I was fortunate enough to see your performance of this in Olympia, WA last weekend and it was truly inspiring. Definitely one of the top musical experiences of my life! Congratulations on all your success and for raising the bar for percussion music and composition. Bravo Andy, and bravo Sandbox and all involved in bringing this to life!!
Wow, Sandbox! I’m blown away. Seven Pillars is some of the most captivating music. I love all the timbres - of the trap set - and the multiple timbres of each mallet solo. It's the music of the future, with organic variation and primordial polyrhythms. The videos are excellent. I especially love "mARImba". They are all great. The dancers are amazing and fit the music perfectly. Congratulations on the release of this incredible work of art.
It was a pleasure seeing you guys perform this at MATCH last night! Thanks for signing that drum head, by the way! -CC Connolly (the lefty with the rainbow skirt)
This was absolutely amazing 🤩 I cannot believe the amount of creativity that I just witnessed. I never would have thought these instruments could be played and sound like that. My favorite movements were Pillar VI and VII. I loved the way these movements sounded. Again just very creative. I thought the way the vibraphone was played in Amethyst was very interesting. I've never seen the vibraphone played in such a way before. mARImbA reminded me of the first piece of music I composed, "The Theory of Mystery- Jose Estrada" because it had a mysterious vibe throughout this solo movement. Absolutely amazing work. This piece really shows what great effort, time, and dedication can do. Very well done! 👏
It'd be interesting to know: Were all the sounds created acoustically, in real time? Or were some of them "produced", and/or generated electronically? I realize that many or most were the result of extended, unconventional playing techniques, or exact unisons of dissimilar instruments. But sounds like the deep, fast bass notes toward the end of "Pillar II", or the reversed echo and other effects in "Pillar III" at about 25:20 don't sound possible to do acoustically with the instruments the piece uses, or even like anything acoustic at all.
I was forturnate enough to watch them perform this live at PASIC 2021, and from my understanding some of the effects were generated Electronically. From my memory, everything you heard here was also heard when they performed it live at PASIC. I don't believe those effects were "produced" or, to clarify how I understand that term, "added/fixed in post."
Amazing music and the whole project - visuals, dance... Is there any info on recording this? Sounds so good, very clean and detailed sounds... mics and micing techniques used?
TWO GRAMMY NOMINATIONS!
Thank you for all your contributions to this piece Gary!!
