I use crossover cables when directly connecting to nodes/endpoint devices. Pretty much all switches and routers for the past 2 or 3 decades use auto mdix interface controllers so just use straight through cables on those.
I just spent the whole day yesterday trying to figure out this on my own and failed. I keep chasing my tail looking at the various parts of the process without knowing what all the parts were. I have confidence that what you suggested will work as I have seen several of the parts you mentioned and tried working my way through them without joy. In fact, this video gave me a new perspective about Windows 10 that most things are worked out and segmented into a logical structure. This is the first time I have had a higher level clue as to what that logical structure might be like. (For example, who would have ever known that there was a dialogue just for Unidentified Networks Properties?) Thanks very much. The difference is that I want to share a disk and not a folder, and if I understand correctly I can treat the disk much like you treated the folder. Crossing fingers. This looks like the TRUE PATH. Well no joy, I'm on Windows 10 Home which does not allow secpo.msc. However I found a way to fix that: www.itechtics.com/enable-gpedit-windows-10-home/ The SHORT batch file worked just fine on both computers and I have secpol.msc But not out of the woods yet. For some reason, My attempt to use the Ethernet adapters is not working yet. First problem I hit is that secpol.msc does its job, and the changes to Unidentified Networks Properties are remembered, but my Unidentified Network is still Public and no sharing is happening and the directly cabled computers don't see each other yet. Stay tuned.

Except that it's not explained correctly. He did not explain that the network cable NEEDS to be a crossover cable which has a different pinout than a standard network cable.
@@mar504 it is explained correctly. he is doing some subnetting here, not just data transfer. for data transfer only, you need a crossover cable, thats correct.
For normal users and tiny file transfer, you better off just use cloud drive or portable drives its much easier. The method described in this video is only useful for computer technicians to trasfer very large amount of data within a relative short time, or if you are setting up a local network.
Just open Network and internet settings and click on change connection properties and than select private network. Done. Works with every windows 10 version. Why so complicated? Thump down for the video.
u just need to connect the same wifi and use the same ip.. no need lan.. and if you connect to lan you just need to install Advanced IP Scanner or SoftPerfect Network Scanner then setting your share folder over lan or wifi.
Dear Sir, Heartily Thank you for your detailed video. is Cross LAN Cable required or normal LAN Cable required for connecting between 2 Windows 10 Laptops..? It would be great helpful if you answered early as possible. Thank you Sir. Basavaraj.
How can this work without a crossover cable? I don't see you mention this at all. Standard cables are through cables, you need to swap the TX & RX lines so you get the proper inputs to each computer.
Could I use this method to connect two PCs together just to use Parsec and use a second ethernet port on each PC to access my existing LAN and internet?
@@MrScottishGamer Yeah, Back in the day when I used to do this stuff, things were very different. It is great to find out that newer technology makes things much easier. I used to do file transfers from computer to computer over 15 years ago.

Been trying to figure cause. Works awesome when does work. I use cloud for some stuff but larger files I don't want to keep uploading downloading.
I tried this and it worked, but when I took lan cable out of router and plugged into laptop for downloading a file, the laptop showed 'No internet' inspite of internet being available. I had to reset the adapter to use wired connection from my router

This just gave me superpowers! (multi-proc Vray Rendering) I networked all the computers in my house together! lol
We used to call that crossover cable. Hmmm the memories...
is this considered a "straight through" cable? ...if so I have one labeled that way..
you don't need crossover cable any more
Pretty much all ethernet ports are now Auto-MDIX, crossover cables are obsolete.
Me too, old memories.

Finally! after 3 blog tut and 2 videos , I arrive to this ne who actually works!
Thaks!
This has been around since BEFORE XP!! It is way over 20 years old method!
For me, it's the way of the PC DOS era.
The difference is that at the time a crossover cable was mandatory.
Endeed :)
And before PCs commonly had Ethernet ports, it was Laplink via a serial cable at 1MB/minute.
I do have xp it has exyension port for file sharing :)
I'm dumb with computers, anyone know if I can just connect an old PC with XP Pro to a new one with Windows 10 in a similar fashion as this video?

Yes but the bandwith is limited to the router wifi speed. Using cat6 cable, you can do transfer rate of 125 megabyte/s

You can even use for sharing large files by the use of ipmsg app.. Is simple reliable..
I just share over bluetooth or usb with 6 laptops I have, this is too extra for a regular home user. This is more interprise style networking.
Actually you do not need to set an IP address. They will automaticly both get an 169.x.x.x IP address. You can use that IP address.
Apipa network .
People who don’t know how to network they are assigning IPs and we let PC to assign 169. Addresses while making a coffee. This tutorial way too long.
So when it comes to the assign IP address aspect we don’t have to mess with it at all?
Artie Hamlett well you can but why the hassle. You can let pc to a song 169 range.
Can I still connect my laptops to the internet via ethernet whilst they are connected together?
thanks a lot budy
