  • Today we take a look at BMW, cooling systems and discuss why they always fail. Or actually why people always think they fail, and the main causes that you can fix.

It seems like you didn't mention how the cooling system runs at 100-105 °C (220 °F) to increase thermal efficiency. Even though Toyota and Honda cooling systems still run at 78-82 °C (180 °F) even on eco cars like the Prius that are all about efficiency. 🤨That choice by BMW is really not necessary IMO, it's engineering ideals overruling common sense and it can't help to make anything to last longer -- especially plastics and rubber in the cooling system.
It sounds a bit like you are making excuses for BMW (given the cars have electric pumps with plastic impellers and then oil seals that aren't rated correctly that leak etc), when BMW could have just learnt from Honda cooling system design -- lower temperatures, metal impellers in metal mechanical water pumps etc (and choice of properly rated rubber seals that last longer before they leak)...
100,000 miles is not pretty good IMO. If you wouldn't be looking to replace anything on the cooling system on a Acura RL/Honda Legend or Lexus GS300/Toyota Crown at 100,000 miles, *why* should you be looking to replace things on a BMW 530i cooling system at 100,000 miles? 🤔

Good point on the hoses. Catching those oil leaks early on is the key.

I know who you were referring to, but I think the flange looks more like Kermit.
