Hi there, cool tutorial I have an issue when applying shader... The fur doesnt take texture color and rendering as a one color shader. I did all steps as you show and when i am unhide fur at 31:58 the fur is just one flat color and on render too. How can i solve it Any thouts I would really appreciate
Dude I don't know much about arnold rendering as I typically work in games/realtime but this has been awesome, definitely gonna try learn more about rendering in general (and fur.) I really hope you do a full training series later on, thanks!
Nice stuff Arvid. Thanks for sharing this! And yeah, people hitting the dislike button... lol. What is it with youtube that attracts so many grumpy people? Are they just little kids who don't understand the concept of community, sharing and good will? Or are they genuinely trolls, living under a bridge :P
By far the most comprehensive guide to arnold ive found in this place. I use C4dtoA, and this guy has helped me improve my render game A LOT. I will always be grateful.
Hi there! Since this is a long tutorial I was wondering if you could answer a couple of questions. 1. Is this tutorial compatible with Maya 2016? 2. Are any of the shading techniques you apply incompatible with another render engine, say Redshift? Thanks!
Hi there! Yes this video is probably a bit dated - and most of the shading techniques are only applicable to Arnold. I have a new version of this on my channel though, which might be a bit better
Trying to render xgen fur in Maya 2020.4. Arnold will not render xgen at all. What is the trick? Searched in google nobody seems to have this problem? I tried in 2 different machines. Any ideas?
Hi, There. Amazing tutorial. Much more in-depth than others I have seen. Could you answer two questions for me. One, What is XGEN actually doing, creating a Material or creating a Shader or not creating anything. Two, how do you export your finished product to use outside of Maya. This is great if you can use it elsewhere. It's ok if you are using it to create marketing material where you only need a completed render, but totally useless if you need to use it for a game engine or other animation program like DAZ3D but can't . Thank you
Xgen is just generating the curves for the render engine. The renderer itself does all the heavy lifting. To use it in external packages, you would need to cache and bake out the sequence as curves..depending on what the package supports..maybe alembic
Arvid Schneider thank you for your answer, Arvid. I appreciate it. Now, being somewhat new to Xgen can you explain the purpose of it if you can’t use it outside of Maya.
@@josephbradley1781 The purpose of it is to create, groom and render hair on your characters in Maya. There are ways to export the hair as polys for game engine characters and whatnot. But Maya is intended to be a complete production solution and most animators use it as such.
when I try to render the hair, it shows up in the viewport but not in arnold. I just get the gray of the standard surface, while the hair isn't visible at all. this is 2019... do you know why this might happen?
Arvid Schneider yeah, please let me know your results! I tried redownloading different Arnold and maya 2019 versions and it refuses to work. Not sure if this is a universal issue or a me problem
unwrap object Apply lambert Xgen create description go to the preview/output scroll down to "custom output parameters" enter name - float to color - add Create map by right-clicking select brush then paint on the object then save button go to the hypershade find the file under textures - graph network load the image that you want again to preview or output window save button again Ta da

Hello Arvid, Is the alstandartHair shader working with Maya 2018 now? i have 2 Maya lights in the scene but i just get a black render... any ideas what the problem could be? Thank you!
Nice tutorial! I only have one question: what are the AOVs available for the Standard Hair Shader? It seems I can't get any passes other the the beauty pass. Thanks in advance!
Hello Arvid! I was wondering if you would consider doing a tutorial covering procedural shading in Arnold? Seems to be extremely useful when having multiple props in a scene. But there doesn't seem to be any tutorials really covering it. Just a suggestion! Keep up the awesome work.
Is there a way to scale the xgen along with the rig character? seems that the "xgGuides" are not able to follow the rig structrure whe you try to scale the character
Can you please explain how you did the shading part, what's connected to what? Maybe send a screenshot of the final hypershade? After you deleted some shaders to fix render issues and connected some others, I got lost. edit: nevermind, fixed by changing render attributes. Thanks for tutorial.
Hello Arvid, i have a basic but important question regarding xgen on animated characters: if the character is rigged and will be animated with bone deformations but also blendshapes - which workflow would you suggest to create the fur - create the xgen guides on the main mesh or rather duplicate the mesh and have the xgen guides created on the duplicate? Either way the mesh would always need to be bound to the deformed bones right? Thank you !
I'm new to this so I wonder why you chose this approach of creating hair with the interactive groom editor instead of the standard XGen panel. I also don't understand how those two editors connect at all. Very confusing interface.

Great Tutorial ;) Thank you! I had the same issues on creating the fur like you...I think there are still some bugs, but it is a really great tool. How would you transfer the fur to a character with animation? I don't want to make the groom in my rigging or animation scene. I only want to replace my alembic cache, but I doesn't work. Anyone with a solution for transfering the fur? ( The transfer function crashes everytime I use it)

So what bugs me about this tutorial is the viewport looked way better than anything you let render. Idk if it's because you just didn't let it fully render or what but I have 0 way of being sure your method works when you show us a pre-made product and not an actual finished process product. EDIT:
Thats because it's only found in the hypershade: not the node editor.
Could you make a video about getting the same texture on to Xgen fur made with the groomable splines ( insted of the interactive grooming splines ) ?

create description
go to the preview/output

enter name - float to color - add
Create map by right-clicking
select brush then paint on the object
