- Control board repair for a circa 2003 Maytag Neptune Dryer displaying 88; model number MDE5500AYW
Maytag Control Board Part Number: 33003028
If the same 3300uf 16V capacitor is failing on your board and can't find one locally I purchased mine at Digikey.com. Digi-Key Part Number is P122318CT-ND and Manufacturer Part Number is EU-FS1C332B. Link: www.digikey.co....
Cheers and good luck!
You’re video was both scary and inspirational! You did a perfect job walking us through this, maintaining optimism and steady guidance! Loved it…👍🏼
02:20 -- Seriously outstanding suggestion -Taking a quick photo is a tool of it's own! I heard of this perhaps a decade ago. One of those, "Why didn't I think of that!" type things. And w/ the proliferation of fairly powerful cameras in our phones, taking a quick pic & being able to review it easily, there's simply no excuse for not doing so as an insurance policy against effing up your workpiece.
Thanks and subbed - you earned it.
Wish mine had been a capacitor, but everything looked fine when I pulled the board. But I have to say, I really appreciate this how-to video. Especially the reminder to take a picture before unplugging everything! Thank you! I put a re-furbished board in, and it is working now.
Where did you find your refurbished control board?
Thank you for this video. My 3300uF capacitor wasn't bulging or leaking, but only measured 330uF. Replacing it fixed the 88 code. The resistors were also pretty charred but all measured 825 ohms.
That fixed my dryer issue! It was the same as your issue. I replaced that capacitor and it fixed it. I have the exact same dryer as you and my capacitor was 16v 3300 uF. I also replaced those resistors since mine were burnt and beat up too. Those were 820 ohm 2 watt resistors for me. For anyone interested those were my values but check your resistances and values to make sure! Thanks again for the video and the lesson!
I want to thank you for this very helpful video. I have the same model dryer and experienced the same problem. I removed the circuit board from the dryer. The capacitor you described (3300uf) your problem with appeared normal and no leakage. I removed it and the smaller capacitor (1000uf) next to it and tested them. The 1000uf capacitor tested at 950 and the 3300uf capacitor tested at 500. I replaced the 3300uf with a new capacitor and the dryer is working again. 😃
This totally got me out of a pickle this afternoon. I replaced the cap as you demonstrated on the video and another Maytag Neptune dryer lives to see another day! Thank you for posting this!!!
Great to hear! Hope your dryer gives you many more years of use!
Thank you for the video! Excellent. Replacing the capacitor in question solved the problem. Saved us $150 and two+ weeks without a dryer.
Your video and some other info garnered online about the "88" display issue helped me get my dryer running again for only $2.85 and a little time. Thank you. Great how to video.
I have the exact same model dryer. Mine starting glitching for about a year ago showing a PF (power failure) error code. After fiddling around the button it would eventually start but sometimes would cut off after about 5 minutes. After seeing this video I too noticed that the same capacitor had a small bulge at the end. I replaced it and now it's working. Purchased a soldering kit off of Amazon for about $16.99 and capacitors for $8.99. It was my first time soldering. Thank you for posting this video.
That's great! Hope you get many more years out of your dryer!
I have never in my life even thought of repairing an electric appliance. Thank you so much for this video. It worked!
That’s great to hear!!! Glad you were able fix your dryer! Hopefully you’ll get many more years out of it!
I’m an appliance repair tech, and I really enjoyed your video and subscribed.
Very well put together and informative 😊👍
Worked for me ! Thanks my board looked exactly like yours burn marks and all
GREAT VIDEO! I have the exact same model and the same capacitor was bulged on the top. Waiting for Digikey to deliver the new capacitor. Thank you!
Came here to fix mine too but after about ten minutes being plugged in it just started up
Tanks for posting
I had the same problem as in the video, and follow his footsteps exactly and the problem is solved. Thank you. My driers 88 code problem started with turning the breaker off/on at the main control panel. So, make sure when you turn off and on your breakers unplug the 220 voltage appliances.
This was just perfect! Q Win, you did such a great job of explaining the repair! My dryer is 20 years old and I thought I'd either have an expensive repair or have to get a new one. My son traded out the capacitor in no time and the dryer is running like new again. He said I get the credit for finding your video....but I'm going to give all the credit to you! Thank you so much!
Great to hear! Hope you get another 20 years of service out of your dryer!
Thank you for making this video.
I just used the link to order two capacitors.
Mine just shit the bed in the same manner about an hour ago. You will likely save me a hundred and thirty six bucks by having made this video and I would like to extend my sincerest thanks.

