For the viewers who don't speak dutch I'd like to clarify one thing in the video. In dutch, as in many languages, there is a difference between "you"s. In Dutch "jij" is the informal you used for friends, coworkers and basically people of your age and younger even if you don't know them. "U" is used as the more respectful or honorific variation of "you". Traditionally used for pastors, doctors, teachers, police and other people in respected jobs. It's also used for grandparents, parents and other people older than you, especially if you don't know them.
So, the reason he's hammering on the you (jij) is because he's a customer in a store and like a guest in a restaurant he shouldn't be addressed as jij but as u.
This show from Youp is around 30 years old now and back then he wasn't the only one annoyed at jij starting to replacing u.
I'm hoping this makes sense and clarifies things. love the video and your response to it and I will be watching more of your video's. Thank u sir.
Basicly true, except 1 thing: "U" is by SOME people used for parents and grandparents! Most people use the more informal "jij". In my opinion to use "U" for (grand)parents is not OK but thats a matter of opinion.
It's also a great way to unsubtly call someone stuck-up.

As a swede i can say that IKEA is our revenge for the empire we lost in 1721. We couldn't dominate the battlefields anymore so we decided to low-key terrorize people with our weird screws and hex-keys instead, MUAHAHAHA!

So if you buy a bed or whatever at Ikea in Sweden You dont face this problem? Me as a women had this horrible, frustrating Ikea -experience myself, and ofcourse I thought because im well not a dude most be the reason that I didnt know how to put that bed together..the next day my father came to help, but it was also a horrible frustrating Ikea - experience for him as well, but he managed to put it together.,

We do have a few items from IKEA, but in a similar price range you can find much nicer stuff elsewhere if you know where to look.
But the real nice stuff of course is a bit more expensive.

Thanks to this sketch by YOUp, I have developed a step-by-step plan for dealing with IKEA furniture. 1. Go through the manual and check if YOU completely understand it. (If not, consult YOUTube) Discuss the manual with the person who is helping YOU. 2. Check if YOU have all the screws (look carefully to see if they exactly match the picture). 3. Check if YOU have all the planks (pay close attention to the holes). 4. Lay everything out in the correct order. 5. Only now do YOU start. Another tip: when I met my husband I dragged him to IKEA as a test. When he passed I bought a closet which we assembled together. When he also passed that test it was time for the final test: visiting IKEA with his mother in law. We are happily married 😊

To understand why Youp is annoyed by the way the IKEA leaflets and personel talk to him, you need to know that the Dutch language has two kinds of "you": When you adress a friend, an equal or a kid, you say "jij" (informal). When you adress a superior, an elder or someone you have a professional relationship with, you say "u" (formal). Traditionally, shop personel adress customers with "u", but the IKEA people use "jij". This to create an informal, let's be buddies, atmosphere. However, it pisses off many of the older Dutch people.

In the translation, it's accurately represented in that sense that whenever the informal 'you' is used and Youp emphasises it (to show his annoyance) it's has been italicized (' _You_ ').
Also, this was around 30 years ago when this change was still in full swing. (so he could be understandably annoyed about it, while it's no real issue today).
I really love to hear opinion of foreigners about this typical Dutch standup comedy. I wonder how much the subtitles can cover the humor..

I am Dutch. 30 years ago I flew to LA for the first time. What was the first thing I saw? The big Ikea store next to the airport!

This entire show is so brilliant. Youp has an awesome way of telling stories in such a way you actually believe him. This actual show, Spelen met je Leven (Playing With Your Life) is about a man that became out of touch with his family, his wife, and starts a bar in the attic of his house. How he tells about that family, it's all so hilarious, emotional and relatable. Especially the part about his grandma that wants to leave the world but can't (in which he helps her), it's heartbreaking. One of the top comedians in Holland.
I tried finding segments of Dutch comedian Herman Finkers for you but couldn't find one with English subs, which is a shame but maybe too hard to translate. My personal favourite. His first couple of shows are so unbelievably good. His way with words and especially his timing is impeccable. Time you learn Dutch ;)
I think Herman Finkers' kind of humor he is best known for is 'lingual/word humor'. In particular this type of comedy is difficult or impossible to translate into something that is an equivalent of it. Idiomic issues make most of his word humor impossible to translate literally. Foreign language speakers will understand the jokes the best way if they actually learn to speak, write and understand the Dutch language itself.
However, there are some sketches which don't demand as much from the translation in terms of idiomic issues.
One sketch I really think is brilliant is when he is playing an operator trainee in the psychological healthcare branch to answer calls from people with mental problems, from within the organization formerly known as RIAGG. It's one of few of his sketches that, without becoming arrogant or too blunt, comes close to the limit of political correctness.
Also, he has done some neat sketches with visual humor as well, like for example the one with 'Australian beer'.
@@williamwilting Absolutely right! The scene with the home made box with the arm in it still brings me to tears of laughter. That would work in all languages, but to grasp every element of the jokes and especially the timing (of which i think he is the absolute master, the best of all in the Netherlands) you'll have to be a native speaker.
I've seen fantastic jokes being destroyed by lack of timing of other comedians, and Finkers' does the opposite: he makes even the lamest pun fantastic by juuuuuuuust waiting for a few milliseconds before delivering the punchline, of singing the next sentence of a song just a tad too early. Pure brilliance.
Its his wife's grandmother. (thats also explained somewhere in the beginning about what followed him into the home after they maried "that day"

