- Adventure motorcycle camping along the ORBDR. As a senior rider I am savoring my ability to get out and enjoy riding and camping and express my thoughts about this treasure. A beautiful and challenging ride from camp, views of snow covered Mt Hood, a lost tent and a mechanical issue.

Your videos inspired me. Your wisdom speaks loudly to me. I'll be 66 this month. The past dozen years have been rough. This year I sought out and aquired a sadly neglected 33 year old dual sport bike. I repaired it and embraced trail riding again after a long absence. I'm livin the dream! Thanks JR...

At 69, I've completed the eastern half of the TAT and the MABDR as well as many other Smokey Mountain trails. You are an inspiration! We lived in Battleground, WA in the 80's and I miss that country very much. Now residing in NC. Thank you for your content and the wisdom! Blessings your way!

I believe you have found your You tube niche my friend, The aging population that are new to riding or still like to ride, need to hear, tips, and tricks to keep going and fulfill that adventure of life pursuit.. Don't rush and smell the roses where your at. True words.

Your words inspire me in this video. I’m 56 and still riding and flying. I noticed my check engine light is coming on more and more as I get closer to 60. I usually eat healthy and go to the Gym 3 to 4 days a week lifting weights with my trainer followed by 30 min of cardio. I’d be dead by now if I hadn’t started doing this. I just bought my first HD and I love it. My Best friend from High School just bought a Pan America. I’ll never do the kind of riding you do because it’s just too stressful for me at my age but I do see myself buying a Pan America and riding off road and camping outdoors. I love your videos! Thank you for posting them.
Ride YOUR ride is a oft quoted ADV moto saying and it fits. My rides in the future are going to be different than in the past and all that is OK
BTW, retired airline pilot with A&P and lots of corporate and 135 flying which I no longer do. Sub'd to you.
Oh wow! I got my A&P too but rarely use it. I’m not good enough to get hired on with the airlines. 12,000 hours no accidents incidents or violation, never been arrested no DUI’s and well over 6,500 hours flying the Mitsubishi MU2. I currently manage and fly a Citation Bravo. Got turned down by SWA about 4 months ago. Oh well that’s the way the Mop Flops! You turn out some amazing videos! I’ve been sharing them with my friends. Keep safe out there!

Hear hear! We are blessed to be the age we are…a lot of my motorcycle mates didn’t make it this far. I’m 66 and been riding non-stop since 1975. I’ll ride my motorcycles until my ticket gets pulled by the Almighty, enjoy the journey, and stop to smell the roses. Ride safe! 🏍️🍺🎸🇿🇦👍

A hard ride but worth it for that view , lost my tent the same way , I now feed the draw string through the tie down strap . Cheers for a great video
Experience is a hard teacher sometimes. I was fortunate to have stopped for a break so soon after loosing it and discovering a empty rack was a shocking feeling.
Outstanding content, sir. What amazing beauty to immerse yourself in. I think it was the Buddha that teaches to let go of our past, let go of the future, and live in the eternal now. I find that the focus of riding a motorcycle, combined with the essential nature of the wilderness make doing that easier than any prolonged ascetic mystical practice.

Exactly how I want to ride, all my friends just want to speed through the whole way and never want to enjoy a view, it's always about distance and speed. I guess I have to go by myself. Last ride we went on we went 200 miles and stopped to take a picture then never stopped 'til 4 in the afternoon and they wonder why I don't want to go.
Miles of smiles. Otherwise, what’s the point? I’ve been in that situation and I prefer solo mostly.

I’m on an Aprilia Tuareg down in New Zealand and enjoy moto camping too (I’m 54 and if I’m half as adventurous as you at 72 I’ll be happy). I think I prefer solo riding to group rides. I hope the trusty DR gets you back on the trail 😀👍

I am enjoying your videos. I also am 72. I think you are missing just one thing, but that is my personal opinion; a trained dog. My trained Australian Shepherd is a joy to travel with and to take care of. I ride a 2018 Honda GoldWing Touring DCT. She rides along in the TSC sidecar. To me, a trained dog is essential, and they don’t come out of a box on Christmas morning that way. It takes time, but it’s bonding time. We are leaving on a 4,000 mile road trip next month at a leisurely pace. I wouldn’t want to go without my dog. She wears military canine hearing protection, goggles, and we are awaiting her Flying Ace neck scarf from Lithuania. I tether her fore and aft. My helmet is a vintage Vietnam helicopter pilot helmet. I had it refurbished and updated by the pros who do the USAF & USCG helmets. Coolest helmet on the road and the only one like it. It was my flight helmet. I have never seen another one like it except on a pilot. I was going to buy a Honda VTX 1800 until it occurred to me that I couldn’t take my dog on it. I just couldn’t pull that trigger. Yes, she’s that much fun. At stoplights we get unending “thumbs-ups” and pictures taken out car windows. She’s truly a celebrity!

