- The Mazda CX-9 has some updates for 2020. Under the hood is a 2.5L turbocharged inline-4 250HP & mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. It's exterior has nice flowing lines and not a lot of hard edges. On the inside you will find the updates including second row captains chairs, 9in infotainment screen, and new safety features. Is the 2020 Mazda CX-9 a good or great 3-row SUV?

Just bought one for my wife. Tested X5, CLE, Jaguar and the Macan......... guess what? This is the one she loved. I’m fine with it.
Just bought a 2020 CX-9 Touring with the premium package. I love it. Feels like I’m in something way more expensive
Did you run into any mechanical issues?
We can’t have a pano sunroof on the CX-9 because: 1. The curve of the roof, and the fact that the roof sheet metal gets more narrow as you move to the rear-ergo on a pano on this vehicle, the moveable section and the opening area would have to be smaller than it is now. 2. A pano roof would add 400 lbs minimum to a vehicle which already weighs 4600 lbs with all wheel drive. It would sway too much in curves-would be top heavy. That’s what the CX-9 engineer told me at the Detroit Auto Show.
I have a 16 model Signature that I use for Uber XL. It has been flawless. Most comfortable third row seats in the class, and even above the next couple of classes too.
Those are 2 truly terrible excuses. Many coupe SUVs with a roofline that slopes WAY more than the CX-9, such as the Audi Q8 and BMW X6 both have pano roofs. Mazda just cheaped out, sorry to tell you.
There is a fog lamp, it’s the little circle in the bottom trim where the chrome trim meets
This and the complete misrepresentation of the heads up display make me wonder how much effort he puts into getting to know the cars he is reviewing, or is he just churning out quantity over quality?
I think you have to take that zonk back because there is a fog light on the extreme lower corner of the front lip

According to the Mazda site, you are correct. I thought it might be the Signature trim only, but led fogs are listed on the Grand Touring model also. I like the fact that they are kind of inconspicuous.

I also thought you had to get the signature trim to get the captain's chairs? Didn't he say this was the GT?
You are misinformed about the heads up display. It displays the speed limit, blind spot monitor, cruise control, lane keep assist, and GPS turn directions.
I agree with you 1000000% on the wheel wells being body colored for it to be more elegant. I purchased this car right b4 the new yr vs the gc limited x I was considering. You gave me the incentive to go cx9 and can’t be happier thus far. It has its gripes, but man this suv drives like a sports car and sooo smooth.
Believe it or not there is AC in the third row. It’s under the 2nd row seats and you have to turn the feet air on.
I've had my 2011 CX9 AWD since it was new. I've never driven a finer car. You can probably take Joe's review of the new one to the bank.
@John Richards Please have your water pump replaced before it fails, fills your crankcase with coolant, and destroys your engine. Those Ford engines are notorious for that.

$42k for this vehicle is outstanding. You have some RAV4s that cost that much and the higher end RAV4s seats are fake leather. Are you sure about that price Joe? White is not my color but at that price I’d even purchase a white CX-9. Excellent video once again!! This vehicle is an excellent purchase.
louis ayala I’ve always liked their Soul Red.
I have the white on my cx5 and it’s really pretty. It’s not the typical white you see on a car. Mazda’s white is has this mica shift it, so when it’s in the sunlight it sparkles like snow.
Just got my 2020 cx9, absolutely love it. Rides smoothly, super convenient with kids. Only take away is the small trunk, probably could fit 4 bags of groceries without the 3rd row down.
I've heard these CX9s have an oil leaking problem. Not outward but it burns inward. Apparently Mazdas fix was just keep adding more oil.
LOL got to love that they put those cup holders on the engine for all the mechanics in the world.

WB Wayne. Winding road doesn't do a voice commentary, and I've been told the cx9 headlights turn with the steering so would like to see that.
These are the adaptive headlights on the CX5. The system is probably very similar to the one the CX9 is equipped with.

My brother is 6'6", and had one of these, as a rental, while visiting Michigan, while up from Florida, recently.
Quite impressive vehicle, and he seemed to fit comfortably in it.
Much better, rear quarter windows, compared to your recent Acura MDX.

You ran you finger right by the LED fog light that you said it didn't have.
There are fog lamps on the front of the CX-9 it’s at the corner of the chrome trim at the bottom of the front bumper.
This is actually the best crossover SUV out there. Mazda did outstanding job with this car.

I hate that every company is pushing captains chairs. No one really wants them. 👎 I think the touch screen only works when the car is in park if I'm not mistaken
Agreed. It is available with the bench and it doesn’t look and feel like a bench, which is the best part while allowing a 7th passenger. I just got my 2020 a few weeks ago and I’m very impressed so far.