There are even worse shops. At Lidl and some online shop I bought furniture with the ENTIRE manual printed in a single picture on a very tiny piece of paper, in very low resolution.
Even with a magnifier you could barely see which part was which, and where to put the screws exactly.

An advice when going to IKEA; If you need something from their store (if you have the system in US to pick up yourself) always check the internet so you know exactly what shelf it located on, and go directly there without deviate from the path….
If, unfortunately, you need something that is not in the warehouse, and have to go in the store itself, make sure follow the arrows, and when you find what you need go directly to the checkout. A map will help (and a compass).
Valium could also make the IKEA-shopping easier but is not recommended for long-term use.
AND IMPORANT; Always study the maps and have an escape way ready…….
Living in Sweden with two IKEA stores nearby……….
And since you're there to get the item, pay for it and get the hell out, best to enter the store at the end of the day, half an hour or 20 minutes before closing time. At that stage, everyone wants to go home soon so they won't be able to 'detain' you for that long.
At the time mr Van 't Hek went to Ikea Internet had to be "invented"...
my best experience with Ikea montage is: DON"T THINK, just follow he pictures like a dumb sheep.

Bunk beds made me think of this - there's a Home Free video called "Natemares". In it Tim Foust (who's a great story teller by the way) tells a story about something that happened on their tour bus - it's funny as hell. I don't know if you've watched any of the "Story Time with Tim" videos but I know you'd get a laugh out of them.

And remember: he had to assemble TWO bunk beds, since his toddler boy also wanted one! So I guess there will be plenty material left for that coffin by the time that he finally is finished!
A correct Ikea montage doesn't have left overs, probably to prevent people getting idea's.

Past weekend I setup an IKEA storage. I had one of those screws left. After counting twice, I concluded they supplied one screw too much 🤣

Buckler came later?? I suggest you go google some stuff. Buckler released in 88, and he ridiculed it in a "oudejaars"show in 89. And flappy is more then 10 year before that..

we can all reate to this. I love his choice off swear words. Some are really original. Like the Spinache Bitch. (spinazietrut) Im proud to say that the Dutch can swear and also on television without that stupid beeep. Why? we all do it and is a great way to get your frustations out.
Reminds me of an interview on the radio; some DJ was talking with an American celebrity, and at some point she was talking about her butt, but she didn't know if that word was allowed on national radio.
The DJ (I forgot who it was) replied: "Why? For the listeners? FUCK those motherfuckers! You can say anything you want!" :D

I know what you mean about IKEA. I had a massive burnout a couple of years ago and I used IKEA to challenge myself.
First time in IKEA caught me off guard.....too chaotic....too much stimuli....I didn't know how fast I could get outta there....I had a massive panic attack. But throughout my recovery I went to IKEA on purpose to push myself....to be able to handle stimuli, chaos and test my self-control. Now that I am 95% recovered I go to IKEA like...."ok the arrow says the path is to the right and I just walked right into a couch in the middle of what used to be the path cause there clearly is no path here.....f-ing zen 🤌😮💨🤌...funny the in house designer of IKEA is a massive troll but ok...fine...not at all chaotic"....."heavy construction noises while the store is open....completely normal....very professional"....."I almost ran into a screaming toddler cause no one is watching it.....I could have sworn there is a ballpit here but nope this is much smarter"....."I can't find what I'm looking for cause everything is in f-ing Swedish....well that makes sense...totally normal....not at all frustrating or anything". To me IKEA is a big joke...its funny in a black humor sorta way.
I also have had a burn-out, and indeed a visit there also was a nightmare for me.
Now, years later, I still feel pretty uneasy to go there but I can manage myself.
