LAN Shared folder is only for some files moving, but if you need NAS, you are not gonna move 3-4 files per month... But maybe a gigabytes, or maybe terabytes of.

With the Server, you can reach the files from more then ony one device and you can reach it via Wifi and you can reach the files in the Server from yout laptop/PC or any other Media device, wich is connected to the sam network as your server

3.5” hdd on laptop. Put the hdd in an external hdd-case that had USB-connection or get a DAS storage if want to run several discs in a raid system. Best is not use a laptop as a NAS and instead use a tower pc for connect 3.5” harddrives. My self had tried OpenMediaVault on a NUC with two 3.5” disc over USB3 work most of the time but USB and special controllers in HDD-cases are not made for 24/7 use so needed some restarts sometimes when some disc froze in some big read or write task. Now I have a Q-NAP NAS to replace my ghetto NUC NAS who have SATA and real Raid capability.

Yeah you can share hdd old case with freenas software for ip internal / web access with display graphical. But you need to get file from web in method of windows default lan sharing folder. Freenas for web graphical.

Well you should not have problems as long as you plug the sata cable to the HDD and on the other side to the motherboard,

If you have any recent windows you can just share the hard drive. No need to do all steps.