I’m 72 I enjoy the bike like you I see where your coming from I wear all the safety gear my biggest concern is busting my hip so I just plod along like you I enjoy it I pick my roads and tell people where I will be some times my mate comes with me he’s a little younger I live in west Australia

I can smell those evergreens through the screen man! You are so right, take the time to really take in the spot you're at. We just got back from a trip of a lifetime to Idaho. 1300 miles of dirt. Each break and camp we made, I kept thinking man, we really gotta get back on the trail. About halfway through the trip, we started taking a few side tracks off the route, cooking more, taking more in, and the urge was still there, but man looking back we saw more of the awesome back country this way. There were a few places where we just didn't have the time and it's a perfect reason to go back. We took the tour of Idaho T3 dual sport route south to north and the BDR back south with a ton of our own side routes. What a place man. I had not idea the pacific northwest was as fantastic as it is. It's so great that you are able to do what you do man. I've taken some bad falls and bangs and it's really made me be thankful for my time on earth. Really love these and how you do the filming man. Can't wait for the next one!! I saw some of the spot's I had seen you ride out that way and it really brought it to life. Safe travels my friend!!
A young 63yo DR650 from Australia here and enjoying your trip and outlook.
I just got back from one myself and already planning the next in a months time. My goal is to still be "adventure" riding at 90 ( probably on a 250/300 ) and anything after that is a bonus.

You're the real deal Mr. JR. Love the way you make your videos. Although it must be very challenging to go on these motorcycle adventure trips through the mountains by yourself, you have a way to present your episodes in a very relaxed and simple way. I started motorcycle adventure trips this spring when I sold my Indian Scout and bought a Honda CRF 300L Rally. Never felt so alive and happy on a bike. Last summer, I did the MABDR alone with all my camping gear and had a great time. Next summer I plan to do the COBDR. I'll be 57 then. You are a true inspiration to keep on going and enjoy life with all the beauty it has to offer. Thank you so much! Greetings from Montréal, CA. 👍

Important message JR that we all need to be reminded of, inspiring video in many ways. I have several parts in route for my DR and tomorrow dragging the DR650 out of the corner of the garage to get it ready for my next adventure. Wonderful machines, that don't protest too much, a mechanical steed waiting for the master's call.
My DR650 needs a thorough going through now after 25,000 miles. Nothing major is wrong. Original bearings all around. Just wear from many rough trails. It had an ignition problem I’ve solved and will cover sometime. Not your usual suspects.

I want to be this guy when I'm his age I'm not far away but as soon as I retire I'm going to live on a mountain top somewhere and ride motorcycles the rest of my life. If I'm a dead my tent I'll be living a good life

Hey I saw you in a video on the Blue Ridge mtns. When I lived in Kentucky I did the ride from Northern VA to Gatlinburg on a four day trip. Loved it. Really liked the scenery on that stretch in AV. Stopped overnight in Asheville for a beer and nice dinner at a Greek restaurant. Fantastic food. Just wanted to share

Thanks. I had a Motoz Rallz front and Shinko 244 rear. I had a new rear Rallz but wanted to get the last wear from the Shinko. I’ve used Kenda and Shinko 244 a lot. Later in the season I have all Motoz and they are great but more money!

Some in 20's. Picked back up in 2018 (68) and rode the TAT 2019.

Just a carbiner through existing loops on the garmin and pack strap.
Hello- how do you prepare for a bear or mountain lion encounter when you are camping by yourself in the forest.
I take the standard precautions. I haven’t camped or traveled in Grizzly Bear country per say. Primarily keep camp free of food items and clean. Black bears don’t concern me from a safety standpoint and mountain lions less so. Basically, I’m aware of surroundings and where potential predators are warned of and act accordingly without fear.