Mazda is the only Japanese brand killing it with their exterior and interior designs to rival German brands. With a good price and reliability buying a Mazda is a no brainer

There are low profile LED fog lamps above the lower chrome trim- the interior trim is all aluminum- not plastic- the heads up display shows blind spot info, speed, speed limit on current road, navigation directions, lane departure warnings as well as the following distance indicator and adaptive cruise control- don’t zonk a car for lack of specs that are there when you didn’t know.

Starting Monday, I’m being transferred to A Mazda store in Chicago from a Kia store within my company. I love Kia, but I will have no issue selling Mazda since it’s a great brand!

CX9...bought a 2017 at the time when I cross shopped between the Mazda, Highlander and Pilot...I value driving dynamics and the CX9 won me over the others that felt bland/drove like minivans. Plus better fit & finish and had nicer interior and exterior design. Didn’t really care much for space as it wasn’t a necessity for me.
CX9 hands down for me. If I needed more room though, definitely the Tell U Ride.

I'm mainly going for the new generation Highlander mainly because of the updated interior/exterior. Especially with that 12.3 inch screen. Plus, it feels like a car I can love and keep without hesitation. My reasoning

Change tires to sticker like I did and even FWD applies torque so much better than these stock Falkens.... 3rd row is almost never used so no AC is ok for us.

André Sara mazda2 in thailand, mazda3 moved production to mexico, used to be japan. Im sure cx9 isnt from japan. I know its from america from what i recall.

It's a great vehicle, before we bought our pathfinder last yr, I tried my hardest to get the wife to look closely at the cx9.
She really wanted an infinity qx60 but realized that it's not worth the extra 20 grand over the pathfinder.
The Mazda and the pathfinder are cheaper than the rest but both are great for be price. We paid $40,000
for our pathfinder platinum. Sure it's missing android auto and car play, but as if said, for that price fully loaded it's hard to beat.

to me this is the best suv out there.right now.its a work of art.drives like a sports sedan.the bose sound is amazing better than alot of competitors out there.i don't agree with any of those zonks.whats so big about a frameless mirror.can break easier.
I have a 2017 metallic grey SUV i have the touring package with leather seats, Its a great car mazda has really stepped up their game in the terms of reliability and looks! Its a fun driver!!!! happy with my purchase make sure you have the Bose package or else your not going to be happy with the sound system
when we test drove the 2020 mazda cx9 it was white it had a sunroof

Warning to buyers. I just purchased mine a few months back with only 20k miles and there has been a bunch of concerns approaching already. We've had to replace 1 side mirror motor because it didn't fold out sometimes, we've also had to replace 1 rear strut due it failing prematurely. After getting the car back from the dealership, I'm already starting to hear wheel bearing issues coming from the passenger side. Im very confused to why the car is so new yet has so many issues already.
Next time buy new one and don't cry here

Joe, these Mazda's do not look back at all. I am getting RDX soon but this is not bad at all. I could see my self cruising in Mazda blasting Iron Maiden or Judas Priest lol.

I live in Arizona and can't..... I CAN NOT not have rear AC ...... Too bad I love the Mazda line.... I drove a Mazda 5.....and never gave me a problem.....talk about reliable vehicle....if it had rear AC I would have picked one up.....

Great review as always ... one thing nobody ever mentions is whether this driving position feels like your driving a Subaru Outback or more of a higher up feeling like a SUV like a montero or gx460. It looks more like a Subaru driving position / feel.

The first generation of CX-9 was great. The new one is just okay. It underperforms and lacks a lot of features that the original had.

I wish it was just a bit bigger. the wife's Ford edge is about the same size and it's a 2 row crossover.if I'm buying an SUV I want that third row and a decent cargo area.
I wonder how this compares to the Chevy traverse,at least there you still get an optional v6 probably just about the same fuel economy.

If Mazda was to add a panoramic or dual sunroofs on this and there other cars. They would have more customers.
TOP SUPPS no they would not. Panoramic sunroofs add weight. Mazda knows this and will not compromise the handling feel of their vehicles just because people expect all brands to have pano roofs, catering to know it alls.
I would not want a vehicle with a panoramic piece of glass above me. Extra maintenance, extra cost. Giant fishbowl, magnifying the heat in the summer. No thanks.

Kevin Wright well that’s a pretty silly compromise considering the competition All have the option for panoramic views or dual sunroof. Also This is not no 400hp sports machine and I’m sure no one is buying this for faster 0-60mph speeds. It’s a vehicle to pleasantly move family around in style. Kia Telluride/Palisade will kill this. I’m sure they will do there homework on the next restyle/generation.
