indeed played it in 1992/93 on the SNES as my first FF.
    It has the best story and story is king in Final Fantasy - or lets say, it had the best story that i would enjoy and have fun with the kind of stories i like and prefere.
    In which FF was the protagonist also the evil guy? And which game you know had a better redemption story? The first part of this game is just a masterpiece in story telling and it does not even needed CGI.
    Also, only here you meet Golbez who is basicly Final Fantasy's Darth Vader and closely releated to the protagonist of the story.
    Very enchanting music scores and world building, very fast combat, too. The best game, every year.

    I appreciate your playthrough! I'm glad you finally had a chance to play through the game. Watching this playthrough makes me long for the original SNES FF2. I played that game A LOT as a young teenager. The one thing I miss from the SNES version was the original translated dialogue. It was quirky at times, but I thought it added to the story quite a bit. I felt that the cleaned up dialogue of the PR version takes away from some of the experience of the original. They took a lot of liberties with the updated dialogues and dumbed down some of it, which is unfortunate. I was especially upset that the PR version messes up much of the dialogue leading up to the final battle, including the second most iconic line in the game (behind "you spoony bard", of course), where Cecil in the original proclames "Zeromus!... for all the people of earth... I will destroy you!" The PR's rendering of "Zeromus! I won't lose! I...can't!" is extremely weak compared to the original. Also, as mentioned in other comments, toward the start of the game in the PR version, the king gives Cecil a "bomb ring", which kind of gives away the secret! I liked that in the original SNES, he just received an innocuous-sounding "Package", which then "automatically opens" as soon as he and Kain enter Mist.

    Honestly - the extra dungeons and content in each of the games that had them were pretty bad. They were clearly tacked on and added little to nothing to the experience. I don't mind that they didn't port them. Like in FF1 on the GBA - even with a patch that brings the game balance more in line with the NES, you can either have a balanced experience through the main story or you can become ridiculously overpowered by doing the side content while it's relevant. In FFIV, the extra dungeons come so late, and the inability to change party members was clearly not part of the original design - I understand if people are bummed about their exclusion and prefer versions of the games that have the extra content, but if you haven't played FFIV before, the Pixel Remaster is the way to go. (That or the 3D Steam version.)

      It’s the pixel remaster version, it recently released on ps4 around 6 months ago

    The PSP remake is the best of both worlds. The upgraded script, lovely graphics, and stunning music, but without the punishing difficulty curve, annoying busywork of dealing with Augments, and the godawful voice direction in the cutscenes.

    FFIV is not the best Final Fantasy, but it would be the one I would highly recommend being someone's first Final Fantasy

    Question: Final Fantasy IV has Lunarians in it? I'm kind of disappointed buying the 3D remake because they didn't include the extra campaign. Now I have thoughts buying it or not. I'm just here for the Lunarians.

    • @sunderwire
      @sunderwire  Рік тому +1

      Yeah you meet one of the Lunarians when you go to the moon and he explains their purpose

    • @sheridandwyer
      @sheridandwyer Рік тому

      When you're talking about the extra campaign do you mean The Lunar Ruins or the extra story sequel? Because if you're looking for the Lunar ruins unfortunately it's only available in the PSP port The Complete Collection and FF4 Advance. If you're looking for more information on the Lunarians themselves, I can confidently say The After Years 3d version should fulfill your craving at least in part as they are featured more there. Hope this helps!

      Yeah, I really like FFVI as well, but then there is VII, VIII, IX, X, and XII . . . it's hard for me to pick, because I enjoyed them all so much. I think XII might be my favorite, but I really haven't played some of the others in years, and I haven't played FFVII Remake yet . . . though it is in the que.

    I never played FFIV on SNES back in the day so I don't have any nostalgia for it. I've gone back and played the GBA and DS versions over the years and found them... fine? The game being so rigid on party composition just and limited customisation just makes me feel like I'm mashing the confirm button for 20 hours. And the byzantine augment system did nothing to help that.
    Square more than fixed that in FFV though, oh boy. Slaps you with all the job customisation you can handle in the early to mid game. If you want to play an optimised cheesy party of bluemagic wielding rapid fire ninjas, you can. If you want to roleplay suboptimal thematic classes for each character, you can (Galuf is clearly a mystic knight who can use Gaia. Faris is a Theif who can summon (Syldra!), Butz Redmage/bard, Lenna is a Whitemage/Time Mage) or just use whichever sprites look cool (Lenna's monk, Kriles beserker, Butz' dancer etc). You're always making choices and adjustments that really matter.
