  • Taro farming here on Niue is a lifestyle for most families. It is our staple food. Children help by working alongside their parents and learning at the same time. This is how the torch of knowledge is being passed on from generation to generation.
This is how children or young people are introduced and inducted into the learning and values of hard work, patience, teamwork, delayed gratification and also skills of working without supervision, after they have been taught under supervision of course.
These taro farming experiences will in no doubt help mould them into hard working and responsible individuals with fortitude. Skills gained and mental strength that can transform or translate well into other areas of their future lives.
There are lots of taro varieties and each has their own unique characteristics such as taste, texture, longevity in the ground, growth factors, external environmental factors and so forth. There is so much to learn, understand and appreciate about taro farming.
It is an ongoing process which never ends unless you give it up altogether or leave the Island!

Great memories and teaching moments with the children. They're very helpful and very good at doing the chores and farm work. I grew up in the island doing the same helping out with fishing, farming and selling vegetables and all. We love and appreciate your family for sharing your family videos. It reminds me of our lives back in Samoa. Take care and God bless!!

Love the family and the videos, Jay. I try to like and comment on all your videos, because I do love the cultural lessons. I hope to do as much as i can to help you build your channel. If, it was just you I would still watch. The wife makes it better and the kids make it great. The rest of the family and the community makes your channel outstanding. I have watched a lot of videos while recovering from cervical surgery and your channel is a must watch for me. Wholesome entertainment. Again, thank you for your time and effort.