Found a slightly bigger capacitor installed it and that fixed it for me! Thanks again!
Great to hear! Glad this video was able to help you fix your dryer!
first! :-) you the man Q! i was only concerned when you're handling the 220 plug.. i'm scared to even touch the shield back side of those things... love it when you said "perfect" :-) nice fix!
What a great video thanks for posting
Good attempt but i wonder how long it lasted , because i would be paying more attention to those resistors that were overheating indicating that there was a high current going through them. There might be an underlaying issue with the board.
Outstanding video and presentation.
I replaced both capacitors and it works fine now. I had to buy 10 units each, so I have extra if anyone is interested in the set. 1000uf, 50V and 3300uf, 16V.
I will say my capacitors looked ok visually. I even checked them with my meter and they seemed to check out ok. I changed them anyway and it worked.
mine look fine also. how could I get one of each from you. I'm in Arkansas.
@@matthewschug939 interesting what was your dryer doing mine isn’t showing the 88 but the start button has no beep board doesn’t reset with the two button hold down.
I’m interested, if still available.
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately it did not work for me. Still got the 8.8 after changing the capacitor. BTW my resistors were charred like those in the video. Seems like a design problem there. Time for a new dryer I guess.
In my case, my resistors weren't just scorched, one had cracked. So it must be very common for those to get way too hot.
where can you get a capacitor
I’m seeing that you put this up 4 years ago. Any chance of you confirming that in total you have 11 wires total connected to the board. Five on the right and 6 on the left. I have the same model that someone has worked on and the board is the same but they wired it differently. I’m short a black wire on the left side. I have the 5 on the right but the left side is entirely different with only 5 wires in total. I don’t have the wiring diagram with this unit. I’m wondering if I get another board how it will work being yours is the same model but it has an additional wire than mine does. I would appreciate any help.
Thanks
Don
Would replacing the capacitor fix the problem even if it doesn't appear damaged in any way or could it be the burned resistors
Thanks a million! This was the perfect fix. I am equally concerned about the scorched resistors. I’d like to replace them but the colored bands on The resistors are scorched away so I cannot read what they are. Any ideas on this?
Did you ever replace these?
I have my tv repair man fixing this, but of course he is recommending that we change the burned looking resistors too. Does anyone know the values? Can’t find them on the web
How to check for powerfail
Hi Q, thanks for the video. How do I unplug the connectors? I was only able to remove the 5 pin connector but others are stuck. Don’t want to use brutal force.
Hi! The connectors do require a bit of force to pull them off the pins. Pull the plastic connector with steady force with one hand while holding the portion encompassing the pins with the other and they should come off. Don't pull the wire as it may come out of the connector. Good luck!
This is a good video. Do you have a link to where I can buy the capacitor??

Thank you for your reply!
My model number is slightly different from the one in this video. Mine is MDG5500AWW. Do you know if that will be an issue?
@@rickabr123 Just saw this comment. Great to hear the fix applied to this model as well!
Hi there, I realize this is an old vid but found it in search of having the same 88 issue. I just purchased an entire refurbished control board as I don't own a soldering gun..
my silly question (as a girl..lol) is how do I remove the other 2 screws, you said socket wrench yet I do not have one of those either but an willing to purchase..
however those screws seem very tiny.. any advice on what type of device to purchase please.?
Thank you
Not silly, you can also use some pliers to get them off. The socket wrench is easier to use but the screws are not difficult to remove. Good luck!
@@qwin1614 I did it! I went to Home Depot bought a socket wrench set for $30 and replaced the entire control board, I purchased, refurbished on ebay for $75!! Works like brand new!
Thank you SO MUCH for this video.. huge help!
My Maytag Neptune has a problem of sometimes coming on sometimes it won't. Sometimes pressing the touchpad works and sometimes it doesn't. It's very intermittent. Was curious if you found any good sites for troubleshooting the control panel or circuit board. I haven't found any yet.
If you remove the silver panel on the back (shown in the video) there is an instruction sheet taped to it with information on how to diagnose the dryer but if your control board is damaged then the diagnosis process will not help.
My Maytag dryer model is Neptune MD5500. What will be the Capacitor number to order. Thank you
Hi! Check the video description for information on the capacitor. Good luck!
Hi, great video. The 8.8 issue just occurred for me, after a lightning storm! I tried to order the capacitor from Digi-Key, but it seems to be out of stock. Any other suppliers anyone knows about? Thanks!
Hi! I believe any 3300uF 16V capacitor with similar lead spacing and dimensions should work. Though if your dryer died during an electrical storm the entire board could be fried if it experienced a power surge. In that situation replacing the capacitor may not be the right solution if other circuits are damaged. If you wish you try the following link has a list of caps with similar specs as the out of stock Panasonic capacitor. Good luck!

I just got mine in a pack of 10 off Amazon for like 12 dollars! Any 16v 3300 uF capacitor will work!
@@RadioactvPanda was your dryer showing the 88 mine is not but the start button has no beep and the suggested two button hold down isn’t resetting the board, have not taken anything apart yet to look over the board plan to in morning
same i see 8.8 then flashes 48minutes and then dies. ill try the capacitors 1st and check 24v and 5v rails. might be cooked.
The diaphram "start switch on mine is going bad. Any Ideas on how to repair or find a new/used one?
Uncertain how to fix this, but you can try looking for the part number using the Maytag Part Finder website below and then doing a search on google using the part number to see if a refurbished one is available. You might need to find an entire front button panel as that button is probably not available by itself. Good luck!

MY capacitors appear to be okay. The board looks "clean/norma;" Any suggestions on where I can start trouble shoot? (My problem Neptune dryer control panel lights up, but the left most buttons don't work, no star/pff buttons/)
Your
Issues sound like mine but I’ve yet to take anything apart but the board is acting the same as described did you find any luck in fixing the problem thanks
You can use a multi-meter to test the capacitor. Capacitors usually act as an open circuit and so if testing with a multimeter shows open, its probably good. A capacitor showing short across with a multimeter is definite gone.
I just put in a new control board and now it's showing 16 instead of 88. >.
Sorry to hear. It's possible the new board has an issue and you may need to return it. The error code page taped to silver panel may have information about this error code as it may not be related to the board. There could be an issue somewhere else in the machine. Good luck!
Hey, Q! Did you replace both of the capacitor with exactly the same specifications as written on it? i.e. there are 2nof them, one is 3000 and the other one is 1000 (i think). We ordered just one size.
Harper Grace Hi! I only replaced one capacitor as only one was damaged on my board so I cannot comment on the other capacitors on the board but its recommended to replace with an equal voltage and cap size capacitor. Good luck!
Thanks for taking the time to make this. Do you have a link to that specific capacitor?
